"2009 Lost Memories" appears at first to be nothing more than a genre blockbuster, but reveals something far greater.

Most of the acting is great, especially the lead, Jang Dong-Kun. The direction is very good, but the fact that this was director Lee Si-Myung’s first film is absolutely stunning. The action scenes may not be anything new, but they’re very well done. There’s lots of Michael Bay style action shootouts, with the occasional John Woo-ism.

The plot is quite interesting in depicting a future in which Japan and the US ally during World War II and atomic bombs are dropped on Berlin instead of Hiroshima & Nagasaki. Japan rises to become a super power, and maintains control of parts of Korea. Aside from the interesting concept, there's also some really good character drama within all the sci-fi action.

I think "2009" becomes an even better film if you are not Japanese or Korean. The most interesting part about watching it for me, as an American, is that I was torn between two countries that I have no affiliation with. As a result, it is hard to decide whose pain is worse and whom you should root for, making both sides equally as human.

This is a "What If" movie, or a "Choose Your Own Adventure" movie. But nonetheless the film delievers in riveting action sequeneces one after another. The film is a blast and it is definitely a must-own for the action fanatics.

The movie had an awesome plot, I thought. If you like sci-fi movies, then you should get this.

Any discussion of "2009 Lost Memories" will inevitably get into spoiler territory. Here goes:

The film starts with an intriguing idea: what if Japan had allied with the United States against Germany and won World War II, maintaining for itself the Greater East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere and keeping all of Korea as a Japanese province? The ethnic Korean hero of the film has the opportunity to "set things right," a thing that will result in much suffering for Korea during both World War II and the Korean War. A great film could have been made from these ideas, but this effort is less than a masterpiece. It is a competently made, adequately acted thriller which could have been much more.

YI agree the initial idea was promising but its full potential was never realized resulting in a film that was too long and at times a chore to watch.AH1706

Blah!

Considering the story premise sounds promising and the cast is fantastic this film is a complete bore.

I love this film I think it's one of the best Asian movies I have ever seen. This is the reason I started seeing them.

This movie is one of the best Asian movies that I have ever seen. The action is incredible. The storyline is only a prelude to a bigger historical event. It is sort of like a "metal gear soldidish type storyline;" that includes a plot which is a prelude to a bigger and more complicated event. I recommend this movie if you are looking for action, drama, and a little bit of romance.

Fantastic movie! You can most definately see the money spent on the making on this film. The special effects, the guns, the sound, and the feel of the whole movie is justified through a fantastic solid storyline only a few may ever fully appreciate.

2009 Lost Memories is a "what if" movie. What if Ito Hirobumi had never been assassinated? (I actually had to do research to fully understand the importance of this man) The movie depicts a very different Japan whose empire covers the modern day Korean peninsula. Sakamoto (who is Korean) tries to uncover a conspiracy involving a group of Korean Terrorists. However, the plot runs much deeper than that. I cannot say much without ruining any of the unfolding story.

2009 Lost Memories is a fantastic film. Almost a perfect ten. My only complaint is that it may take outside research to fully understand the complexity of the plot. Due to this, the movie may drive away some American audiences away. But if you decide not to do research, at least get it for the action!

The first 15 minutes of this film will tell you that something epic-like will happen. The alternate Japan reality is quite interesting as this alternate "history" unfolds within the first few seconds of the film.

The special effects and sets are well made. They only add to the film's environment. As the mystery unfolds, Sakamoto's relentless pursuit of the truth while trying to dodge his Korean heritage and his father's past is hsown at a good pace. Unfortunately, some other "facts" in the film are not made to known to viewers (i.e.: how the "Lunar Soul" works, is it only one way?).

The gunplay action is better than most Hollywood productions, if not all. Soem very good work by the Korean actors didn't hurt, either.

Overall, a very enjoyable film and a good addition to any...collection.

While typical of Asian films in that the guns fire way too many bullets (they do reload more often than in most films), this is still probably the most exciting action movie I've seen from Korea to date - right up there with Shiri!

The special effects are amazing and the gun battles better than most of Hollywood's stuff, especially in the use of sound.

Of course most American audiences won't know the importance of man who's assassination is prevented (Ito Hirobumi), but the subtitled chronology that follows should be sufficient. All in all, I really enjoyed this one.
