Distributor: Universe

Chapters: 8

Picture: Letterboxed at 1.85:1. Superb quality with nice bright and vibrant colours that contain excellent detail levels. Absolutely no noticeable marks or scratches are present and it handles all lighting conditions properly. The one minor moan is that each time you access the main menu you must sit through the opening clip which soon becomes very tedious. Other than that, this is one of the best from the HK market.

Sound: Cantonese DD 5.1 and DTS tracks as well as a Mandarin DD 5.1 dub. Removable Chinese (traditional & simplified) and English subtitles are available.

Trailers: Only the short trailer for the film itself is supplied.

Extras: These include a 'making of' documentary, outtakes, photo gallery, extended scenes (see notes below) and special effects featurette. Oddly enough the interviews with Chow Sing Chi look like they were taken from computer video formats as they contain muffled sound and poor picture quality. Overall, it's a nice disc with top film quality but some ideas should have been thought through properly.

Notes: Two versions of this film were originally shown in cinemas, one of which contained two extended scenes. These are included on the disc in the form of a small white footballer logo appearing in the top right hand corner which you can select to view the extra footage at the appropriate time. You are also able to view behind-the-scenes special effects footage when a yellow footballer logo appears. Great idea but you cannot watch the film without these logos or choose to see the film with the extended scenes blended in automatically.

A very clean 1:85:1 anamorphic print but you'd expect that for a film made just a year ago. One complaint though, is a very noticeable white mark, at the 1:14:50 mark of the main feature. Go frame by frame and you'll see what I mean. A great big HUGE splodge of what seems to be pigeon poop but that's me being a little fussy though.

Included are cantonese Dolby Digital 2.0, 5.1, DTS 5.1 audio tracks plus a mandarin 5.1 dub. I only listened to the 2.0 track, and it's very clear. No hissing, clear dialogue, great. I didn't really listen to the other tracks, mainly becase I don't own a Dolby Digital or a DTS amplifier.

The english subtitles are great, clear, no spelling mistakes, not many grammar errors, wonderful all around. They are a little dumbed down though. Also included are traditional and simplified chinese subtitles.

Note that three extra scenes are available through a 'follow the white rabbit'-feature that can be activated via the Special Version option on the main menu. When a white symbol appears you can view an extended scene showing a fairly elaborate dance routine, a big scene for Mun after her make over and finally an NG-reel that appears before the end credits.

Extras include a 20 minute 'Making Of', (with english subtitles), and it provided a truly useful view on how the film was done. NG Footage is just the outtake footage in the main feature without english subtitles. There's also a short featurette showing before and after shots regarding the many CG effects. The Stars files for Ng Man Tat, Stephen Chow and Zhou Mei are the usual crap you get and the photo gallery is just a few high resulotion pictures from the film.

TECH NOTES:
Universe DVD - This edition is a real treat for collectors. In addition to a crisp anamorphic widescreen 1.85:1 video transfer and the option of clear Dolby Digital Stereo or Surround sound, Universe has packaged a number of nice extras into a slick interface. Most notable is the appearance of a small orange or white logo in the upper right-hand corner during several scenes scattered throughout the film. Hit "enter" on your remote when they appear and you'll either see one of two deleted scenes which are definitely worth watching, one of several special effects before-and-after shots, or outtakes. Also, all the extras including the documentary include English subtitles.
