| Overview: | Brace yourself for a sobering account of a historical atrocity. In 1937, untold hundreds of thousands were raped, tortured, and massacred by Japanese soldiers in the Chinese city of Nanking. The filmmakers tell the story through the fictional experiences of one family. Shing Yin is a Chinese doctor married to a Japanese woman, Shu Qin. They flee from Shanghai when that city falls to Japan and return to the doctor's hometown, accompanied by their two children. But they face unimaginable horrors in Nanking as the Japanese attack the city. Music by Tan Dun (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon)
