A smart action flick. Great chemistry between the male and female lead actors.

"Crying Freeman" is an incredibly hard to find cult film based on the popular anime.

The acting in this picture varies. I thought Yoko Shimada gave the best performance. Mark was able to act well, but his dialogue sounded rehearsed. Normally, I enjoy Byron Mann, but I felt this part was not his type. Christopher Gans’ direction is the true gem in this film. The plot is a little corny, but otherwise enjoyable. Most of the action sequences are brief or gun fights. The last few action sequences are good. The finale is enjoyable, but the martial arts isn’t quite as polished as one would expect.

This is a B movie that is beautifully stylized by Christopher Gans’ direction. Get whatever copy you can because most of the film's original language is actually in English.

Oh I wanted to like this more... I am a Mark Dacascos fan, but converting Western comic books into film can be tricky. Translating manga into a Hollywood movie can be near impossible to do well. "Crying Freeman" very earnestly tries to bring the original manga to life but doesn't live up to its potential.

As other reviewers have said, get a copy of "Drive" or "Brotherhood of the Wolf" if you are a Mark Dacascos fan.

YI wanted to like this too being an admirer of the Manga series. The film fails, it has clever director Christopher Gans style. But Dacascos skills were not showcased well. The movie is an upset & has built a weird fan base that I will never understand.JV47842

Mark Dacascos plays the elusive assassin in Christopher Gans's live-action feature remake, based on the Japanese manga novel and anime series, Crying Freeman.

Fans of the franchise will love what Gans brings to the screen, with beautiful visual and artistic concept and execution, combined with a hypnotically resounding score to orchestrate the film's theme. Co-stars Rae Dawn Chong, Byron Mann, Tchéky Karyo, Masaya Kato, Julie Condra and Yôko Shimada all do wonderful jobs in bringing the story of Crying Freeman to life, to the best of their ability.

The action is adequately entertaining, although it does not necessarily do much justice for Hong Kong action fans, particularly, fans of the film, Drive: Director's Cut, which has ten times more electrifying action sequences with a higher standard for martial arts action set by the film's stunt team, Alpha Stunts.

Many of the film's fight scenes are shot in grandiose slow motion camerawork, which may put a damper on the expectations of those who have been around to see the crossover of Hong Kong action into the US; In which case, unless you're a fan of the franchise, the two modest sex scenes in the film should keep even the most jaded viewer awake for the film's duration ;-).

All in all, Crying Freeman is essentially an "art" action film, which has made its mark in martial arts cinema history; For modest and hardcore fans only.

OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS: "Xavier Gens's 'Hitman'", "Equilibrium", "Brotherhood Of The Wolf", "Naked Weapon", "Naked Killer", "Shadow Fury", "City Hunter", "Guyver: Dark Hero", "Fist Of The North Star", "Blade", "Blade 2", "The Ultimate Target", "The Princess Blade", "Legend Of The Wolf", "Drive: Director's Cut", "Soldier", "Black Mask", "Kill Bill", "LoveDeath", "Ryû ga gotoku: gekijô-ban (a.k.a. Like A Dragon)", and the upcoming action thriller, "Broken Path", starring Johnny Yong Bosch and directed by Koichi Sakamoto.

NThis is the best film adaptation of the "Crying Freeman" manga. Unfortunately that's not saying much: The others are quite bad.Jeffrey Frawley
YExcellent review of this movie. I couldn't have said it better myself! "art action-drama" is how I'd classify this movie. Great effort for a low budget. Falls short in a few places as mentioned in the review.YoMama

Stylish adaptation of the original manga comic. A bit over the top (and a lot of implausible action) but it looks great and furthermore, it sounds great. The soundtrack by Patrick O'Hearn is one of my all time favorites and it's the main reason for me to enjoy this movie.

I'm not familiar with the anime, but I've been a fan of Mark Dacascos since I watched "Only The Strong" back in the early 90's. I've tried to make an effort to keep up-to-date with all his films. This is surprisngly one of the few that managed to slip through the cracks. A lot of the DVDs were OOP but I finally found a legit edition courtesy of HKFlix.com. Thanks

Anyhow, this film met my expectations and I think this movie was released in the right era. Early 90's. If released today the stunts would be way too fake with excessive usages of "wirefu".

I'm interested in seeing what Christophe Gans will release in the future.

I like this one only because I saw the cartoon version and the cartoon one was decent. I like the action and story fine, but it was a bit slow-paced and boring at times. But it's cleaver nonetheless.

Not nearly as bad as HKFlix's reviewer states, but not nearly as good as some others state, either. When matching this film against "Drive", "Crying Freeman" will lose every time. When taken as a separate movie with ties to its manga series, it isn't a bad film, just not as exciting as it could have been.

YThis is accurate. The film is a very modest success, and certainly no more.Jeffrey Frawley
YNot all of us at HKFLIX think this is a terrible movie. But against Drive? Yes, you're right. CF will lose every time.YoMama

The movie tries to capture the spirit of the original manga series (several shots come directly from the comic) but it just lacks the passion. Mark Dacascos simply doesn't have the charisma that Freeman possesses in the comic (Freeman is supposed to be the most drop dead gorgeous Asian male o the planet).

This film is awesome. Don't pay attention to [others' negative opinions] of this film. It is awesome to look at. The story pacing is great. The fight scenes are freaking awesome. If you liked the visual and story pacing of "Brotherhood of the Wolf" then see this. It was directed by the same guy and it has style and action to spare.

This movie was SO cool. I liked no, LOVED IT. I've only seen part of the anime so I can't say if it's better, but it's a REALLY good movie, worth buying. Mark was great as Freeman.

I thought the film stayed true to the anime. If you have seen the anime you would like this. But on the real the anime was better. The action was great! But the actors were weak. Besides that, the movie was alright!
