Jess Franco's first take on the Eyes Without a Face storyline is one of his best movies. This film was made when Franco still was trying. The black and white photography captures a creepy ambiance and the direction is far better than one would expect.

Not the Least Bit Awful.

I really did not know what to expect going into this film. I am familiar with the reputation of Jess Franco, and the box suggested that I was in for some right down sleazy entertainment. I was pleasantly surprised that this was a pretty well-crafted horror thriller in the Euro-gothic tradition of a Bava or that ilk. The story centers on a demented doctor that needs the skin of beautiful women to graft on to his horribly burned daughter's face. Dr. Orloff and his assistant Morpho wine and dine beautiful women and then take them back to their place to let em see some real "skin." There are some wonderful touches of humour mixed with the action, and the acting(despite being dubbed on my copy) was pretty good. Howard Vernon was wonderful as the obsessed doctor and Richard Valle did a good job as the murdering fiend Morpho, blind yet quick on his feet. The ladies are all lookers and the police inspector and his investigation are entertaining. This is a well-done thriller, lots of atmospheric shots with cats, owls, castles, and foggy nights. An unexpected pleasure!
