For his final film, Akira Kurosawa paid tribute to the popular writer and educator Hyakken Uchida, here played by Tatsuo Matsumura. Poignant and elegant, this is an unforgettable farewell from one of the greatest artists the cinema has ever known.
Overview:
The final film by Japan's master filmmaker. From Akira Kurosawa, the highly regarded Japanese director of RAN and DREAMS, comes MADADAYO, a tribute to much-loved professor Hyakken Uchida (Tatsuo Matsumura). In 1943, Uchida announces to his students that he will retire his position to pursue a writing career. Each year the students visit him, throwing annual birthday parties to toast him and thank him for his mentoring. The movie, mixed with themes of fallout from WWII, observes the way that Uchida's relationship with his students grows and matures far beyond the classroom. MADADAYO is a lovely story with a strong message and beautiful imagery.
