 | | | | Stunning visual experience, some people may have problems with several drastical scenes. Did not like the end too much--this is the half star missing--overall highly recommended! | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | Powerful little bitter pill of a movie. Not as exquisite as "Spring, Summer..." or "3-Iron", but powerful nonetheless. Kim Ki-Duk rehashes many of the ideas/symbols in this in later movies to better effect (floating houses, silent characters, etc). Seems like it is almost a mine, or a grab bag, from which he built his later movies. I saw this one last, so it's hard to not be reminded of his other films every five minutes, but...yeah I loved it. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

| Simply put this movie is incredible. It's the kind of film that's so beautifully made that it could easily be right at the top of any grade-a Hollywood film. The acting, direction, locations, cinematography, character development, script, etc., are just amazing. This film is what you'd come up with if you crossed "Gone With The Wind", "Somewhere In Time", and "Audition". And here's why: the shooting of the film is so tasteful that it could easily be compared to that of "Gone With The Wind". The director and cinematographer both have an eye for beautiful landscapes that come across as dream sequences, like in the angle, location and lighting of the shot. The acting, script and character development comes across so clear and strong that the viewer can't help but relate to both of the main characters in the film. The writing is so well done that the one watching can't help but think of such other great films of the trade such as "Somewhere In Time". And, last but not least, the Takashi Miike influence ("Audition"): there's paralyzing black (sick) humor in the film as well as unnerving acts of both self and animal cruelty. Miike never has strayed into animal cruelty, but as for the strong acts of mutilation on one's own person as well as story, that's where I draw the similarities. I really just can't say enough good things about this film. If you want to see a film that's as good as any Hollywood classic but instead shows you the ugly underbelly of life instead of the beautiful, then this film is definitely for you. |
