| Violence to the max! A roller coaster ride of forbidden romance and graphic violence. Ah Dee (Jackie Cheung) is a member of the elite SWAT team 'The Flying Tigers'. Ah Dee is a bitter, driven man. A man who saw his father accidentally kill his brother when they were both children. His father is a loser ex-cop, known to his friends as Fat Ball, who runs a restaurant and has bad personal habits.
During a heist in a shopping mall, which involves several violent gun battles, the Flying Tigers are called in and the heisters are brought to justice (well actually they are shot dead, but that's justice for you!). They even manage to save a few of the hostages. One of these hostages is Heidi (Sammi Cheung), a headstrong, selfish young lady. The romance is bumpy but Ah Dee and Heidi fall in love. But true love never runs smoothly. Heidi's father is a Triad boss, Ah Dee is a cop (you see where this is going...) and since honour is Hong Kong is a family affair, Ah Dee's father is also implicated.
This starts off a little slow, with a flashback to explain Ah Dee's character, but the action soon gets going. There are running gun battles, fist and knife fights and the obligatory big showdown. The action comes first, but the plot isn't neglected. The romance is sweet, Fat Ball's life induces pity (or scorn depending on your standpoint) and Heidi's father's goons are put in awkward conflicts of loyalty. They don't make them like this in the West, and after years of Hollywood endings Best of The Best's ending had me gawping at the screen for several minutes. A must buy for fans of "Heroic Bloodshed" |
