Not really what I expected. The animation was okay, but all the actors were real life, as were the locations, some of the weapons were obviously added in animation, the storyline was okay, but I was not excited by the movie really.

When is an Asian film not an Asian film? When I finished watching Mamoru Oshii's ("Ghost In The Shell", "Patlabor 2", etc) movie, "Avalon", I was surprised to find it filmed in Poland with a Polish cast. Not only that, but the English writer Neil Gaiman wrote part of the screenplay. "Avalon" certainly has a mixed pedigree but is certainly one of the best films I've seen in recent years.

Imagine "The Matrix" and "eXistenZ" mixed with a good measure of Japanese and European film styles and you have the feast that is "Avalon". The opening sequence to this movie is simply jaw dropping...this movie uses CGI in a way that is both original and highly effective. I am still gobsmacked by the action on the screen...simply brilliant.

The plot revolves around virtual reality gamers in a distant and very grey future where success in computer battles leads to financial rewards and a hope of some creature comforts. Gaming is not without risks - many players suffer brain death by becoming trapped in the imaginative worlds created for their pleasure. The main character, Ash, is a beautiful woman who has become an extremely successful player and who now wants to access a higher level than the other competitors. This level is almost mythical amongst gamers and many fear to attempt entry as the stakes are high....

I won't say anymore about the storyline as this film should be discovered and I don't want to spoil any surprises. What the film offers is visuals that are amazing...I've criticised the use of CGI before but the effects in "Avalon" are, in my humble opinion, far more successful than those in "Attack of the Clones" and other Hollywood fodder.

The film also has the most incredible soundtrack...I can't recommend it enough. Beautiful.

If you like your science fiction dark and gritty, this may be the movie for you.

Just imagine that you hooked in, hooked in to a vast system that allows you the exclusive rights to kill or to be killed. Enter the world of Avalon, where Internet capabilities offer reality. This mind bending affair is presented unlike never seen before. Experience this for yourself.

It's not an action-packed, mind-blowing thing. The special effects are scarce but well used. The scenery is well done and everything is "mood" related. I found there was some boring scenes. Still, it is an interesting film to watch.

Beautiful and brilliant. Oshii's best film. However, it is slowly paced and features only three real action scenes, so do not go into this expecting some exciting shoot-em-up action adventure in the style of the increasingly stupid Matrix movies.

Despite being visually impressive and somewhat entertaining, Avalon hardly has a soundtrack to support the film's super-slow pace and convoluted imagery, making Avalon just too monotonous, non-stimulating and unenjoyable to watch.

Rent it if you want to,...just don't buy the damn thing!

The visuals in this film are indeed amazing, but the sepia tones, slower than slow pace, and unsympathetic main character made me regret purchasing this film...

I'd strongly recommend you rent it before buying it, because you may well find it astonishing...or absolutely boring, like me.

Amazing! This along with "Blade Runner" and "Dark City" is one of my all time favorite cyberpunk/futuristic movies. If you're looking for the whambam CGI action bonanza of "The Matrix" (another good movie) then leave "Avalon" alone. If you're looking for a more tranquil, beautiful and cerebral sci-fi film, then pick this up.

Just got done watching this puppy, and I've got to say as a fan of Mamaru Oshii's previous "Beautiful Dreamer", as well as films like Cronenberg's "eXistenZ" which it has been compared to, this did not disappoint. Pretty visually stunning, and definitely visually unique. Other people commented on the low-key acting negatively, but I'd have to say the acting is fine. The acting doesn't upstage the film, which is good... I highly reccomend this.

A great movie not for everybody. A straight out warning, this movie is filmed mostly in black and white (well, actually dark yellow brownish) . It is very slow paced. If you survive til the end, and actually understand the symbolic ending, you will be a happy camper. Again, a great movie, just not for everybody. Art majors would probably like this movie, because it's a whole different field than the typical sci-fi.

I'm afraid one has not to know Polish to enjoy this film. The dialogue is dull and the actors (some of them really good otherwise, esp. W. Kowalski) speak as if they had never attended any acting lessons, let alone schools of dramatic arts.

I was also awfully disappointed and disgusted by the philharmonic hall episode at the end of the film. It's much too long and it really hurts to understand the words of the bombastic song (or whatever it is from the musical point of view) performed there.

Like Tron, only boring.

The effects and cinematography are interesting in the virtual reality world, and I like the push-color parts within the sepia tone, but the movie as a whole is slow moving and uneventful.

This could have been half an hour long if they didn't shoot it all in slow motion.

Beautiful. Amazing. Gorgeous. Brilliant. These are some of words that can be used to describe this film. Because really, this film is all of the above. It's beautiful and features some of the most amazing visuals I've ever seen. Everything is so right in this film, from the gorgeous cinematography to the brilliant score. The acting is solid, the story is interesting, the direction works. To simply put it, Mamoru Oshii is a god. The guy is good at directing anime, but this film more than proves that his real talents lie elsewhere.

I'm tempted to say that the plotline is somewhat similar to The Matrix, but the similarities are only on the surface. In a not too distant future, young people are getting their kicks from a virtual reality wargame. The game has dangers, as sometimes players are unable to come back from the game. However, despite the dangers, the best players play to get massive respect and loads of money, although some play just to achieve the higher experience levels. One of these players is the lovely Ash (Malgorzata Foremniak), an ex-member of the elite WIZARD team, who's currently playing solo. She is forced to gather a party as she goes in search of the mythical nine sisters, and the legendary ghost that can open a passage to the highest level.

Ok, admitted the storyline doesn't sound too impressive. But somehow, Mamoru Oshii manages to make it all very plausible. After ten minutes, the world of Avalon seemed very real. In a unreal, hypervisual way at least. This is mainly achieved by the amazing cinematography. Looking at the film, it's quite obvious that Oshii was very much influenced by Eastern bloc directors and films. The whole film looks more like something that Andrei Tarkovsky could've directed instead of looking Japanese. In fact, nothing in this film looks japanese. The visual style is very Polish, and the world of Avalon looks like it's stuck in the communist era. The cinematography by Grzegorz Kedzierski uses the scenery brilliantly, and he manages to make a difference between the Virtual Reality and Reality using subtle hints, coupled with some of the more outrageous visual effects employed by Oshii.

And the amazing score by Kenji Kawai deserves a mention too. It's amazing. Whereas his score for Oshii's Ghost in the shell sounded somewhat minimalist and japanese, this time he has gone for a very classic sound. I don't have words to describe how great it is. It fits in the film perfectly, setting an unique feel that goes very well with the amazing visuals.

However, Avalon is not all perfect. Although the story is good, the actors are all brilliant and I liked Oshii's direction, the characters are somewhat shallow, and their motives are somewhat vague. Also, the pacing was bit off, with the middle of the film being somewhat empty. A nice action scene like in the beginning would've helped things out tremendously. That said, even though Avalon has few amazing action scenes, they are few in between all the talky bits and fans of hardcore action won't find much to enjoy here. However, if you are not afraid of actually having to think a bit while watching a film, Avalon is highly recommended.

WHOA!!! This film will not disappoint sci-fi fans. AVALON is an excellent film along the lines of "The Matrix" and "Ghost in the Shell". Oshii does a very good job directing this film. The excellent usage of monotone and colour film is evident throughout the film to offer contrast and also indicate a change in reality. Is it truly reality? Or is reality really being changed? You have to see the film to decide for yourself. A must have for the sci-fi fan's film collection.

Awesome film. If you like movies that leave you asking questions at the end, this is for you. Avalon reminds me of Ghost in the Shell. Ash even looks like a real Major Kusanagi!

"Avalon" is a genius piece of story-telling and so visually stunning that it is overwhelming for just one viewing. My wife didn't care for it because she thought it was all flash and no substance. She is right in some ways, but misguided.

"Avalon" is not to be viewed for it's story, but rather for the journey it takes you on...

If you have heard the buzz and are dying to see it, get it, and get it quick. It is something special to behold.
