This is a wonderful movie about the contemporary China history. Zhang Yimou succeed to show us the troubles we can find in a communist society. The actors are strong. I feel all emotions. They play very well. Nobody is completely bad or good. The gambling problems in China still exist today. The pictures are so beautiful. I recommand this movie to anybody.

I saw this movie once several years ago, and it's stayed with me ever since: this is one of the most moving and worthwhile films of the 90's, and possibly one of the great humanist films of all time.

"Lifetimes" has complex yet sympathetic characters, outstanding production values, natural and convincing acting, and a thoroughly fascinating plot. As we follow one family through nearly half of China's tulmultuous 20th-century history, gripping historical events and their impact on ordinary, decent people come together very potently.

Besides being an example of wonderful storytelling in its own right, this film also a illustrates, very tangibly, the universality of the human experience. Many Westerners may find Chinese culture and history (what little most of us know of it) to be alien or even puzzling; but the values, hopes, and joys of the characters in this film (and their disappointments and tribulations too, to be sure) should ring true to anybody, anywhere.

I can't recommend this film highly enough!

This is a film about a man's journey through the disruptions of the Chinese cultural and social classes. The decline of his family, his struggle to survive, and his attainment of happiness are all beautifully portrayed. This film hits home on many key issues regarding the revolution in China. If have not seen this magnificent piece, I highly advise you to see this.
