A rather interesting slant on life, death, meeting the gate keeper of the neither world and body possession. The title refers to both the overbearing mother and the physical likeness of a poor woman to her. Despite some of the oddities to the translation the story is well written, flows smoothly, easy to follow and has enough serious moments mixed with comedy. Of note, of course is the ever beautiful and skilled Maggie Cheung in one of her early roles. Here you can clearly see her vast acting range shine forth. She plays several people (or rather spirits inhabiting her body) and her ability to switch manners and REALLY get into her role is very enjoyable. This alone would make the film worth the price but included is the bonus everyone involves has wonderful chemistry together. Beneath all this is a message about regrets and a search for lost love. |
