| Sol Kyung-Gu portrays a corrupt, brutal and slovenly homicide detective, Kang Chul-Jung, who realizes that Lee Seung-Jae's Cho Kyu-Hwan, while appearing to be a successful financier, is really a conscienceless and greedy murderer. (There is no spoiler to this, as his guilt is demonstrated from the very start.) Kang's pursuit of Cho brings him constant demotions and humiliations, but in the course of the investigation he again becomes an upright defender of the public. Although the subject matter is very serious, there are frequent comedic interludes, mostly with two most bizarre criminals roped into helping Kang unravel the crime.
Sol Kyung-Gu won a much deserved Grand Bell Award (the South Korean equivalent of the Academy Awards) for best actor at the 39th Ceremony of the awards. There have been one quasi-sequel, "Another Public Enemy," in 2005 and one direct sequel, "Public Enemy Returns," in 2008. Sol Kyung-Gu is a versatile and powerful actor, and Lee Seung-Jae's assured performance plays against his usual nice guy persona. |
