 | | | | I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Made me a Stephen Chow fan for life. While its purpose was to appeal to all audiences, it does it in such a way that it's charming and not insulting. Sometimes when films go for international appeal they have a tendency to be formulaic, as if the filmmaking is saying, "I'm only doing it this way because if I don't then you won't understand it and you won't give me your money." Chow made a genuinely great movie. It always brightens up my day. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | Fun take on classic Kung-Fu. Chow, taking Kung-Fu Hustle into account, really seems to love these type of unique takes on martial arts. As a fan of both martial arts and soccer, this film really had it all and I defy you to not be cheering the film by the end. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | The best comedy films ever! Stephen Chow is a genius! His perfect blend of quick humor (I mean laugh out loud humor), action, and fantasy, is extraordinary!
The cast was great as well! Stephan Chow is an awesome writer as well as actor, especially in his bailiwick: comedy. Vicky Zhao Wei is so beautiful, and her transformation in this movie was excellent, from being shy and having skin problems, to her usual beautiful self (minus her hair as a monk).
I'd sum it up simply: It's lady bugs meets Dragonball Z, minus all the little ladies, of course. Soccerballs transformed into fireballs, that fly fast and true all the way across the field... gravity defying leaps... this movie is stellar!
This is by far one of the funniest, exciting movies I have ever seen! What's sad is that it was poorly promoted when it debutted in American theaters.
I say 5 out of 5! | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | I can tell you that this movie was awesome. The plot was a perfect combination between Soccer and Shaolin Kung Fu. The story was extremely funny, the brothers were hilarious--outstanding each of them. Stephen did a very good job as a director and screenwriter. I'm sure this is one of Stephen's best movies ever. It also brings me back to his old comedy in the 90's. I don't think I would like Shaolin Soccer in US version though, which is cut over 30 minutes from the original version...anyway, I highly recommend this movie...well done Sing goh!!! | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | I think this movie is great. It's full of humor. Although the story is not really good, the way the actors and actresses act really can make us laugh. I think even if I have to see it many times I won't get bored. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | It's a very entertaining film with plenty of laughs, opening new doors to the use of special effects for stunts. The last half of the film keeps you glued to the screen. Looking forward to a part 2 on this one. Well done. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | Top-notch comedy, even by Stephen Chow standards. Right up there with "God of Cookery". I loved the "Saving Private Ryan" style parody during the soccer game, that was a laugh-out-loud moment. If you've never seen a Stephen Chow movie, do yourself a favor and pick up "Shaolin Soccer" and "God of Cookery." | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | When I first heard about this movie, I was a bit skeptic, but I went for it since I love stupid kung fu movies. The result: 100% pure laughter so explosive my belly shook for most of the movie, and tears leaked blissfully from my eyes. Get it now! | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | Stephen Chow's best film ever!!! There should be a warning label on this film, as it is so hilarious you might have trouble breathing. Prepare to laugh till you drop. Buy it now before Miramax butchers it for American release. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | First of all, I thought this was a great movie. It is one of the funniest Steven Chow movies I ever saw. It was also Hong Kong's top-grossing movie of 2001. Steven Chow I think is more mature in this movie because he is getting older but he is still funny. Monks using Shaolin fighting to play soccer--lol--what's gonna' be next? The computer graphics on this movie are awesome and so is the camera work. This is one of the movies that you would watch 3 times in one day and not get bored of it. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | I might be the only one that didn't like this movie a great deal. Maybe it's because I'm Vietnamese, and I don't get any hidden jokes or culture. But, I found this movie a tad bit boring. Nevertheless, it was entertaining though, once they started playing soccer!! | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

| THE MOVIE: Overall this was a very funny movie. I've been lamenting quite a while over Stephen Chow's last couple year's of movies. It just seems he's lost his touch from the movies that really made me love his comedy (Saint of Gamblers, Royal Tramp, Tricky Brains, etc.) I haven't found any of his latest movies to be very funny at all. So I was glad to find this movie brought back some of his old school laughs. But be warned, the entire first half of the movie, except for a few choice moments, is really disjointed, random, and just boring. But, from the moment when they finally form their full soccer team, it gets HILARIOUS! And the action gets very cool. Yes it's way way over the top action that only HK cinema can provide, but taking into account that it's supposed to be silly, it's really very enjoyable. Be warned though, although this movie features the most "modern" use of computer graphics I've seen in a HK movie, many of the effects are very poorly done & look obviously fake in comparison to the much more polished & higher budget stuff we're used to seeing in US cinemas. In many scenes the special effects look more like hand drawn cartoons than computer shaded models. But once again, for a HK movie this is still really good & since the movie isn't trying to be super realistic or serious, the shortcomings of some of the effects can be easily overlooked & don't get in the way of enjoying the movie. From the middle of the movie on, there won't be more than a few minutes when you're not laughing or at the very least being very entertained.
VIDEO QUALITY: Not half bad for a HK DVD, anamorphic widescreen, though the menus aren't. Image is pretty good, though in general it's just a little too soft & grainy. At no point is the video good enough to really jump off the screen at you, but it's never that bad that it distracts you. Colors are rendered fairly well, but flesh tones can vary wildly from one scene to another. When the DVD first enters it's menu it plays this 20 second long clip from the movie. This is kinda' cool the first time, but gets really annoying when you have to sit thru this 20 sec clip every single time you switch from any one category of the menu to another. Also, being the "special edition" it doesn't actually have any extra movie footage, it just adds behind the scenes footage. It's kinda' like the white rabbit feature in the Matrix, when you see the white rabbit icon, click "enter" and it'll take you to a short making of documentary about that scene. But in this movie, you can't control whether the icon appears or not, it always appears and it gets kinda' annoying. But other than those fairly minor complaints, the video is quite acceptable.
SOUND QUALITY: First of all, let me say that the DTS soundtrack is for the Cantonese soundtrack only, the Mandarin one is in DD 5.1 & is a pretty decent mix, with really heavy bass on multiple occasions & decent use of surrounds. Probably among the most notably decent sound mixes I've heard from a HK movie. At certain points in the movie when the deep bass hits, it really hits your subwoofer, but at certain times it seems the sound crew got a little bass happy and cranked the bass level overboard, with certain scenes having excessively boomy & sloppy bass. But I guess better to have more bass than not enough.
FINAL WORD: Don't let the first half of the movie prevent you from sitting through the whole thing, it really gets better from the second half on. All in all, a very enjoyable movie, with very decent video & above average sound. It's good to see Stephen Chow getting funny again. |
