Ya gotta love the name, huh? Anyway, this is the first of two Chinese comedies I picked up on import DVD. I'm not much of a fan of the comedy genre (whether it's American, Chinese, Japanese, Martian, or what have you), but I decided to take the chance so here's my review of GORDAN CHAN and JAMES YUEN's silly but kinda watchable EVERY DOG HAS HIS DATE flick. It stars (NICK) CHEUNG KA FAI and MICHELE REIS, a simply gorgeous Eurasian (half Chinese, half Portuguese) gal. Well, Michelle plays SHARON, a career minded business woman in the commercial filmmaking field and she's looking for that special fella to be her boyfriend. She's got plenty of money and lives in a nice apartment with her dog, MAN (who loves her deeply), but yet she just doesn't seem to have good luck when it comes to guys. She always manages to hook up with the "bad boy" types who tend to disappear after they get her into bed. So, one day she hires Nick's character FAI, a sleazy and total scumbag set designer, for a big job. The pair really don't get along but they're forced to work together for the time being. Now, during a nighttime visit at Fai's home, Sharon's recalled back to the studio and leaves her dog, Man, in the car. While she's gone, a major lightning storm rolls in, scaring the snot outta Man, and he takes off into Fai's house. He promptly goes about leaving nice piles of steamy doggie-doo everywhere that enrage Fai to no end. He grabs a butcher knife and swears to kill the damn mutt. He chases the mongrel back outside and around in the rainy neighborhood. Suddenly, they're both struck by the same bolt of lightning and by some freak of nature, they switch bodies (don't ask me how, this is Chinese, remember). So, Fai (his human mind now trapped inside the dog's body) accidentally gets shipped out of town in a moving truck. And Man (the dog's mind inside the human body of Fai), tries to make it back home to Sharon. Well, you can guess the rest of the movie now, can't you?. Man (who knows exactly what kind of guy Sharon's looking for) is stuck in Fai's human body so as hard as he tries, it's going to very difficult for them to get together because she hates the former Fai so much. But alas, this will turn into a love story so you know what's going to eventually happen, right? Meanwhile, Fai (who's really enjoying his new dog body) decides to go on big adventure after big adventure throughout China so he's in no hurry to swap back bodies. And that's pretty much that. Okay, I know what you're thinking... it's stupid, huh? And I will admit that it certainly was and I wouldn't have dare dreamed of watching an American movie that had the same story but for some reason, I was kinda interested in seeing a Chinese comedy. So, I guess I'll have to make the exception this time. But don't hold me to it, because I'll deny to the world that I ever saw this movie in the first place!
