This film, being a Yuen Biao movie, delivers some hardcore action and life threatening stunts and is sure to please action and martial arts fans. However, there are times when the film feels slow and the finale at the end wasn't as great as I though it'd be, due to the fact that the villain was garbage compared to Yuen Biao. Cynthia Rothrock is awesome here, and if you get the Dragon Dynasty DVD you'll witness the alternate ending. A young Louis Fan also stars in this film and, trust me, he looks nothing like he does in "Story Of Ricky". Packed with action, a decent story and performance, this film is a must-see.

I think the international title better fits this movie than the original, because everyone in this film seems to be "Above The Law".

As a martial movie it has everything to make this a true classic: some great fight scenes, Yuen Biao, big stunts, quality actors, Yuen Biao, likeable characters, an extremely villainous villain that you want to see get his comeupance--and did I say Yuen Biao?

With all of that, I really wanted to like this movie because I'm a fan of Yuen Biao (if you hadn't realized).

I hear you ask, what let this film down? I would have to say its lenience towards the international maket. Don't get me wrong, I love the way that everyone in this film is expendable (I mean everyone), and the dark ending (I've seen both) must been seen to be believed.

Not even the blatant stunt doubling done by Mr. Biao (at times he's doubling for Cynithia Rothrock) or his stunt team isn't that off-putting.

I personally feel that the drive for international appeal has made this film feel a bit lackluster.

We all know that Yuen Biao was the acrobatic leg master of the three brothers. This film is no "Prodigal Son" or "Knockabout", which displayed his outstanding martial abilities in top form.

Even Yuen Biao himself states that he feels this film didn't showcase his ablities.

Don't get me wrong, this is an entertaining watch, but this is far from the best of Mr. Biao's work.

Superb movie!

Yuen Biao's acrobatic moves plus Rothrock's fighting skills make it a classic. A must-have for all martial arts fans.

One of the greatest action/martial arts flix to come out of Hong Kong from the 80's!! It contains some of the best fight/action scenes from this genre! With Corey Yuen (Yuen Kwai) in the director's chair and also action director alongside Yuen Biao, need I say more??? If you're a fan of this genre with the likes of "Yes, Madam", "In The Line Of Duty", "Tiger Cage" series, then do not miss this gem at your peril.

This is what Hong Kong action cinema is all about. It is also a shame that this type of actioner will never be repeated. Yes, we have recent gems like "SPL", "Flash Point", and the likes of Tony Jaa to carry the action flag going forward, but this for me is the essence of true Hong Kong action.

OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS: "Blonde Fury" (AKA "Righting Wrongs 2"), "Angry Ranger" (VCD only), "Nite Life Hero" (VCD Only), "Outlaw Brothers", "Licence To Steal" (VCD Only), "Dragons Forever", "She Shoots Straight", "Police Story" series.

A well-made film with some cool fight scenes, but it was a bit too much of a downer for me.

I was looking forward to seeing this movie. Unfortunately, I feel it was over-hyped. Yuen Biao shines as usual when he is the leading role, and Melvin Wong did an excellent job as the bad guy. The action and fight scenes were pretty good, but the movie is really boring at times and Cynthia Rothrock was really annoying in my opinion. Overall this movie has its high points but is let down by its really low points. If you're a fan of Yuen Biao, then watch it. He is the man.

I love to see female fighters treated just like male fighters in a fight scene. The fight scene between Cynthia Rothrock and Karen Shepherd is one of the better ones I have seen.

Yuen Biao is great and shows of some incredible moves. Pretty violent, always a good thing. And Mrs. Rothrock has a superb bout against another woman.

YI agree. This was Biao's turn to shine and I believe he delivered. I also agree that the fight between Rothrock and Karen Shepherd was pretty intense.William Giordanella

Martial arts action fans will be highly entertained by this wonderful Hong Kong classic! With an ensemble cast of actors and athletes, and directed by Corey Yuen Kwai, "Above The Law" stands as one of the most memorable fighting movies to date, with wonderful fight choreography by Yuen Biao, Sammo Hung (uncredited) and Corey Yuen himself!

Great execution and overall physical performances by the cast, including Karen Shephard and Peter Cunningham!

Take it from a fan--"Above The Law" represents the the very nature and essence of Hong Kong martial arts action!!!

OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS: "Kiss Of The Dragon", "Dragons Forever", "She Shoots Straight", "The Blonde Fury", "Royal Warriors", "The Transporter" and "The Transporter 2".

Great old-school fights. It's kind of funny, they don't do the 80's fight style anymore, but great work.

This is one of the best HK actioners. It can be brutal at times, but it's a great movie overall. I wish Yuen Biao and Cynthia Rothrock had made more movies together.

Wow, the fight scenes in this movie were pretty serious and fierce especially the acrobatic kick unleashed by Yuen Biao in the final showdown against Melvin Wong. You definitely have to see it in slow mo several times.

When I first saw this movie back in the 80s, it was one of my favorite HK flix, but after seeing it again, it's down on my list due to poor editing and some stupid plots. Melvin Wong did a fantastic job as the villain.

I enjoyed fight scenes between Biao and Peter Sugarfoot Cunningham (which could have been more elaborate and longer) as well as the duel between Cynthia Rothrock and Karen Shephard...and lets not forget the Biao and Rothrock fight.

In this movie, planes, cars and bullets go flying. People get beat up, shot, strangled, stabbed, and blown apart. A couple of folks plunged to their deaths. Bombs explode, cars explode, planes explode. Furniture, glass, and bones are broken. Bad guys die, and good guys die, too. There's some comedy, some drama, some tragedy. Sounds like a great movie, right? WRONG!!!

It's hard to believe that a movie which has almost everything in it, can be so dull and boring! But it is.

It has probably THE worst use of a stunt double ever (for Cynthia Rothrock)!

In another scene, Yuen Biao jumps off the balcony and lands on a fake ground--you can actually see mats move!

But the major problem of the movie is that most of the action is nothing out the ordinary:

The parking garage scene is mostly a bad mix of undercranking, slow mo, and a dummy at one moment.

The "Fight" between Biao and Cunningham is plain boring--hardly any martial arts involved! It makes Chris Tucker from the "Rush hour" series look like a better fighter!

The Biao vs. Rothrock "Fight" is mostly some basic acrobatics performed by Yuen while dodging some objects that Cynthia keeps throwing at him!

On the good side though there are 3 things I liked:

  1. A great fight between Rothrock and Karen Shepherd who doesn't play some psychotic, out-of-control bitch but rather a concentrated cold-blooded professional killer.
  2. Cynthia's final showdown in the hangar. Fast, furious, brutal. Great stuff!
  3. Unlike many other movies, where heroes are always being miraculously saved at the last moment or survive being thrown off a skyscraper and shot dozens of times, in this movie heroes actually die. I really liked the ending (even though it was kinda' stupid).
So, overall, it's not a good movie, it's not a bad movie, it's a DISSAPOINTING movie.

The Good: Like "Royal Warriors", "Righting Wrongs" is a great-paced Hong Kong film with guts. Filled with Corey Yuen's amazing choreography and some jaw-dropping action sequences, this is Yuen Biao's answer to "Police Story". Also starring Cynthia Rothrock, who never looked better kicking serious ass on-screen. "Righting Wrongs" is more violent than your average Hong Kong action-film and features many unexpected fatalities from beginning to end.

The Bad: Despite the great choreography, "Righting Wrongs" suffers from poor editing during most of it's action shots. I can't even count how many body doubles were so obviously spotted. For instance, there is an awful closeup of a male body double for Cynthia Rothrock with BLACK hair and dark skin - For some reason, they have him standing-in for a scene that involves a simple kick over a table!? It's ironic, considering the fact that just seconds before this, Cynthia was flying all over the place.

Bottom Line: RWs features all the ingredients that make Hong Kong cinema so tasty.

If you like them 80's modern times martial arts action flicks a'la "Dragons Forever", then this is the one for you! The plot is simple, storytelling is uneven but the fighting is fast-paced and powerful. Yuen Biao is great as always, doing some very impressive flipping and kicking. Rothrock, though I never personally liked her, also has a couple spectacular fight scenes, most notably the great duel with Karen Shephard. Surprisingly the comedy scenes (most involving director Yuen Kuai and Wu Ma as a son and a father) aren't too bad either.

If you can, get the HK version. I've only seen that version but everybody's saying thit it's far superior to the dubbed international print. The HK version is one of the most pessimistic movies I've seen in my life. More good guys are killed that in your avarage Chang Cheh movie! EVERYBODY dies! The ending is bloody mervelous [they changed it for the international version, because the audience was too shocked]. (SPOILER WARNING HERE) First, we get to see a huge screw pushed through Cynthia Rothrock's neck. Then the main bad guy steals an airplane and tries to escape but of course Yuen Biao makes it on the plane too. During the fight they loose the control of the plane and it crashes and explodes. Fortunately, Yuen Biao managed to jump from the plane. And lands safely in the water below? No, the plane was flying too high and when he hits the water surface, he dies. The last picture is a shot of Yuen Biao's body floating in the water, then the movie ends. Cool? I liked it.

An instant classic. Cynthia Rothrock's best movie by a mile. Contains a handful of the best fight scenes I've seen. Vintage Yuen Biao. A gritty movie that's not bound by the conventions of the unmitigatedly happy ending...
