 | | | | | Tai Seng's 2-DVD set is a pretty solid product. The picture is about as good as you can get for something shot on video, while the remixed soundtrack provides some nice punch for the fight scenes. Extra-wise, there is a selection of trailers for other Tai Seng products, a short "making of" featurette, and two commentaries. The one featuring Ric Meyers, Bobby Samuels, and Frank Djeng is passable, but the one of real interest to fans is the one with Donnie Yen and Bey Logan. Yen and Logan are good friends, and it shows on the commentary, which is fast, fun, and informative. |

TECH NOTES:
200 min. The film is presented in its original aspect ratio, meant for television and was filmed on BetaCam which technically offers advantages and disadvantages over 35mm film. The image is somewhat flat with washed colors and occasionally over-saturated light, but otherwise looks sharp. The Cantonese audio track is in Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS sound. The removable English subtitles are easy to read and professionally done. Tai Seng has outdone themselves on the extras which include a Making of featurette, profile of Donnie Yen, and trailers for The Kung Fu Master, Fist of Fury, The Assassin, The Duel, Dragon Inn, and Deadful Melody. There are also two seperate audio commentaries. The first is by the star Donnie Yen and film expert and producer Bey Logan which features insights into the actual production and on the actors and crew, but not enough remembrances from Donnie who hadn't seen the series in at least seven years. The other commentary is by film expert Ric Meyers, HK star Bobby Samuels and Tai Seng marketing guru Frank Jang. They offer info on Donnie Yen, the history of Hung Hei Kwun, the founding of Hung Gar kung fu, and some but also plenty of off-topic conversation. |
