Chow and Lee play the typical mismatched cop buddies. Chow is the slacker veteran who sports loud Hawaiian shirts and drives around in a spiffed-up Yugo, while Lee is the buffed-out hot-headed rookie. Together, they must try and stop a drug lord.

Tiger on the Beat is just a really fun movie to watch. It's great seeing Chow play totally against type (during the opening scene, he wets himself when a gun is placed to his head, quite the opposite of the super-cool characters he usually plays) and his chemistry with Lee is great. While the plot is by the book, Chow and Lee's rapport really helps keep the film moving, especially during the comedic scenes, such as one where a thug demands that they take off their pants. The scene could have been a real stinker, but Lee and especially Chow pull it off.

The action in Tiger on the Beat is also top-notch and quite inventive. If you want to see Chow kick some ass with his fists instead of a gun, this is a good place to look -- but don't worry, there's plenty of gunfire in the movie and it's quite good, especially the finale, where Chow combines a bungee cord and a shotgun for explosive results. The finale also sports a Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2-inspired chainsaw duel that has to be seen to be believed.

While it may be a bit goofy for some people, Tiger on the Beat is a great "no-brainer" movie. Don't think so hard about "little" things like plot and characterization and you'll have a good time with it.

A goofy cop-buddy film featuring a lazy Chow Yun Fat teamed up with a hot-headed Conan Lee. The beautiful and busty Nina Li is on hand as the key to breaking a big drug ring headed up by a slick Norman Chu and his brother Gordon Liu (with hair!). Pretty boring and silly for the first hour, but the final twenty minutes pay off big time, with Chow Yun Fat's yo-yo shotgun and the big chainsaw fight finale. Outrageous!

The Plot: A beat cop (Chow Yun Fat) and his gung-ho partner (Lee) take on a gang of dope-runners.

Why Would I Like This Movie? Wonderful comedy from Chow Yun Fat, and lots of great kung-fu from Conan Lee. Ti Lung makes a brief but memorable cameo. The final, wildly-over-the-top duel with chainsaws, which made me laugh until tears came to my eyes.

Why Wouldn't I Like This Movie? If you only want to see Chow as a hero, you'll be upset by his role in this movie. Moreover, the sleazy jokes and sexual humour will also affront some action fans. Tiger on the Beat includes an alarming scene in which Chow Yun Fat beats up a woman -- who then nauseatingly falls for him.

Despite being a run-of-the-mill Hong Kong cops-n-drug smugglers flick, Tiger on Beat manages to pack plenty of action and laughs. The film, a Lethal Weapon take-off, stars the irrepressible Chow Yun Fat as a seasoned cop and Conan Lee as his rookie partner. The wacky twosome are up in arms as they try to solve the murder of a heroin trafficker. The film boasts an over-the-top grand finale featuring some insane chainsaw kung fu action which makes the Texas Chainsaw Massacre look like a kid-vid. Don't miss a cameo appearance by A Better Tomorrow's Ti Lung!
