| A fairly lightweight but charming story about George (Leon Lai) as an innocent rural policeman assigned to bodyguard a singer, Cinderella (Sammi Cheng), who has had threatening letters sent to her. This is the second Hong Kong adaptation on Hollywood's "The Bodyguard," the first being the 1994 Jet Li film "Bodyguard From Beijing."
George joins her tour, but the problem is her entourage is gay - so Leon has to pretend to be gay as well. A fair amount of humor is derived from this situation. Initial animosity between the two eventually develops into friendship, and soon romance, despite Cindy having to deal with the rigors of the Hong Kong entertainment world, complete with a hostile rival singer and plenty of crazy fans. Humor is derived from a satirical depiction of
Hong Kong entertainment and the trials George faces integrating himself into an all gay entourage.
The story is fresh, the plot is unique and the acting superb. Nothing unexpected happens, but the synergy between the characters, especially Sammi light up the screen, and that's what makes this film worth watching. |
