ABOUT THE DIRECTOR:
"Sometimes, we're shocked to see the way we're living since it is totally different from what we thought what we would be in our child years. Pure innocence without any fear, and unconditional passion and optimistic thinking about the future might be the elements we gradually get to lose as we get older. Through Waikiki Brothers, I wanted to show how difficult and long a fight it would be to stick to one's dream and ideal. I used the comparison of one character who tries to hang on to his childhood dream and ideal (even though his effort is not huge) to people who rationalize living as simply as middle class. The characters in their thirties caught between reality and dream might be a self-portrait of a lot of the audience."

Born 1960. Yim majored in English literature at Han Yang University (1981-1984) in Seoul. She then studied film theory at the graduate school of the same university (1985-1987). In 1988, Yim went to France and studied for a masters degree in film studies at the University Paris 8. She graduated in 1992 and returned to Korea to work as an assistant director to Yeo Kyun-dong, in the film Out to the World.

In 1994 she directed the short film Promenade in the Rain , which won prizes at several international film festivals including Seoul, Clermont Ferrand, Hong Kong, Montecatini and Fribourg.

She made her feature debut with Three Friends in 1996. It premiered at the first Pusan International Film Festival where it won the Netpac award for best Asian film. Three Friends was invited to many international film festivals and received numerous awards.

Waikiki Brothers is director Yim's second feature film.
