John Woo and Chow Yun Fat's second best (after "Hard Boiled") and still one of my favorite Hong Kong movies of all time.

Even though the movie is more of a pseudo-remake of Le "Samourai", in my opinion this is Woo's masterpiece. No holds barred explosive action movie--not to mention this film is extremely violent and brutal. That's usually how I prefer my action films.

After the groundbreaking "A Better Tomorrow", John Woo went a little off track with the spoof-like ABT sequel, and the star studded yet subpar "Just Heroes" (co-directed by Wu Ma). But he was back in business with "The Killer".

This is one of my favourite hit man movies of all time. Chow Yun Fat is too cool for school here. He is like Edward Fox in "Day Of The Jackal" mixed with Alain Delon in "Le Samourai". Suave, cool, professional, but also lonely and disconnected. This is however a two header, with Danny Lee clocking in equal screentime as the hellbent cop--how novel. But in Woo's hands, old Danny boy is able to go beyond his usual screen persona and deliver a more nuanced and emotional cop character, not really seen since "Law With Two Phases". And the chemistry between him and Chow is unmistakable.

One of my favourite characters in this movie is actually that of Chu Kong, as Chow's handler, mentor, and friend. He has a quiet dignity about him but can also go into the melodramatic style without coming off as uneven. And while I loved him as a bad guy in "The Big Heat", I like that he gets to show more range here. Sally Yeh is undoubtedly the weak link. As with every other female character in a John Woo movie, I could never figure out if Woo was just bad at picking leading ladies, or if the poor girls just never had that much to work with. Considering the movies' focus was usually on the male bonding of the leading men.

While John Woo had been making movies since the 70's--comedies, kung fu flicks, etc.--he really found his style with "A Better Tomorrow", but cemented it with this one. The double guns, the white doves, the slo-mo, the Christian imagery, and so on. All of this seems cliché today, due to heavy copying in countless movies. And yet, when you see the real thing in Woo's work, you realize how badly all these subsequent copycats did it. This is where it's at. And sadly, it will never be like this again.

YThis movie still holds up well even after all these years! When friends are over I play this and they say "Cool" often. Intelligent friends :)Cinema!
Y"The Killer" is just phenomenally cool. It may have been imitated and parodied to the point that this is now less clear.Jeffrey Frawley

THE KILLER is one of the best action films ever made, and on top of that the movie acutally has substance. The shootouts in the house and the church are a sight to behold.

Pretty dated in terms of clothes, hair, music, etc. "The Killer" still delivers some incredible over-the-top John Woo-style shoot 'em up action. Bloody.

Very good action flick that stands the test of time. Chow Yun Fat is still cool with both guns blazing simultaneously. A very good actioner with impressive acting and a good plot. Beware, this is NOT a martial arts movie.

This may have been a good movie for its time period, but it is past its prime for current entertainment. I was not impressed at all with the gun play or the acting for that matter. It was just a lot of shooting and that's about it.

NThe movie is amazing. The film is def. a classic, Woo's camera style is impressive, & the story is thrilling, One of the best movies for any action fan.KungfuManiac
NJohn Woo's "The Killer" is a great picture. The story & acting can remain a classic for any generation. There is a lot of impressive shootouts but the story about a hitman w/ a heart is priceless. Try watching it again, it's just not about the action.JV47842

Classic John Woo/Chow Yun Fat film and a must-see. I mean I can't say any more great things about this film that haven't already been said. The lovely Sally Yeh contributes a beautiful song and everyone delivers unforgettable performances. I loved it, you will too, and this film will probably be re-made by someone some day.

This is a great film, and either cut of the film makes a great purchase. I love John Woo gangster pictures, his movies are great and his biggest refrenece in "The Killer" and "A Better Tommorrow" is a French movie called "Le Samourai".

If you have not seen "The Killer", then get it today. Make sure you pick up "Le Samourai" as well because both movies are great! And it really makes a cool experience.

Great, great flick. The action is top-notch, the character development is complete, the pacing is perfect...I could go on. It starts off a little slow, and the ending is very bleak, but as a whole an excellent movie. Highly recommended!

The first John Woo movie I ever saw and it totally blew me away. If you like two-fisted gun shooting action, this film is for you! John Woo's American movies ("Face/Off", "Mission Impossible: 2", etc.) are great, but his Chinese productions are the stuff of legend and instant classics! "The Killer", starring Chow Yun-Fat and Danny Lee, is one of John Woo's best--if not the best! "Hard Boiled" and "A Better Tomorrow", along with "The Killer", are what made Chow Yun-Fat a star! "Crouching Who And Hidden What" cannot compare!

This is John Woo's best film. The way he directs this movie is magnficent and the way the stars shone under Woo's direction has to be seen to be believed. Any fan of action films or Hong Kong cinema in general will love "The Killer".

Along with "A Better Tomorrow" this film made Chow Yun Fat's career, and a very cool one it is. John Woo's Hong Kong career created several great movies ("A Better Tomorrow" (I), "Bullet in the Head," "Hard Boiled" and "The Killer") and several other very interesting ones ("Last Hurrah for Chivalry," "A Better Tomorrow II" and "Once a Thief"), and this certainly belongs in the first category.

(Warning - plot revelation at the end.) This movie is totally action-packed, but also has an interesting story. As the synopsis on the webpage tells it, a professional assassin named Jeff (played by Chow Yun-fat) takes one last job out of remorse for accidentally blinding a singer named Jenny, hoping to get enough money to pay for a cornea transplant. This guilt eventually grows into love, and girl reciprocates, having discovered his soft, gentle side.

Nonetheless, the film also explores themes of honor and loyalty. Jeff's old comrade Sidney attempts to betray him on orders from the big boss, but Jeff spares his life out of friendship, and Sidney later repays this act of mercy many times over, even to death.

Moreover, Jeff runs into two Hong Kong police officers who attempt to arrest him. One of them dies in the line of duty, but the other (played by Danny Lee) grows to respect and even admire Jeff for the sense of honor and compassion that lies beneath the facade of a cool, determined killer. In the final battle against hordes of minions sent by the crime boss, they are trapped in a church but stand side by side, even swapping guns to symbolically demonstrate their new bond of brotherhood and friendship.

I had the sense all along that Jeff was going to die, although I had hoped for a somewhat happy ending with Jenny finally recovering her sight, and this is my one quibble with the film.

Jeff made the cop promise him that if he were to die, he would like to arrange for his corneas to be given to Jenny for transplantation, to do one last decent thing, but sadly Jeff's own eyes get destroyed before he perishes in the final shootout.

The cop ultimately kills the crime boss AFTER the villain surrenders to a battalion of police who arrive on the scene, and the movie ends there.

We never know if Jenny ever makes a recovery, and I suppose the director wanted it that way. None the less, the incredible action sequences, and the interesting documentary in the special features on firearms and tactics, are worth getting this title anyway.

Of all John Woo's movies, this was the first I saw in 1992. It blew me away--I loved the music, the style, the acting, the action, the love story (and I'm not normally into that kind of stuff). No other film of his comes close. (Now I know a lot of people like "Hard Boiled", but it's just excessive to me. "The Killer" has just has the right amount of everything.)

Now I've got to admit I've got two VHS versions and two DVD versions. Some may say I'm a bit biased when it comes to this movie, but it's a must-see. Once watched you'll be addicted and you’ll want to see all of Mr. Woo's HK movies (way better than any of his western movies).

Oh, by the way, if you were going to say what about "Face/Off", visual and style-wise it's a poor man's "The Killer", and even the story is a bit of a rip-off. Enjoy.

A classic!

I didn't think much of chow yun fat, after watching the very, very overrated hidden dragon, crouching tiger. Kung fu isn't Chows trade, GUN FU is his trade! This movie shows what chow is best at.

Chow Yun Fat accidentally blinds a pretty nightclub singer (Sally Yeh) in a gunfight, and thereafter vows to scam the money for her operation. By the end of the movie, just about everyone ends up dead. While some claim John Woo intended a send-up of crime movie clichés, it's more likely that he simply uses the same old arsenal of HK clichés more stylishly than his competition.

This film is quite simply amazing! If you haven't seen it yet, I strongly recommend it. I've been catching up on Woo's earlier films for a few months now, and I've watched "A Better Tomorrow", "Hard Boiled", and this. This is without doubt my favourite of the three. It makes contemporary Hollywood action films look like Bambi. The gunplay, the music, everything is perfect. John Woo is indeed the godfather of the heroic bloodshed genre. Chow however is one of the best dressed players, he refines the assassin look. Woo has this habit of having his two main players act in a strange manner towards one another in his films, it's almost like a love affair. If you enjoyed Woo's 90's flicks like "Face Off" and "MI2", then go and watch this film!!! In my opinion this is Woo's best flick to date.
