DIRECTOR'S NOTES:
Neither noble or glorious, our daily lives leave us with accumulating layers of desire-of wanting in our hearts to become an ideal self. Our routine lives repeat themselves, being no more than or just the same as others. Cold and stubborn, reality often hinders our hopes, along with our expectations of change and new occurrences in our lives. Our hopes start small and create fantasies and dreams beyond our capabilities. Then our hopes return us to where we were before and disappear without a trace.

If this is the case, will the film “A Masterpiece in My Life” also conclude as a tedious and despairing story with predictable results as soon as it begins? Of course, the end of the movie unfolds with the protagonist returning to his despair and his monotonous routine. Nothing has changed and the world goes on. The main character’s course of life parallels both the mediocre and uneventful aspects of our lives.

What we should focus on in viewing this film is not the success or failure of dreams but on the protagonist displaying an optimistic attitude towards his life. His ability to mitigate his pain quietly, despite his hard circumstances, and his smiling and optimistic nature, which he maintains to the end, offers us an alternate avenue for hope. The life of In-gi is itself the very masterpiece.

Another device the film, “A Masterpiece in My Life ”, offers is the unique romantic relationships of the supporting characters surrounding In-gi. It is hard to expect our characters to have the “average” or “normal” male and female relationships that often appear in other films. The personalities do not express their emotions but endure their longings from a distance. This situation is not due to any lack of courage but to the conflicts in themselves. However, the film does not interfere with or solve these inner conflicts but merely observes them.

The hesitating love that we cannot express in words, the love that we alone have to bury in our hearts-this I think is the real story that we have to experience in our lives. The film tries to give a pure and innocent nature to the characters. The extremely pure and innocent nature of the cartoon characters our protagonists’ praise-such as Candy who never cries when lonely or sad or Nana and Conan-will transfer to our heroes.

The weight of life sometimes overburdens us. “A Masterpiece in My Life” attempts to lift this burden through laughter and it is just getting ready to give away a gift of “ hope ” to you. I hope this gift equally reaches many people throughout the world.
