| When cop Sam Hui has a sexual encounter with a stranger he has no idea that she will become the main suspect in his next murder case. Sam investigates a series of murders where all of the victims have bought insurance policies from the same woman and all their bodies are found with traces of snake DNA. It is only when the police pull in the saleswoman Penny Ng (Carrie Ng) that Sam realises his awkward position. He doesn't do anything to alleviate the situation as he finds himself becoming obsessed with her. Meanwhile a rival saleswoman, Wendy (Diana Pang Dan), is using sex to steal Penny's clients. When Penny realises this it drives her further into her addiction for a strange snake serum.
What begins as an interesting erotic thriller quickly becomes boring. The focus switches away from the murders and more towards the rivalry between Penny and Wendy. Sure Carrie Ng looks as sexy as ever and Diana Pang Dan is quite fetching in bondage gear but its not really enough to keep the story engaging. I hoped that things might pick up in the film's climax but there isn't one and the ending is as unsatisfactory as the rest of the film.
There's obviously been inspiration from Basic Instinct with an interrogation scene (although Carrie Ng keeps her knees firmly together) and repeated sequences in night clubs. However there isn't the same sense of intrigue to keep you guessing to the end, you just don't care who did it. Insurance policies just aren't a thrilling or sexy subject.
Carrie Ng seemed to have made a bit of a niche for herself in the CatIII market but she could have done better as her acting in the movie is actually quite good. Diana Pang Dan is perfectly suited to this genre however... |
