Classic train/revenge/kill story. Overall an entertaining martial arts movie with a good cast (no prominent star except maybe Wilson Tong). Prominent styles are Monkey and Snake and well performed. Good choreography. Plenty of action. Low budget movie but definitely worth watching.

Snake in the Monkey's Shadow follows the same formula as Snake in the Eagle's Shadow, Drunken Master, Jade Claw, and Super Power. If you liked those films, you'll most likely like this one. Its the typical story of a student who learns kung fu then due to some tragic circumstances learns even more advanced kung fu to take revenge. What's interesting was John Chung playing as the hero. He usually played bad guys in Shaw Brothers, Executions from Shaolin and 36th Chamber of Shaolin. What's also good to see are dependable stars Hau Chiu Sing and Wilson Tong. The fight choreography is a bit slow but entertaining.

One of my all-time favorite martial arts flicks. Typical train-and-get-revenge movie, but an excellent array of fighting styles which I love: Monkey, Snake, Drunken, and Dragon--especially the Drunken style, one of my favorites. I love a flick that contains a lot of different style fights. This is another film that I watch frequently.

One of my favorite old school flicks of all time...low production value but some of the best snake and monkey style fighting I've ever seen.

[As a martial arts fan], it was a great surprise to view the uncut version of the film. This is definitely one of the best movies that display the Monkey Style and Drunken Style Kung Fu. The movie involves the story of revenge as a student's friend and teacher are killed by 2 assassins. [The uncut version] is a great addition to any collection.

One of the greatest movies to ever display the monkey technique. This film actually has footage of a monkey fighting a snake! The good guy sees this while burying his friend and combines drunken boxing with the monkey fist to prepare him for the final showdown with 2 snake fist experts.

This movie is excellent in every way. If you love old school action with good fight choreograpy and a good movie plot, then this movie is a must see and must buy. There is never a dull moment in this action-flick. The styles used in this movie are perfectly mastered. The classic "monkey against snake" is perfect action. I've must have watch this one a dozen times, and each time never fails.

Super classic 70s style kung fu film with perhaps best monkey versus snake fights ever filmed. Excellent story, super battles. Has everything you would want. A must-have.

NOTE: This review refers to the DVD by Xenon Pictures.

This is a very fun movie. Sure, the barely-existent plot is tried and true and tried AGAIN--but the kung fu! Johnny Chang (Chaing) will probably be known to many people as the back-breaking villain in "DRAGON: The Bruce Lee Story" (for which he is responsible for the action choreography). You have probably seen him getting the stuffing knocked out of him in more than a few Jackie Chan actioners. But if that's all you've seen, you have yet to see him truly shine. He performs (along with many other equally talented martial artists) some phenomenal kung fu. His Drunken Boxing is quite awesome. When he combines it with his powerful Monkey technique, the movie really starts jumping.

The flick was most certainly a DRUNKEN MASTER knock-off, but damned it if doesn't rock! You do have the "funny scenes" (my least favorite part of kung fu films, epitomized by Dean Shek characters), which are juvenile and not terribly funny. But the villains are suitably evil and have smooth and lethal Snake kung fu worthy of testing Johnny's Drunken Monkey Fist (conceived of, of course, while watching a monkey fight a cobra).

...The [DVD] is dubbed in English (the same voice-over star that dubbed a lot of Jackie Chan's early films dubs Johnny Chang), and the action suffers from time to time as a result of the full-frame pan and scan framing. But the action smokes and the price is right. If they had given just a little more thought to character and story it would certainly have scored a four star rating. Hope you dig it.

Update: The scenes of the real monkey battling the cobra have been edited out of this print. I hate censorship, but I also hate cruelty to animals, and it was a pretty nasty scene. During Johnny Chang's final fight, the animal scenes were also interspersed to show comparisons. These are also missing. We get the snake approaching the monkey, and one shot during the fight showing the monkey kicking. About 3-and-a-half minutes are missing from the film.
