The brotherhood theme and intense action may be reminiscent of John Woo, which should not be surprising since director Patrick Leung worked behind the scenes with Woo for years (The Killer, Bullet in the Head, and Hard Boiled). He debuted as a director with the kickboxing drama Somebody Up There Likes Me in 1996. He followed that up with the very dark Beyond Hypothermia and the more broadly accessible though under-appreciated Task Force in 1997.
