| GO is a roundabout love story of sorts... most of its biggest narrative moments directly or indirectly revolve around Sugihama and Sakurai's romance. However, what makes this such a good film is that, unlike the typical romance-drama or comedy, it is less about the love than it is about the protagonist (although the love is of significance both narratively and for character development) exploring his life and identity. Although he and his father appear to regularly beat eachother, it's never out malice, nor is it abusive - more of an expression of their concern for eachother than anything else. Race relations also play an important role, both as political commentary on the ridiculous stature of race and nationality in the present world, and as a parallel to the generally shakey and confuzed state Sugihama is in (familiar to anyone who's experienced personal indeciciveness).
Stylistically GO is fantastic... great visuals, perfect editing, humorous, heavy and light. Definately worth seeing and one of the better recently made movies i've seen. |
