PRODUCTION NOTES:

Is Marriage Really All That Crazy?
"Marriage is a Crazy Thing" brings us and reveals a very unique and disquieting relationships. Who said marriage was both a happy misunderstanding, and miserable appreciation?

Psychologists say that excitement of loving someone will only last up to four years. However, the whole idea of monogamy have shaped us into thinking that we should only love one person and actually stay with that person for the rest of our lives. Strictly speaking, monogamy began to be widely up-held when average human life span was only about thirty years. But when things are looking up with an average life span reaching close to 80, it makes no sense to be forced into having sex with a single partner.

21st Century Love Story!
A typical melodrama usually involves a violation and revolt against the system and tradition where love is always pursued against the harsh circumstances that the society throws upon the lovers. While most melodramas focus on either the trendy and somewhat sensitive plots, or the exaggerated twist of a tragedy, deals with the concept of marriage through a couple’s up-and-down dating relationship. This feature is unique in that it defines the societal flaws instead of hiding away from them.

What’s more interesting is that does not present the subject in a rigidly logical sense, but uses YOO Ha’s sentimental yet realistic approach to hacking the relationship. Therefore, the title ‘Marriage is a Crazy Thing’ is not a conclusive remark yet a suggestion to the viewers for them to ponder.

Just as the main characters from said “Happiness can be achieved without marriage”, perhaps it’s time for us to move on from the conservative concept of marriage and pursue a more diversified forms of marriage where different people can find their own way of married life that suits their characteristics.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR: YOON HA

When Director YOO Ha and "Marriage is a Crazy Thing" met.
Director YOO Ha takes the credit for turning LEE Man-kyo’s "Marriage is a Crazy Thing" into a screenplay. YOO Ha was actually one of the judges for the 24th Today’s Novelist Award held in 2000. Director YOO picked up the book and read and found immense opportunity in the work. He liked the fact that the story revealed women’s side of the story which has been under cover for a long time. It was evident that the audience would pick up on the problem with traditional marriage concept conveyed in the story. Director YOO immediately contacted CHA Sung-jae at Sidus, and Sidus purchased the rights to the story where YOO’s arrangement followed.

Director’s Note
People nowadays believe that there’s a perfect soul mate out there for everyone and that they can all create a perfect home. Yet reality begs to differ. Marriage is about wealth, education, background, and other superficial values that shape us as a person. Accordingly for women, her husband is not the perfect man she dreamed of, but a necessity wrapped in a nice little package we call marriage. (Regardless, marriage continues to be seen as the most sacred, love filled ceremony.) In addition, the idea of monogamy is also a mere front to a man’s undercover polygamous life quietly accepted by the Korean society. This work was written to reveal such truths that are hidden behind the decorated fronts and questions ourselves of the validity of the current system.
