 | | | | A Better Tomorrow 2 (see film details) Action/Adventure / Bullet Ballet Woo is back, and so is Chow Yun-fat. Yeah, he pulled "I have a twin brother living in _______" routine.
In this sequel, Ho (Ti Lung) initially refuses to go undercover to bust the gang he used to work for in exchange for his release from prison, he only accepts after his little brother, the policeman Kit (Leslie Cheung) accepts the assignment.
Meanwhile in New York, Ken Gor (Chow Yun-Fat), the twin brother of Mark Gor from the 1st movie, shelters the boss of the gang, who has had to flee after it is taken over by a more aggressive leadership.
Very much like the first ABT, but there's alot less talk and a lot more gun-play. Some the shoot outs are down right poetic, the part with Chow Yun-Fat getting attacked in his apartment and him just casually walking blowing away guys, sending one down a hallway from a shotgun blast, and taking out a guy while sliding down a staircase on his back. Its friggin' awesome.
In ABT, the end battle was cool, but the one here is stupendous. Chow, Ti, and Leslie invade the bad guys house and lay waste to everyone. They use grenades, gas, guns and a sword!
Both Chow and John prove that they are the ultimate action troupe with this movie. Action fans owe it to themselves to get this movie. |

 | | | | A Better Tomorrow (see film details) Action/Adventure / Bullet Ballet Yeah, John Woo. The same guy who directed The Killer, Hard Boiled and MI:2. He must really like Chow Yun-Fat cuz he's like in almost all of his movies.
This story is the tale of two brothers: one a successful counterfeiter and the younger a fledgling graduate of the HK police academy.
The main focus revolves around the split when the younger brother learns the other is a criminal and the efforts of the criminal brother to reform. Along the way are plenty of heists, double-crosses, and shoot outs.
One thing is for certain if you are gonna see a John Woo film; Guys with lots of guns blowing away other guys with lots of guns.
It was really weird seeing Chow Yun-Fat in this, he looked so young and he has beaver teeth! (Hehe), but he seems at his element here.
If there's one thing that pisses me off about HK cinema is the ratio between action and talking. For this movie there's like 5 minutes of action for every 20 of talking, I'm exaggerating of course, but that's what it feels like. But at least with John Woo, you are guaranteed a good action movie and he delivers here.
Probably one of coolest scenes is when Chow Yun-Fat gets killed, yep he dies. He gets a nice juicy bullet to the head, followed by 40 plus to the body. |

 | | | | Black Mask (see film details) Action/Adventure / Science Fiction NOTE: This review refers to the USA version of this film.
A former test subject of a project that created super-soldiers, is forced to escape with his comrades after the project was cancelled. As far has he knew, he was the only one to make it out alive. After escaping he is tries to have a quiet life as a librarian with a tough cop as his best friend.
However, a vicious string of gangland murders on drug bosses, has all the markings of his former companions who seem to have turned to violent crime. Realizing that the police are helpless to fight these soldiers, he decides to take them on himself.
Donning a mask to protect his identity, he must fight these allies turned supervillians as the mysterious superhero known only as Black Mask.
I found Black Mask to be a pretty ridiculous movie, but that maybe due to the crappy american version I have. I have it on tape so I can't even switch over to a subtitled version of the movie.
One thing I find extremely funny is that the cops give a crap that someone is killing all the drug bosses. I'd be quite happy if someone was whacking them, less work for you. Oh well.
There are only really 2 reasons to watch this movie:
1) Hot babes - Francios Yip in the S&M gear and Karen Mok as the dimwitted librarian, who Black Mask saves and keeps captive in his secret lair!!
2) Over the top fighting - Black Mask explodes in wire fu department. The beginning sequence alone as more wire-fu then all of Jets movies put together!
Black Mask is just a standard fare action movie. Great if you are in the mood for mindless action. |

 | | | | Drunken Master 2 (see film details) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure NOTE: This review refers to the dubbed USA version of this film.
The sequel to 1978's DRUNKEN MASTER, it once again features the amazing talents of Jackie Chan. He reprises the role of Wong Fei-Hung, who must out-smart his father and Euro-thugs in the streets of Hong Kong in order to rescue stolen Chinese artifacts.
I prefer seeing Jackie do period pieces over the police dramas he does, there's just something about seeing to guys go blazingly fast with swords and punches.
One thing that I love about Jackie's films that that he hardly ever uses wire-fu. I think DM2 was the only time I've ever seen him use it, whenever he uses a powerful kick or punch.
If I remember right, the end fight of the movie, Jackie fought his own bodyguard. Man, could this guy kick! Lighting fast kicks, nothing but blurs beneath the waste!
DM2 has some of Jackie's best fight scenes ever. Unfortunately, if you live in NorthAm, all you get is the cut dubbed version of DM2. While good in its own right, fast paced, you miss quite a bit. |

 | | | | 2002 (see film details) Action/Adventure / Ghost
2002 - a special unit in the police force's SPI (Spirit and Paranormal Investigation) division designated solely to investigate supernatural activities.
The unit is a man-ghost team consisting of Chiu, a psychic, and Sam, a ghost stick in limbo who's lending his powers for the good of humanity.
However, the duo part ways because it's Sam's time to reincarnate and a new man has been chosen to take his place.
Unfortunately Chius next partner also means that one of them will have to die because 2002 can only have Human-Ghost teams, not Human-Human teams. So who will dies? Chiu or his new partner? Only time can tell.
This was a great movie! Forget the negative reviews you hear. I promise, 2002 is a great thrill ride. It's like watching the Matrix and Ghostbusters, but cooler!
Nicholas Tse, who plays Chiu, is friggin' awesome. He oozes coolness. He carries himslef so well. Big things are coming his ways, if they already haven't.
Since this deals with ghosts there is quite abit of CGI, but it all works really well!! There's parts in the movie with Chiu can make the ghosts solid with Vision Drops, and the fights are breathtaking. People are flying all over the place, glass is being broken, walls are crumbling and fisting are a blur.
Tse doesn't look like a natural kung fu artist but he certainly acts like it.
The chemistry between Tse and Stephen Fung (he becomes his new partner) is great. Like old buddies. The play off of each other well. Especially when Fung sees his first ghost and his legs go limp. Great dialogue.
I really wish I bought this on DVD instaed of VCD. This is just a great movie. Even the love story in it is good. |

 | | | | A Man Called Hero [HK Special Cut] (see film details) Action/Adventure / Swordplay/Sword(s) The story opens in 1914, with Hero Hua being accepted as a student by Master Pride, soon to be the leader of the Martial Society. As Hero returns home, he finds that his family has been murdered by westerners.
Hero tracks down the his parents murderers and extracts revenge on them. But this cause Hero to become a wanted man in his homeland so he flees to America, leaving behind his Wife Jade and his friend Sheng Lo.
The film jumps forward to 1930 as Sheng Ho arrives in New York with Hero's son, Sword. Searching New York for his Father, Sword finds Luohan, a monk who sailed to American with Hero.
Luohan retells the story of how he and Hero became friends and endured the hardships of working in a mining camp called Steel Blue Canyon, which happens to be owned by the same company that had been involved with the murder of Hero's family.
When two of the company's foremen are found dead, another foreman, Bigot captures Hero and tortures him by burying him alive in the ground. Luohan tries to free Hero but gets attacked by the other foremen.
Suddenly, Hero's clan brother, Shadow appears. He frees Hero and together they both disappear. Luohan flees and disappears into New York's Chinatown.
Sheng Lo continues the tale, telling Storm of the day that his Mother and himself came to New York to find Hero. Their reunion is happy and sweet, with Hero finding out that his wife is pregnant with twins.
The story is then continued by Shadow. Shadow had come to bring Hero home because of a threat against their Teacher, Master Pride.
The rivalry between the two clans comes to a head when, after the death Master Pride, Hero must now fight with the Japanese Master, Invincible to see who will become the new holder of the China Secret.
I know the plot description here seems really really confusing, but when you watch the movie its not that confusing.
The one thing I noticed off the back when watching this movie is that it looks beautiful. The opening scenes take place in China with snow falling to the ground, it looks like a dream.
I've read a lot of reviews of people complaining about the lack of fighting in MCH, and that there's to much talking. I think there's a prefect blend in here. The fighting in MCH takes the backstage to allow the story of a Son searching for his father to take center stage. And its a good story.
One thing I'm not liking about the modern HK movies is the CGI fighting. Yes, it looks cool and all but its not right! It just isn't.
One thing I have to comment on is the end fight. It rocked! This fight is what the Statue of Liberty fight in X-Men should have been. 2 guys with super-powers blowing stuff up!
Any ways, Man Called Hero is a great movie. Way better then Storm Riders (MCH is supposedly a sequel to SR) The cinematographer alone should make you want to watch it. |

 | | | | Tokyo Raiders (see film details) Action/Adventure / Comedy I have a couple of guilty pleasures in life, Godzilla and Hong Kong action movies.
Macy defies her powerful Hong Kong investment banker father by eloping with her Japanese beau, Takahashi to Las Vegas.
Unfortunately, Takahashi doesn't show up. When Macy returns to Hong Kong to look for him, she crosses paths with an interior decorator named Yung , who is also trying to track down Takahashi over a bounced check.
Together, they head to Tokyo to track down the wayward groom, where they have an unexpected run-in with local yakuza boss Ito and his henchman. Luckily, Yung happens to be a master of kung-fu and is able to keep Ito's men at bay long enough for them to be rescued by a private detective named Lam.
Aided by a quartet of the Chinese "Charlie's Angels", Lam is also on the lookout for Takahashi. Together, they embark on joint effort to unravel the complicated trail left in the wake of Takahashi's disappearance, one that soon involves the yakuza and some international espionage.
This was a great movie. The beginning alone, made up for the rental fee. The first 10 minutes is straight fighting.
But like all HK movies, they suffer from 10 minutes of awesome fighting then 20 of boring talk and plot advancement, Tokyo Raiders was able to lower the talk/plot advancement down to 10 minutes, which made the movie fly by.
Most video stores won't get in HK movies cause there's little market for them over here, but lately they've been coming in by boatfuls, and Tokyo Raiders is on the best I've seen so far. |

 | | | | Time And Tide (see film details) Triad / Action/Adventure A young man, unhappy with his present job, becomes a bodyguard to score some quick cash. He soon befriends a once disillusioned mercenary, Tyler, who has come back to Hong Kong to get married and start a new life.
But all is not well when Tyler's father-in-law becomes the target of an assassination by a group of killers that Tyler, himself, knows.
Although the two men find themselves working together to stop the assassination plot, they are soon thrust forward toward opposite sides of a deadly confrontation.
What started off as a slow, monotonous movie ended up as a righteous action packed gunplay bonanza! Tsui Hark is kicking some ass with this one!
I rented this one on chance. The only actor in it I heard of was Anthony Wong, though I've hardly seen any of his movies. It was a gamble that paid of.
My fave part was the massive shoot out in the apartment complex that leads to the floor being blown up! Someone thought it would be a good idea to shot a rocket though the window.
Any action fan will undoubtedly enjoy this, and whenever a boring part comes up, there was always some comedy bits. |

 | | | | The Tai Chi Master [1993] (see film details) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Jet Li plays Junbao, a child that grows up as a monk in a Shaolin temple along with his friend Tianbao. During a friendly competition, they are both expelled during a vicious fight when another competitor cheated by using a weapon.
They wander China and during a performance, Junbao and Tianbao go their separate ways, Tianbao joining the military, and Junbao joining the rebels opposing the government.
Tianbao, hungry for power and wealth, sets-up and betrays his lifelong friend, Junbao, in an ambush to attain the rank of general. Junbao, stricken with grief and disbelief, turns to Tai Chi to help.
The climactic finale pits Tianbao against Junbao in a martial arts battle that rages throughout a military encampment while an army of thousands look on.
This is one of my favorite Jet Li movies ever, the other being Fist of Legend. The wire work is stupendous, and adds greatly to Jet Li's already impressive fighting style.
One person who should get a mention in this review is Michelle Yeoh, a babe and a equally impressive fighter.
Any fan of kung-fu period pieces will love this, hell, anyone who likes action will like this. |

 | | | | The Storm Riders (see film details) Swordplay/Sword(s) / Fantasy Conquer is the head of a large clan in medieval China who desires to expand his empire. The seer Mud Buddha one day predicts that Conquer will have to earn the help of Wind and Cloud to achieve this goal. The emperor sends his troops to find Wind and Cloud, kills their parents, and adopts them as his children, raising them with Charity, his blood daughter.
As the prophecy foretold, Conquer’s empire flourishes for the next ten years. As the boys grow up, helping their master to expand his reach, they both fall in love with Charity. She returns the love of both and is torn between the two but one day Conquer makes the decision for them, not aware of the love triangle.
He wants Wind to marry Charity, much to the dismay of Cloud who interrupts the wedding ceremony and attempts to spirit Charity away from his brother. Wind and Conquer are determined not to let the impulsive Cloud get away with this.
This is the way a comic book movie should be done. Strom Riders is so friggin' impressive. Even at its 2 hour length, you don't even notice fly by.
At one point, I said "I wonder how long I've been watching this?" and then the movie ended. I was amazed how enthralled I was.
Sometimes the CGI looks really bad though, it always does, no matter how well you do the effects it never looks flawless.
My one beef is that they used too much CGI in the fight sequences, they didn't enhance the scenes with it, they used CGI to make the scenes.
The movie also ended pretty suddenly, they looks like there might be a sequel which would be very, very cool. I think any one who plans one making a comic book film should watch Storm Riders and see how to make a really good one. |

 | | | | Her Name Is Cat (see film details) Girls With Guns / Action/Adventure NOTE: This review refers to the VCD version of this film.
She is an assassin, she's been hired to take out local Triad bosses. But this conflicts with the RHKPD, who are trying to get the Triad bosses, stakeouts.
After killing one of the Triad bosses. Cat attracts the attention of local police officer John. John starts to tail Cat, following all over town He finally gives up cause she constantly disappears. But John has started to intrigue Cat, so she decides to follow John around.
This eventually leads to a doomed romance, when Cat is arrested by police on John's yacht.
I wasn't really expecting much from this film, and I didn't really get anything from it. Sure I got to see Almen Wong (Cat) in her underwear, some alright fighting scenes, and some good gunplay but it just didn't deliver on the "I care about these characters" level.
If the movie spent an extra 20 minutes developing the characters, I would have felt something for them. Other then Michael Wong (John), who I felt a little sorry for, there's nothing.
One thing that really made this movie hard to watch was the subtitled VCD I got, I don't blame my supplier for that. Michael Wong's character is an English speaking officer, and for some reason they saw fit to subtitled his talking, actually he talked very soft so you could barely hear him, and they got his subtitles wrong. They'd forget to put a word in, spell a word wrong, or put a totally different phrase in. It was bad!!
If I was asked to recommend this movie to anyone, I wouldn't. Its quite the waste of your time, unless you are absolutely hurting for a movie, then go ahead and rent it.
After watching it, the only part that I can still remember is when Cat is seducing one of the Triad bosses, while pole dancing to cheesy 70's porn music. It made me laugh so hard. |

 | | | | Gorgeous (see film details) Comedy / Romance When Bu a girl from a small fishing town in Taiwan finds a glass bottle with a romantic message, she travels to Hong Kong to find the writer of said note.
But when she arrives in HK, she finds out that her prince is not all what he seems. It turns out he's gay.
Heartbroken, but not defeated, Bu carries on with her life in HK. She later meets C.N. (Jackie Chan). She falls deeply in love with him , but C.N. has fears of commitment.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here, and say " THIS IS ONE OF J-CHAN'S BEST MOVIES EVER!!"
I know a lot of people will disagree with me on that, but it is. I love seeing Jackie pound the heck out of people, but ever so often you have to make a movie that showcases your other talents.
Other thing I like about this movie, Shu Qi. Man is she hot!! This is the first movie I saw her in. I fell in love with her in an instant. Just thinking about her makes me fell all warm and fuzzy inside.
For those of you who like to see J-Chan fighting, don't worry there is some and its good too. Jackie takes on one of his students that he trains in Australia. A really short, fast guy. He fights him twice, and both of the fights are roughly 10 minutes long.
You know, this movie is a great date movie. your girlfriend can enjoy the romance between Jackie and Qi, and you can enjoy looking at Qi Shu and the fighting. |

 | | | | Godzilla 2000 Millennium (see film details) Science Fiction / Action/Adventure When I saw the TV ad for G2K, I was friggin happy as hell. I heard rumors all over the internet about a new Godzilla movie after Columbia/Tri-Star screwed up their American Remake, and that TOHO was making a return for the big guy!
Now it's 1999, and the Godzilla Prediction Network (GPN) is studying and tracking Godzilla when he appears on the coast of Nemuro and in his own way, he destroys the city.
Earlier that week, a 60 million year old rock was discovered in the ocean oh Japan, without warning it begins to float and heads for a meeting with Godzilla in Tokai Mura.
Godzilla uses his uses his beefed up CGI atomic breath and breaks the rocks to reveal a UFO!!! The UFO blows Godzilla back into the sea with a hyperblaster but lands and ceases all activities due to the damage caused by Godzilla.
Later, the UFO takes off for Shinjuku where the final battle between the UFO and Godzilla takes place. The UFO transforms into a monster called Orga and proceeds to kick the s**t out of Godzilla.
Toho was going for something new here, and I think they achieved it. G2000, is one of my favorite movies to come out last year. I love the new costume and the head looks friggin' awesome!
The only beef us G-Fans have is the blending over of CG and live action. They looks awkward, but this is Toho's first attempt at using CGI in movies. Hopefully they get it worked out for the next Godzilla movie.
If you plan on buying this, get the DVD and listen to the original language track with subtitles. Dubbed sounds so bad, but that is one of the charms to Godzilla. |

 | | | | Fong Sai Yuk (see film details) Martial Arts / Comedy When former the bandit Tiger Lu decides to go straight, he hosts a kung-fu competition with his lovely daughter, Ting Ting, as the grand prize.
Fong Sai Yuk enters the competition, but when he gets a glimpse of Ting Ting's homely maid impersonating her, he throws the competition.
This forces his mom to take part as Fong's brother to restore the family name. She easily defeats Lee Wan, who then falls in love with her, while Tiger Lu demands she marry Ting Ting.
As if this wasn't enough, the emperor's army have come into town looking for members of the revolutionary Red Lotus Society, a group of mercenaries who want to overthrow the government, and Fong's father just so happens to be a member of.
Another period piece in fashion of Once Upon a Time in China series, but in this Fong Sai Yuk is less serious then Wong Fei Hong.
The fight between Fong and Tiger Lu's wife, he fights her in the competition, is pretty cool. Though the running and jumping on people's heads gets a little tiresome after awhile.
The fight when Fong's mom is fighting Tiger Lu's wife is friggin' awesome!! Intense... heated.... someone is gonna get f**ked up, kinda fight!
And this brings me to another thing about Fong Sai Yuk, Josephine Siao. In my opinion, a gorgeous sample of a women. Not to mention a brilliant fighter.
What is completely mind-blowing in this movie is the end fight. Fong Sai Yuk and a General fight underneath a platform probably 3 feet high! Got to be seen, to believe!! |

 | | | | City On Fire [1987] (see film details) Action/Adventure / Drama The movie that inspired Reservoir Dogs, is a million times better then Reservoir Dogs.
Chow Yun-Fat plays an undercover cop, trying to get the good on some jewel thieves. He goes so deep undercover that he can no longer get out and is now seen as a member of the jewel thief team by his own police members.
Now the only way out for Chow is to take down the jewel thieves from the inside or get taken out by his police force.
City on Fire is now my second favorite Chow Yun-Fat movie, this can act! Plus it doesn't hurt that he looks good with a gun in his hands.
Chow get to be a character that, to me any ways, is an everyday person. He has a life outside of work that he would rather live then being a cop. He goes through a range of emotions, from serious to funny, to happy to scared s**tless.
One of the great scenes in this is the end. The police have all the thieves surround, and the thieves finally learn of Chows secret identity. Mayhem ensues!!
As I stated above, CoF inspired Quentin Tarantino to write Reservoir Dogs. Basically I saw CoF as a sort of prequel to Reservoir Dogs, up til the last 20 minutes which is a direct rip-off.
But given the choice to watch either one, I'd choose CoF. Just an overall better movie. |

 | | | | Bio-Zombie (see film details) Dark Comedy / Horror NOTE: This review refers to the dubbed VHS version of this film.
Hong Kong's answer to George Romero's Dawn Of The Dead. A bio-chemical weapon, disguised as a soft drink, has the power to turn people into flesh-eating zombies.
In deal gone bad, a man steals the drink and wanders into the night. As two young VCD sellers (Woody Invincible and Crazy Bee) are returning to the mall with their bosses' car, they hit the man and pour the drink down the man's throat hoping to revive him.
Unsure of what to do, they bring the man back to the mall with them. The mall closes, and soon there are zombies everywhere! A small group of mall employees must bond together to try and fight their way out.
The first 45 minutes pure set-up and character development, and last 45 are straight out hi-jinks and action!
I got a VHS dubbed version of Bio-Zombie and its really bad. They dubbing is horrible, but most dubbed movies are, it really takes away from the horror aspects of the movie. Making it a comedy instead.
There's a great part when suddenly the movie goes video game and starts showing stats for everyone who's fighting the zombies. I don't know what the mean though, it was in Chinese writing.
Any zombie or HK fan will tell you this is a great pick-up. But please, try to get it subtitled! |
