Donnie Yen is the man! He steals the show from the actors with his charisma and fighting prowess! There's a lot of good action in this flick, along with some funny moments here and there; but then again, we're here for the action and yes it delivers fully.-Movie Freak (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!
This is an awesome martial arts film! I am a huge fan of the 80's flicks. The kung fu 80's movies get into the action right away and never slow down one bit. The stories are intriguing plus you get real gritty action sequences.
"In The Line of Duty 4" is my fave of the 7 films in the series. The action is insane and, well, the movie is kind of cheesy but all ind all it's well worth it. Donnie Yen is kicking ass in this movie plus dragging on the back of a motorcycle. The movie is amazing! -KungfuManiac (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!| AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | Y | I agree. | What up to all you ninjas, samurai, warrior monks, knights, cowboys and outlaws out there? How are you folks doing? I am here today reviewing one of the grand champions of classic contemporary HK cop action. Now I know what you folks are saying. Is he really giving a movie with a completely generic plot and some pretty bad acting a five star rating just because of exemplary martial arts with high quantity? You're goddamn right I am. As I have stated in previous reviews my feelings about factoring in genre and acknowleging the intent of the movie into reviews I will merely present the following analogy to support my reasoning. Grading a movie is like judging the sex appeal of a woman. Many factors are taken into account depending on taste and standards (legs, ass, tits, face, sense of humor, intellect, etc.). When said woman is, say, less adequate in certain areas (flat butt, plain face, flat chest, dim-witted, etc.) you may deduct points, but that does not necessarilly mean that those points are permanently lost. See, if this woman is "gifted" in certain departments (very beautiful face, large "lung capacity", perfectly toned legs, clever sense of humor, etc.) then extra points can be earned, which in turn can bring up the total grade or rating of said person or thing under scrutiny. It works the same with movies. Not every flick you love is a "perfect" movie, but when you are grading them, some strong aspects can make up for some weak aspects. "In The Line Of Duty" is so strong in the action department that everything else can just sit down and shut it. The martial arts in this movie is so damn tight and well ranged that you'll be like Crouching-what? Hidden-who-gives-a-fuck?! Yuen Cheng Yan and Donnie Yen craft some of the sickest fight scenes around and serve out the total package: good punches, awesome kicks, good throws, some in close (okay it is kind of short in the fu weapon department but so what?). You know what's a good fight everytime it occurs on screen? Donnie vs. John Salviti. Know what's just as good? Donnie vs. Michael Woods. These match-ups are right up there with Ali vs. Frasier, Daredevil vs. Bullseye (comics, not movie), or even in the same neighborhood: Jackie vs. Benny. This movie was "Ong-Bak" over a decade before there was "Ong-Bak". On a personal note, can anyone out there tell me who that short guy is that plays, like, three characters in the movie including the bad guy in the end fights that had the glasses? He was bad ass.
HIGHLIGHTS AND STUFF YOU'LL REMEMBER: Cynthia Khan is hanging from a bus but still manages to hinging axe kick a guy positioned slighty above her position. Sweet. John Salviti shows off his hyper active, retarded crackhead kung fu style. Funny. Donnie nails John S. with a jump spinning hook/side kick combo that you ain't ever seen and you won't forget. F'n awesome! Previously mentioned short dude from the end fights. Dude fights with the energy of someone that is aiming to hospitalize.
FINAL THOUGHTS: Absolutely essential for any fu-fanatic. And is anybody with me when I say I want to see Donnie Yen as Shang Chi master of kung fu in a live action movie adaption of the comic book? |

A movie starring third-string Yuen brother Yuen Yat Chor and Michael Wong, in a wafer thin story doesn't sound all that great. Luckily the movie also stars Cynthia Khan and Donnie Yen, who never fail to bring the pain. So now you're off to a good start. Put them in a multitude of kick ass fight scenes, and things are starting to look up. Throw in heavy hitters like Yuen Shun Yee, Cho Wing, John Salvitti and Michael Woods in said fight scenes, and now you really have something here. Add some insane car and motorcycle action, some shootouts, some swordfighting, and some pretty crazy stunts, and what do you end up with? A true 80's HK action must-have. Forget the non-existent story, forget Yat Chor's annoying and wimpy character, forget Michael Wong's failed attempt at acting. Just focus on the action.-JAY LEE (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!| AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | Y | I know that's right. Right there with you, bro. p.s. Awesome fighting. No story. But awesome fighting. One scene is hilarious with some white "assassin" fighting Donnie Yen. His STYLE is truly unique. :)

This is a fairly entertaining adventure about two cops working to stop an international drug smuggling syndicate, and the action travels from Seattle to Hong Kong. A traitorous US federal agent complicates matters, and the two heroes (or should I say hero and heroine, played by Donnie Yen and Cynthia Khan, respectively), must go around the law to see justice done.
In Hong Kong action flicks it seems pretty commonplace, even obligatory for "good" cops to routinely ignore the rules to win the day. If you can suspend your disbelief over such matters, then the movie comes to a satisfying conclusion. -EC1872 (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!
A great follow-up to part 3 with a lot more fight scenes executed brilliantly by the stars, including Donnie Yen!-The 8th Sword (see my profile) http://sourceofthefist.freehostia.com/wordpress/ LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!
Whilst the story might not be the most original around, the action more than makes this film worth a watch. Cynthia Khan and the ever-watchable Donnie Yen kick up a storm chasing corrupt CIA agents across the globe. Plenty of humour too, especially Donnie in Yun Yat Choh's mother's house.
Also, watch for Cynthia's first fight. She does an impressive jumping spin kick but, turns out, on closer inspection (ah, DVD zoom), to look suspiciously like Donnie Yen in a wig! -John Firth LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!

| Hong Kong action fans often praise or pan films based on its action scenes. Based on these criteria alone, In The Line Of Duty IV should be a classic, but it isn't. Crammed full with acrobatics, kung fu, evil villains, and some amazing stuntwork, I never hear fans even discuss it. Poor characterizations are a large part of the disrespect this film receives. Even die-hard fans must find it difficult make an emotional investment in the adventures of a cold, uninteresting female cop (Khan) and surly, abusive American cop (Yen) and Michael Wong (duh?) as they track an innocent HK immigrant (Yuen Yat Chor) accused of murder from the U.S. to Hong Kong.
Yuen Yat Chor's Luk is really the only compelling character in the whole film and he is unfortunately brushed to the side so that Yen and Khan can bicker like the parents of a precocious child. Luk, as played by Yuen Yat Chor, possesses a likability comparable to that of Jackie Chan, a harmless guy thrown into hazardous situations forced to fight back. Luk would have been a great character on which to center the movie; instead he is used as a plot device to set up the various fights.
And fight they do. There's a joust on motorcycles between Yen and longtime nemesis Michael Woods. Plus, Yen vs. John Salvitti using what can only be described as spaz-fu. Khan has a great deal of kicking to do here as well along with some very scary stunt work on, in, and almost under a speeding ambulance (inspiration for Michelle Yeoh's scene in Supercop?). The extensively doubled Michael Wong even gets into the act. Finally, the marquee match-up is a lengthy, ferocious hand-to-hand battle on top of a building pitting Yen against Woods once more. All the fights are fantastic, tireless Yuen Woo Ping trademark brawls that are expertly executed, but unfortunately when they are performed by near-robots like Yen and Khan, nobody cares. |

| When did it all go wrong!? When did the HK movie industry feel their own movies were lacking in quality and did they decide it would be much better to just cast lame canto-pop singers with a lack of talent for both acting and action; and make Hollywood-style action movies!? It's a shame that a film industry like Hong Kong's can make so many lousy movies the last 6-7 years or so...
These depressive thoughts and many more entered my mind, after I had finished watching this great action movie by Yuen Woo Ping, starring the amazing Donnie Yen. This is the kind of action which HK was known for, was famous for, will forever be associated with...it's action every 5 minutes and it's GREAT! So it's a huge shame that nowadays, these kind of movies don't get made anymore. I don't know exactly who is responsible for this. It might be the HK audience who decided they had enough of brave stuntmen risking their lives on amazing, unbelievable stunts, and of the leads who actually had talent for on-screen action, or it might have been some dumb-ass executives in a high office somewhere on Hong Kong Island, who donŐt know shit about good movies but just think about money and decided movies would make much more cash if they would just make some romantic comedies and CGI-action movies with young pretty people who can barely hold a tone, let alone act.
Ok...on with the review now, cause we pretty much all know about the problems in the HK movie industry nowadays.
It's a blast! Sure, no-one will expect a brilliant story or great acting from this movie. I sure as hell wasn't. There is only ONE reason you should watch this movie; ACTION! It's your basic cops story, which starts off in America, but it quickly moves the story back to Hong Kong. It's about the CIA dealing in some drugs and a innocent chinese guy gets caught up in all of this and thus becomes a target for the CIA. Donnie Yen and Cynthia Khan are also after the guy, because they first think he might belong to the drug-sellers, but they soon find out he was just at the wrong place, at the wrong time; Bummer(!) They soon get help assigned to them in the form of the horrible Michael Wong (famous for having the acting-abilities of a grape-fruit) who soon turns out to be EVIL, and also working for the FBI. Like I said, story isn't that important in this movie...it's all about the action. Let me tell you; It's GREAT. It's inventive, fast and varied. It's the kind of stuff that makes you want you want to be a HK action hero too! We have fights all over the place, we have people jumping from cranes into water, people getting kicked of bikes, bike chases, a fight on top of a driving ambulance, a white guy using some form of CRAZY-FU or whatever (GREAT FIGHT!), a big-ass black guy with a huge body (and a baaaaaaaaad mo-fo-ing moustache), an ugly white chick falling down an elevator shaft and even more. Hell, we even get some sword-fight by Michael Wong(!)
The fight-scenes featuring Donnie Yen are some of the best in HK cinema's history. I haven't seen Tiger Cage 2 yet, which I have been told to have even superior action, but after this movie, it's pretty near the top of my wish-list.
I won't give this a 10 outta 10 or something, cause like I said, it doesn't have a great story or acting, plus it has Mike in it...so that would just be wrong. Action-wise it gets a 9 out of 10 from me, primarily because of the great fights by Donnie and the nice stunts, plus it's fast paced and stuff happens all the time.
Overall, it gets a 8.5/10;It's one of the best HK-style action movies out there and it's a real shame movies like these don't seem to get made anymore. |

High octane actioner starring the ever-watchable Cynthia Khan teaming up with Donnie Yen in an early role. Some incredible fight scenes (most notably Cynthia vs. Ambulance and Donnie vs. Woods). The action is fast, the fights fast AND jaw dropping, the entertainment good. Script? Well, a bit weak--not much character development--but hey, you came for action, right? After viewing all 3 of Cynthia's "In The Line Of Duty" films, I will have to say this is the weakest in terms of story development. One thumbs up on story, one and a half thumbs up on action.-Dresden Liam Moss LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!

| The storyline in this film is so thin, it's almost undetectable! But I don't care! This movie was made to show some action and you get a lot of it!
This is arguably THE classic Hong Kong actioner--no story, no great acting, with characters taking blows that could kill an elephant. Plain looking, but filled with great fighting, great stunts--but most importantly, the action is very original and inventive, nothing like you see in an average Hollywood production.
Highlights of the movie: the ambulance scene, dirt bikes scene, Yen-Woods fight (when Yen makes Woods fall of the roof it looks so natural, unlike a similar scene in "The Protector" where the bad guy was actually waiting a few seconds for Jackie Chan), the whole final showdown, and to me personally, the brief but very impressive fight in the hospital.
There is a slow spot in the movie (just think about it: "A" slow spot!) when they visit Luk's mother, but it was not that bad. I thought the woman playing Luk's mother did a good job in this scene.
Cynthia is lovely and Donnie Yen is VERY fast!
Oh, almost forgot, there is no wire-fu, which I hate!
A must-have! |

It was the best female martial art movie I have ever seen. The fight moves were so unique, exiting and different. I have seen other movies to the serious and I have to say this is the best film in the serious. The beautiful Cynthia Khan stars in this film and I'll have to give her 10 out of 10 for her acting.-RENEE DESILVA LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!

| An excellent martial arts/action/cop movie!
If you're looking for action, there's plenty here. Almost every 5 minutes or so the action of fights, vehical chases, guns, etc. come. It's the unstoppable style. Not forgetting that they are perfectly choreographed by the genius Yuen Wo Ping. The martial art styles in this movie are a mixture of taekwondo, kickboxing, and regular boxing, as well as Chinese kung fu. Now that's what makes it good, all these style incorporated into one movie, including intense fight scenes, good plot, Donnie Yen, fabulous visual quality and slow motion effects etc. There's loads more but I can't talk about everything this great movie has to offer. The best fight scene was of course the Donnie Yen vs Michael Woods scene (it is unique to this film!). What else can I say? It's a classic movie, especially of how well it did in the box office and the extra features on the DVD version. Trust me, all martial artists, action fans, and Donnie Yen fans will be happy! Go get it now! |

Along with "Righting Wrongs," this movie has the best fights I've seen in the "Girls with Guns" genre. This is the first Cynthia Khan movie I saw, and it made an instant believer out of me. Some great fights involving moving vehicles. Donnie Yen is stunning too.-HO LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!
