I bought this DVD, along with Guts of a Beauty, based on reviews I'd read that made them both sound so over the top, gory, and exploitive, that I just HAD to see what all the fuss was about. I found them both so boring that I find writing my impressions of them even more boring. Believe it or not, I threw them both in the trash. (I've since stopped this psychotic behaviour, and now keep all DVDs I buy, no matter how awful). In fact, do you know what? I'm just going to cut and paste this opening for the review for Guts of a Beauty so I can move on to a more interesting review.

In Guts of a Virgin, some guys and gals hole up in a cabin in the woods and fool around, wrestle in their underwear, masturbate with severed limbs, and get murdered, or raped and murdered, by a muddy monster who looks suspiciously like a muddy human being. See, it sounds pretty cool, right?

It ain't.

I better add more. Like I said, a read a number of reviews before I ordered Guts of a Virgin from my favorite online supplier, and I have to tell you that it seems apparent that there is a strong fan base for this film. So, it may very well be right up your alley. I personally found the horror not very scary, the humour not that funny, the erotica not that erotic, and (I must be jaded) the weirdness not all that weird. I was completely bored.

If you think you might like this on some kind of campy level, or if you haven't seen a lot of weird Asian cinema, this may just float your boat. I suggest you rent before you buy, or check out the hkflix.com link above for more information. Believe me, I wanted to like this movie. I like weird, shocking, gory, violent movies. I just didn't think this was one of them. That's all.

DO NOT BUY THIS FILM IF: You pretty much agree with my reviews of movies that you have seen; you read all the other reviews that praise this film, but choose to trust me instead for whatever reason; or you just don't feel like it.

RECOMMENDATION: It's obvious to me that Guts of a Virgin appeals to a lot of people for some reason. I recommend this film for those people. Are you one of those people? How should I know?

The story involves a group of folk whom on returning from a fashion shoot get lost in the fog and decide to spend the night in an old house they come across in the woods. What they don't realize though is that en route in the fog they accidentally knocked down the local swamp monster, and he wants revenge!!

Scooby Doo this ain't in this rollicking ride of pervy graphic sex and ultra-gory violence. Whilst 'Beauty' was entertaining in a more straight faced manner, 'Virgin' blows any sensibilities right out the window and goes for the 'who cares' - it's all fun' attitude that's more than welcome in the scene these days.

Having never seen this film before (and not knowing what to expect) I was glued to the screen for it's 70 odd minutes running time, both stunned and amazed by what was rolling out before me. I'd love to mention some of the memorable scenes, but I'd hate to ruin the first time viewers (virgins - ahem) entertainment. Take it from me though, you'll love it!!

Needless to say, the acting is solid stuff and the direction is spot on throughout. And as we pointed out with Guts of a Beauty, there has been some comment regarding a couple of points in the film where there is some fogging over genitalia/penetration shots and yeah, it is slightly annoying but in no way detracts from your enjoyment of the film (unless you are complete nutter watching this gem with your dick in your hand!!) The (limited) use of fogging seems bizarre anyway considering the VERY extreme and VERY graphic nature of the rest of the film.

Like it's counterpart release 'Beauty', the disc itself contains a delightful print of the film with nicely done subtitles in both English and German. The disc also includes trailers for the rest of Japan Shock's current DVD output and when you check this line up out you'll know where all your money will be going with future purchases (Beautiful Girl Hunter and the Evil Dead Trap films look great!)

As far as films go, 'Guts of a Virgin' is a absolute classic that fans of sex gore and mutants should pick up straight away. Well done Japan Shock - keep 'em coming!!!
