Superb hand to hand combat. I think this is a highly under-rated film. This was a very entertaining movie for the casual fan or the expert. Not in my top ten, but still fun stuff.

Good monkey kung fu in this one. Good pole work as well.

Entertaining and plentiful fighting lightly punctuated by gratuitous storyline. Fight, fight, fight!

NIt was good but not that good, you need to watch the movies you review.KungfuManiac
N5 stars are you serious- this movie was good but not great. Do you like martial arts movies? Because this & "Chocolate" are all right pictures but not worth more than a 2 or 3 star rating.Black Belt Ninja

Totally exciting with a few funny scenes and some top notch choreography and fight scenes. I enjoyed watching this movie and seeing the skillful Ching Siu-Tung show off flexibility, skill, and funny charisma. The only downer to me was the monkey kung fu technique was not emphasized and looked rather average on camera. Overall, a definite kung-fu movie collector's item with a healthy collection of fights.

Wow, forgot about this old school classic, saw it way back in the day. Still think "Iron Monkey" is the best out of all monkey kung fu films. A must have.

One thing must be noted before venturing out to purchase or view "Monkey Kung Fu" (aka "Stroke of Death"), and that is if you're expecting a solid pot, great acting performances and an overall quality equaling some of Shaw Brothers' best, then you better think twice before going any further.

"Stroke of Death" is no epic. In fact it just about manages to hold together a very wonky plot. However, if it's action you're looking for then step right up and indulge in this masterpiece of martial arts action.

The plot is simple: a kung fu master sentenced to death leaves his young, mischievous cellmate one half of a medallion. The youngster (and hero of the tale) escapes prison and goes on a quest to locate the other half of the medallion. Of course, there are a band of bad guys after the same medallion, and once the other half is found our hero and his partner in arms follow its message to locate a monkey kung fu manual. Fists, fights and foes ensue. The fights in this movie do not stop. I have never viewed a kung fu flick with as many fights as this, and each fight is fantastic. The choreography is incredibly diverse and skilled, with some incredible weapons work as well as traditional styles we all know and love.

There are many nods to Yuen Woo Ping's Jackie Chan vehicle, "Drunken Master"--and "nods" is a nice word to use. In places it feels as characters and scenarios have been lifted directly from the original classic.

"Stroke of Death" links up numerous fantastic fight scenes with a lackluster plot. Some action seems way out of place; in particular the fight with the very limber prostitute. It just doesn't seem to matter. Those looking for serious melodrama may want to look elsewhere. For those looking for all out kung fu mayhem with choreography surpassing many movies in the genre, look no further. For an example of how many fights there are in the movie I timed how long it took between the second to last fight and the finale. Three minutes. It doesn't make much room for a plot, but who needs it?

Fantastic fun abounds. Leave your sensibilities at the door and absorb the incredible martial arts on offer.

I could, for some reason never really get into this one. Which is a bit odd, considering how much I love Lo Mar's FIVE SUPERFIGHTERS and I also really enjoyed BOXER FROM THE TEMPLE.

I don't think that the story was handled as well as it could have been. It veers off too much, into scenes that doesn't advance the plot at all. And is basically just Ching Siu Tung goofing around in a teahouse, or brothel or Kung Fu school. These scenes are off course just excuses to have a fight. But it seems disjointed to me.

And as great and funny as I found Kwan Feng's badguy character in FIVE SUPERFIGHTERS, as bland and uninteresting I find him, and his band of crooks in this one.

Most of the fights are good. But a lot of them are more acrobatic goof around's.

In closing, I was pretty disappointed with this one. And don't consider this a Shaw must have by any means.

First of all, the story is pretty cool, but the actors are not convincing, the fights are average and to be honest you kinda lose interest in the movie after 30 minutes.

Don't buy this film.

"Stroke Of Death" is truly an old school gem. "Stroke Of Death" has the best of both worlds: high Shaw Brothers production values and great martial arts choreography and performances you sometimes find in independent productions like the "Secret Rivals." The kung fu in this film is way above average, and I would say better and faster than anything you would find Lau Kar-Leung or Sammo Hung doing in 1979. The story is interesting, and director Lo Mar gives the film a fast pace similar to "Drunken Master" or other Chan films of the same era. Tony Ching Siu-Tung and Hau Chiu Sing are unbelievable and perform some of the most realistic and efficient Monkey Kung Fu you’ll ever see. Some undercranking in the last five minutes almost ruins it for me, but overall I’d say "Stroke Of Death" is a stroke of martial arts genius.

Nothing but kung fu action. Literally. The story is simple yet not gratifying, but the fights are excellent, ranging from gibbon fist to pole fighting to other stuff.

Stroke of Death and 5 Superfighters go well together because they are directed by the same person and share some of the same actors. And of course, the fight choreography is top notch.

Not a bad film. I think some people over rated. Complete rubbish story. The kung fu in the beginning nearly made me think I wasted my money. But as the film progresses, when the main actor fights that real pretty kung fu girls, things start to get exciting. So I mean if you can get past the first half of the film, you will enjoy it, good fight at end!

Don't get me wrong, this was a nice movie to watch. Great action sequences, but what's up with the movies ending? Oh man, it was like Courtney Love's emotional state when she has no more drugs. It was like Peter North's best recording, but he ran out of tape. Oh man what a way to end what I thought was going to be a great movie. Also, the audio sucks on this version. I'm really disappointed. Some people find this movie really awesome, I don't.

Simply brilliant kung fu movie. Really old skool fighting action. The choreografy in this film is better than any I've ever seen and besides that it has a good and entertaining story. Nice settings, great chinese landscape and the two main characters, one very serious the other a bit of a clown, work very well in the movie. All in all an action-packed movie with a hint of comedy, nice story and great locations. To anyone who is a fan of the genre I fully recommend taking this film into your collection.
