Very trippy and bizarre film that begins as a standard (and outlandish) slasher film, and ventures into far stranger territory. Performances are generally good, and the set design and locations used are mainly effective and disturbing. The film tends to be quite brutal, and unflinching in its portrayal of gore and sexual violence. 4/5

I was told by a friend that this was a good movie, so I decided to buy it. I was very disappointed in the movie. I figured it was going to be gruesome and horrifying, but it was neither. It was a boring movie and a waste of money. This movie lacked creeps, terror and gore. It reminded me of all the new "horror" teeny-bopper films you see in the movie theaters.

Beautiful grotesquery.

A VERY difficult to take film, one must have a strong constitution but if you do you will be rewarded. It is an intelligently brutal film. It doesn't just provide senseless gore (although there is plenty of it) it creates brutality in its situations. It's a film that wont let you go..it stayed with me for days afterward.

Japanese Take On The American Mad Slasher Genre.

A cross between THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, FRIDAY THE 13TH, and THE X-FILES (with a pinch of PSYCHO thrown in for flavoring), it's a great improvement over the later American versions in this genre that...no pun intended...have lost their edge. This film, which I saw at home on DVD, held my interest throughout. When I thought that the tension couldn't grow anymore, I was surprised to note that I was only halfway into the movie. And, although the ending is telegraphed early into the film, it has an unusual style that wouldn't let me look away.

The film is unusually graphic. I was reminded of some of the Fulgi excesses (such as ZOMBIE). Yet, those scenes certainly add to the overall impact of the film.

Redeeming points count: few.

This movie is pretty hokey, to cut to the chase. There's some genuinely creepy stuff to be found here, namely the opening scene. It involves some pretty graphic torture and mutilation that is pretty squirm inducing but other than that, this movie's rep as a cult classic is somewhat questionable. The acting is pretty weak and the special effects that can be found are passable at best. This flick rips off many classic horror flicks and upon watching it, you're bound to spot many not-so-subtle homages. Lower your expectations and you might enjoy it more than I did. *1/2 out of *****

Shocking Saki.

This film is probably one of the most strange and brutal films you will ever see, beginning as a rip-off of Argento's set pieces and ending with a resolution that is very "Japanese monster". There is no simple explanation for the slayings, but rather a sort of psychic menace that we have never seen quite like this before.

Although the concept is unusual, it's really a highly derivative hybrid. You can trace the major plot elements of this film to "Evil Dead", "Friday the 13th", "Suspiria", "Carrie" and even "Basket Case". However, the sheer desire to shock and repulse that runs throughout the film makes for a harrowing experience. The fact that the film is in Japanese with subtitles only adds to the claustrophobic atmosphere. Blatant teaser: this film contains one of the most horrific machete killings ever recorded on film.

Now before you ask THAT question, this is NOT associated with the American cult favorite SAM RAIMI / BRUCE CAMBPELL horror classics. This is a pretty whacked Japanese horror movie of evil monster fetuses with bad attitudes that like to murder people in very nifty ways. Written by "provocative subject matter" maestro, TAKASHI ISHII (of FREEZE ME and GONIN fame) and directed by TOSHIHARU IKEDA, I have to say that it's not a really outstanding movie by any means and, in my opinion, didn't live up to the hype I had long heard about it (I've read that it's sequel is much better, we can only hope). Honestly, I just kept feeling like I was watching a homage to an older Italian slasher flick, especially with the ARGENTO stalker-styled murders and the (Italian horror soundtrack band) GOBLIN-esque musical soundtrack pumping in at the action sequences. Who knows, maybe that was their goal to begin with. And if it was, well, they certainly got it right. So if you've ever seen any of spaghetti-land based DARIO ARGENTO's impressive horror movies, then you'll know exactly what the impression is that I'm probably referring to. And if you're a fan of his movies (me personally, I can take 'em or leave 'em, I prefer splat-master LUCIO FULCI myself), then you positively can't go wrong here. As for the story itself, it's about a woman reporter who investigates the origins of a snuff tape that was sent to her by an unknown source. She gathers a group of her colleagues and away they go to an old industrial warehouse area where they start to get killed one by one until she finally figures out the real truth that's tainted with supernatural forces. Now don't get me wrong, it doesn't sound that bad (it's really not either) but maybe I was expecting something totally different I guess? Or the "word on the street" hooked me, I don't really know for sure but I will say that in it's favor (being a Japanese AV Idol collector), I just kept thinking that there's just something strangely familiar about the girls (well, better worded, about their sex scenes anyway) in this flick. And as I would come find out later, most of them that had sex in the film (whether it was a love-making scene or a mock rape) were actual AV Idol Porn stars (from the REAL business that is). WOW! Beautiful Japanese porn stars in a horror movie getting naked, actually trying to act, and getting "offed" in glorious deep red ways... well hell, forget about everything else that I said, this makes it worth the money right there!

A very frightening and gory film with lots of stylish moments. There is a rape scene near the middle of the movie that most Occidentals will probably find very uncomfortable (I did). Overall though this is a terrific horror film and miles beyond any American "slasher" attempt.

Nami hosts a late night home video program. She receives a tape which appears to be a real snuff film. She and her crew investigate the location where she meets a man looking for his brother who warns her to stay away. As she gets closer to the truth, she and her friends are subjected to a brutal nightmare.
