Drunken Tai Chi All Content Used With Permission. ![]() I am in the miniority of people that didn't care for this movie. The ultra low budget really killed this for me, as well as there being more comedy than fighting. It was really weird seeing Donnie Yen doing comedy; I can't remember any other movie of his where he does comedy. The few fight scenes Donnie has are pretty good, there just weren't enough of them for me. -William Giordanella (see my profile) ![]() This is Donnie Yen's movie debut, and I must say it wasn't bad. However, don't go in expecting "SPL" or "Flash Point" action, because this film was back in the 70's where kung fu films dominated China. I'd give this film a higher rating but the drunken tai chi didn't seem like anything refreshing. It's just regular tai chi with a drunk-acting master (who is actually one of Yuen Wo Ping's brothers). The fight scenes, however, are impressive, but not as great as other films Yuen Wo Ping did during this era, such as "Drunken Master", "Buddhist Fist", or "Snake In Eagle's Shadow". Also it's funny how Donnie Yen is actually doing some comedy in the film and not your typical hardass, like 90% of his other films. This isn't a bad movie and is definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of Donnie Yen or just love kung fu films. ![]() Yuen Wo Ping wacky, with great, inventive fights and funky special effects. Suspend your disbelief and watch this one, preferably with that Bucktooth Jane gal from "Kung Fu Hustle"... ![]() Donnie Yen is the man as he defeats a mad killer. -DarkHumour (see my profile) ![]() If the filmmakers had more money to work with on this production, I think this film would have been a five star movie. Take away a few stars for production values. Other than that, great story and great martial arts choreography by the great Yuen Wo Ping and company. Donnie Yen delivers Tai Chi moves with fantastic flare! -Little Dragon Fan (see my profile)
![]() Pure Entertainment--everything about this movie is good--even the comedy (which is rare). The fights and the overall style of the movie makes it a must see! ![]() A decent film for any Yuen Wo Ping fan. This may be Donny Yen's first martial arts film, but displays his Tai Chi fighting style very believably. The fight choreography is not bad but not the best from Yuen Woo Ping. ![]() ![]() Great choreography, but fight sequences are too short. ![]() It's a very good martial arts cum comedy movie. I like it very much. I would like to have more on this type of movie. ![]() Love to see a young Donnie Yen. I bought this DVD twice, I love it. A slow showdown, but everything else is very good. Highly recommended, if you like tai chi! ![]() This is Donnie's first lead starring film, and have to say it was brilliant! There were so many ideas and so many actions going on that you have to watch it again. Donnie's so charismatic with his martial arts action, and he also adds some action comedy. In fact it's the first film I've seen that had the most filming ideas. You can definitely feel the heat too. The martial arts action is mainly fast paced with some slow motions. If you get the HK Cantonese version, the sound is quality is perfect, especially it's like listening to Cantonese and dramatic Hong Kong style sound effects. There are loads of fights, some fun, some fast, some playing about and testing fights, some long great fights. Overall a great Donnie Yen film that every fan should see. ![]()
![]() This film is brillant, if you liked druken master get this movie, you won't regret it! After watching this movie I wondered about Donnie Yen. Why isn't he as big as Jackie Chan or Sammo Hung? Reason is he fell in to the trap of using too many special effects, it makes him look like he hasn't got a clue what he is doing. ![]() NOTE: This review refers to the double-feature DVD from Ground Zero. The 4 [stars out of 5] rating is because Drunken Tai Chi shows Yuen Wo Ping doing some early stuff with fireworks and a very young Donnie Yen doing some great action scenes. But for the price, if you decide to buy a DVD while here, it is a good movie to add to you collection.
