| In my opinion, Portland Street Blues is an excellent film; one of the best dramas to ever come out of Hong Kong. I've read reviews trashing this movie for the flashback sequences and for the music. I had no problem with the way the story is composed and honestly REALLY enjoyed the dynamic canto-pop musical score. This is a semi-artsy film, which paints beautifully rendered images of its characters. Especially for Westerners who really have no clue how the Chinese underworld functions, this is an intriguing and very entertaining movie. It tackles some pretty tough stereotypes, dealing with gender and sexuality issues in addition to the consequences of crime and drugs. Yet, I felt it was balanced and seamlessly integrated everything into one cohesive picture. |
