| A great kung fu movie has sadly been horribly butchered on what is, without doubt, the worst DVD I have ever seen.
Gordon Liu plays the son of a murdered kung fu master who learns drunken style kung fu and then seeks revenge. There isn't really much else to the plot but its worth watching for the great fight scenes (although not on this disk).
Despite it's title this has very little to do with the Shaw Brothers classic '36 Chambers of Shaolin' except that it stars Gordon Liu. As a film in its own right its an enjoyable 85 minutes (although not on this disk) with some great kung fu sequences. The only drawback, other than the lack of plot, is that the film suffers from low production values and, if you're watching the English language version, the dubbing is absolutely terrible.
As enjoyable as the film might be this version is definitely to be avoided. The worst problem is the way in which the fight scenes have been clumsily hacked to pieces. This is really obvious in chapter 8 where a weapon sequence, featuring a chain whip, has been removed. This would be bad enough in itself but the scene has been edited so unprofessionally that the picture rolls off the screen at the point of the cut as if somebody has tried to splice the video master!!! Given that this film has been released completely uncut in the UK by Eastern Heroes there really is no excuse for this. Moonstone obviously couldn't be bothered to find a new master. At this point I lost interest in watching the rest of the film and just flicked through to the final showdown where more cuts have been made. With a running time of just 76 minutes a total of 9 minutes have been removed. Nowhere on the packaging is this mentioned, the running time is listed as 90 minutes - a blatant lie.
The disk is also plagued with other problems such as being full screen only and copied from a bad video master with loads of scratches. The soundtrack is English (at least Dolby Digital 2.0) only and there are no special features. Even with a low price of £9.99 there really is no justification I can think of for buying this. That said, I'll sell mine for a fiver to anyone who wants it - failing that I'll probably use it as a coaster.
Avoid, avoid, avoid !!!!
Rating: 3 out of 5 for the film, 0 out of 5 for the disk. |
