Flash Point (see film details)
Action/Adventure / Martial Arts

Donnie Yen is the Spencer Tracy of the martial arts film industry. In the 40s and 50s, Spencer Tracy was the go-to guy if a movie needed someone to play a wise politician, sidekick, attorney, businessman, or all around father-figure type. When Spencer Tracy spoke in that voice, oozing sincerity and authority coupled with a little hint of crankiness to it and the squint in his eyes, you just about believed in what he said. What Spencer Tracy did, he did well.

Donnie Yen falls into the same category. If you want somebody to play a hard-ass cop who isn't above going beyond the rule book to take down criminals and using some incredible martial arts skills in order to do it, Donnie's your man. From movies like "In The Line of Duty 4", to the "Tiger Cage" movies, up to and including "SPL", Donnie has the pugnacious, angry, intense, physical, and rebellious cop role down pat.

"Flash Point" isn't so much a movie about two cops taking down a trio of brothers who are up to their necks in crime and violence, it's a giant setup for the last 20 minutes of this movie so we can watch Donnie strut his stuff. When Donnie's eyes get wide and his mouth screws up like he's about to spit something out, watch out, it means he's about to lay some serious hurt on someone. Case in point: in the middle of the film, he's chased the bad guy to an outdoor eating area when the bad guy grabs a kid and tells Donnie to drop his gun or he'll kill the kid. Donnie complies, at which point the bad guy throws the kid aside, letting the kid land on her head and is either dead, or in a coma. Donnie looks at the kid, his face contorts, the camera zooms out, and Donnie proceeds to work the bad guy over.

That scene was just a taste for what happens near the end when he goes toe-to-toe with Collin Chou. This fight scene hurts just to watch it. In this movie and in "SPL," Donnie has stated that he wants to bring Mixed Martial Arts to the screen so as to make martial arts movies look more realistic and at the same time, more exciting. He feels that CGI and wire-fu have had their day and that it's time to get back to basics. It looks like he's succeeded. Like Spencer Tracy, what Donnie Yen does, he does well. I hope he keeps on doing it.

Heroes Two (see film details)
Action/Adventure / Martial Arts

When I was a little kid, I was a big comic book reader. One of the things I enjoyed about them were the ones that featured two superheroes going at it with each other. Marvel Comics pretty much owned that area with Marvel Two-In-One Starring the Thing (which had the Fantastic Four's own Ben Grimm going up against whichever hero was around) and Marvel Team-Up (featuring Spider-Man going up against whichever hero was around).

The plots for these books was, with some variation, pretty much the same: mad scientist/evil genius would get a hold of one hero and con him into fighting another hero. The heroes would fight and then, realizing it was all a misunderstanding, would team up and go after the real bad guy.

Chen Kuan Tai and Alexander Fu Sheng star in this cinematic version of a Marvel comic book. The plot is pretty much like I described those team-up books. Chen plays a Shaolin man who escapes being killed during the burning of the Shaolin temple and is on the run from the Manchus. In to this picture stumbles Fu Sheng, another Shaolin man and totally clueless as to what has happened. The Manchus convince Fu Sheng that Chen is an evil robber and that he should go capture him-which he does. Later on, realizing his mistake, he goes after Chen to free him and team up with him to stop the Manchus.

As I said, this plot reminds me of those old comics. But they were fun to read, and this was fun to watch. This movie is supposed to have set a precedent by showing more realistic fighting onscreen utilizing more authentic styles. It does that, and does it well. I've stated that this movie is like a comic book. It isn't humorous or over the top like a comic. It's deadly serious. Nothing funny or goofy about this movie. It's bloody, violent and has an engaging story.

As always Fu Sheng is a pleasure to watch with his easygoing manner, and Chen Kuan Tai is a treat with his ferocious mannerisms and savage fighting skills. Get this movie for your collection, you'll be glad you did.

The Wandering Swordsman (see film details)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

I bought this movie hoping for some outstanding kung fu. I enjoyed it for "The Smile." In a nutshell, this movie is about a Robin Hood style character called Wandering Swordsman (furthermore called WS for the purpose of this review). WS goes around stealing from the rich/disreputable types and giving to the poor and downtrodden--echoing the Donnie Yen version of "Iron Monkey". WS gets conned into fighting on the side of the bad guys until he finds out the truth later on. That's pretty much it.

What makes this movie stand out is David Chiang--actually, David Chiang's smile. Whenever he flashes "The Smile", he reminds you of a mischievous little brother about to get himself into trouble. He knows he can get into trouble, but he knows he'll have fun while he's doing it.

It's easy to see why he became such a big star at Shaw Bros. He has the easy charm and grace of Douglas Fairbanks in "Mark of Zorro" or Errol Flynn in "The Adventures of Robin Hood." Those were actors who played characters who were confident about themselves and who could afford to be a little reckless because they were so incredibly skilled. They also carried about them a sort of joy of living. They truly enjoyed living and what they did.

Chiang carries himself the same way as those two acting legends. Sure, he's a good martial artist and acrobat, but it's his personality that really cinches things. Check out early on when he baits two thieves in a tavern about their plans for a robbery that night. He knows about the robbery, but they don't know him or know that he knows. Also, the scene where he tries his luck at a gambling den. His look of injured innocence was probably the same kind he gave his mom when he was a little kid when he got busted for some mischief he was committing. You just want to laugh and shake your head at the guy for the sheer impudence he displays. He just comes across that way.

I didn't give this a full 5 stars because the kung fu just didn't do it that much for me. But watch it anyway and enjoy it just for the experience of basking in the charm of David Chiang--and "The Smile".

Fighting Fist / Soul Of Bruce Lee [2-Disc Set] (see film details)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

When buying a Sonny Chiba movie, one must be very careful. While he made some pretty good movies in his career, he also made a lot of crappy ones as well. This Rarescope collection brings together two of his so-called "lesser-known" movies.

"Fighting Fist": A mediocre early 90s film that Chiba directed. He also has a total of about 6 minutes of screen time. Not a film I would put in this collection, but oh well. What kind of saves this film is that the action from the lead is pretty good, and that the blood flows fast and free. Basically, it's about an agent with a past who kills the relatives of a Hong Kong crimelord to bring him out into the open. Problem is, when the bad guy does come out, he has people killed who are very close to the agent. While okay as a standard HK action flick, it doesn't really do anything to make it stand out.

"Soul of Bruce Lee": This is the reason for the 3 stars. Let me state right off the bat that this is a Brucesploitation movie. It has "Bruce" fighting Bolo (yes, Bolo is in this movie). It has "Bruce" copying all of Bruce's moves (when he got injured at one point, I was waiting for him to lick his blood and then scream and go ape shit). The nice thing is, it isn't Sonny imitating Bruce Lee, it's some other guy. The story is about how Sonny goes after the man who killed his master and is now head of the Thai drug cartel. You get some very good fights, including one where Sonny takes on four guys fighting in the Monkey Style. Sue Shiomi also stars in flashback sequences where she nurses Sonny back to health and teaches him martial arts (yep, you read right). It's also a weird film in that Sonny occasionally hooks himself up to an electrical discharge machine that sends charges through his body. One scene has him in a pair of mesh bikini briefs and a mesh muscle shirt with wires strapped to his body while he practices karate while getting zapped. If you ever wanted to see what Sonny would look like in a bondage getup, here's your chance. Sonny also snorts coke out of a bag to help his internal injuries. He comes off as a pretty weird human being in this one. This film has the cheap look and feel of his other film "The Bodyguard." But, unlike that snoozer, this one actually keeps one awake.

As I stated earlier, Sonny made some good films, but a lot of lousy ones as well. If you like Sonny, forget the first one and watch the second one. Not so bad, but not so great either. You've been warned.

Fire Bulls (see film details)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

The empire of Yen wants to expand its hold over the city of Chu and the citizens of Chi. The people flee to the outpost city of Chimo before the Yen army arrives. At Chimo, the refugees, under the leadership of General Tien, make a last brave stand against the Yen army. "Fire Bulls" is the kind of movie that would've been made by Republic or Columbia studios back in the forties or early fifties. This film has talent, energy and ambition to spare but, like most movies of that time, is hobbled by a budget unsuited for such a grand epic. You could describe this film as a big budget epic without the big budget. That reason alone is why I give it four stars. However, what they do have for a budget is seen right up their on the screen for us to enjoy. The lighting and set design of the Yen palace is gorgeous and has an almost unearthly beauty in some of its scenes and the Chimo city has a grittiness you don't see except in those old 1960s spaghetti western films. You can feel the sweat and grime of the refugees as they work to defend the city. The acting is pretty good too. The Yens, with the exception of one of the generals, are portrayed as regular human beings just like the refugees. They are not portrayed as though they have big neon signs on them saying NASTY EVIL GUY. No, they are given the chance to show that they are just as human and foolish as the next person-with all their faults and foibles on display for the world to see. Pretty well rounded depictions, I think. The best shots are saved for the shots of both armies when they take the field. The shot of the Chis as they charge against the Yens toward the end of the film gives us an impression of a never-ending sea of men and cattle that would fit right in with a big budget spectacle. There aren't any martial arts fights in this film, it is strictly a historical epic, and some of the fighting looks cheap (especially scenes of arrows being shot and spears being thrown), but that shouldn't deter you from enjoying this little gem. This is the kind of movie that Zhang Yimou or Ang Lee ought to remake. If you like historical epics, but don't mind if it looks like an old, old school Shaw Brothers film, then add this title to your collection.

Tokyo Shock Martial Arts Pack [3-Disc Set] (see film details)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Three movies that are sold separately. I'll take them one at time here.

7 Grandmasters: A classic! The fights are fantastic! It dives right into the action almost at the very beginning and really holds your interest.

Red Wolf: Think "Die Hard" meets "Under Siege" but with better action.

New Big Boss (aka Legend of the Wolf): This is the kind of movie, along with Iron Monkey and Ballistic Kiss, I'd give somebody to watch if they had never watched a Donnie Yen film and wanted to give him a try. Donnie has the moves and the facial expressions to match.

Master Fighters Of Classic Kung Fu [3-Disc Set] (see film details)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

This box set contains three movies that were previously released separately. I'll review them one by one.

Blooded Treasury Fight: Nice action. The plotting and double dealings didn't really have any suspense to them.

Buddha Assassinator: An old favorite of mine. Hwang Jang Lee stars as an evil prince who is master of the Lo Han style. A young man infiltrates the prince's court to learn that style so he can go up against him with his own Buddhist fist style.

Green Dragon Inn: Another favorite of mine. A straight-arrow marshal has to travel to another city and bring in a man who's wanted for numerous crimes. This man is also the son of a powerful warlord who controls the area and won't give his kid up that easily. Check out the way the good guys convert the inn they're staying at into a death trap.

An enjoyable stupid film. The kung-fu isn't too shabby and I liked the vampiric villain of the piece. Worth watching at 2 in the morning.

The Invincible Super Chan (see film details)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Even though this is an early 70s martial arts period piece, it feels like one of those old Sergio Corbucci spaghetti westerns. The film has a very gritty look to it (or it could just be the print) even in the outdoor daylight scenes - just like a spaghetti western. This is the type of film you don't want to think too hard about, you just want to sit back and wallow in the outrageous fight scenes. Check out the fight scene that starts close to the thirty minute mark. The hero has accepted a duel and is on his way to keep the appointment. The bad guys are stationed all over the mountain region this guy has to get through in order to get to the location of the duel. Also, his sword was taken from him the night before, so he's walking into this barehanded. Our hero goes up against wave after wave of bad guy in order to keep his appointment that the fight ventures into the surreal. Think of the final fight scene in the third "Lone Wolf & Cub" film where Ogami goes up against all manner of samurai and mows them all down and you get a small idea of how the fight goes. All in all, a fun, bloody little film.

The New Adventures Of Wonder Woman Vol. 1 (see film details)
TV Shows/Movies / Action/Adventure

This trio of episodes is from the "modern era". When the series premiered, it took place in the 1940s. When the show was cancelled another network picked it up and changed the setting from the forties to the seventies...and severely dating it. The "World War 2" episodes had a nice nostalgic look to them. They looked and FELT like a comic book. They had a certain charm to them. Yes, there was danger in each episode - but of a very mild variety. You knew WW would beat the Nazis and save the day. Those episodes also had a sense of humor about them. In contrast, these "modern" episodes are humorless action pieces and stories which relegate WW to the status of just another action hero, thereby draining her of her uniqueness. Since these shows came out around the time that the first "Star Wars" movie did, the sci-fi quotient was amped up so just about every episode had a heavy technological feel to them. Even down to a cute little robot and talking computer - the IRAC. The first episode on this disc is a transition piece to bring WW into the seventies. It was a fairly goofy episode with some nice hammy acting by Fritz Weaver as the bad guy, but there was potential in it - wasted potential, but potential nonetheless. That's why I give this disc three stars. The qualities that made the earlier episodes so much fun are completely gone. It's a more serious show now, one that could've taken WW in a new direction...but didn't. Now, these dated "modern" episodes are just standard action fare. Forgettable. Save your money.

The Green Dragon Inn (see film details)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

This is a nice little old school film. The kind of movie to watch on a late Friday or Saturday night. The plot is simple: a warlord's son commits murder, is captured by a peace officer and is escorted across a stretch of land that is controlled by the warlord and his minions. Obviously, the warlord wants to get his son back, so he has his assassins go after the peace officer and his posse to try and grab the prisoner. As the death toll mounts, the official and his company wind up at Green Dragon Inn - in the warlord's own town. Not good. What happens next is a standoff as the official and his group barricade themselves against the warlord's forces while trying not to relinquish the prisoner. The plot is reminiscent of the old westerns of the 1950s - notably, "3:10 to Yuma" with Glenn Ford and Van Heflin ( although I don't think Van Heflin ever ran a sword through a man's mouth and had it come out from the other side of his head ). The fighting is pretty good and devoid of any wire-fu. The story moves quickly and gets suspenseful towards the middle. There are no romantic subplots, no comic relief sidekicks, no complex messages or political intrigue, no cute little kids, and some of the bad guys are just as handsome and noble as the good guys! Remarkable! All in all, this is a fairly decent film that really doesn't ask anything from the viewer-except to just kick back and enjoy the ride. Not one of the great films of the genre but not a bad way to spend a weekend either!

Eat Drink Man Woman (see film details)
Comedy / Romance

First off, I've only seen the Region1 MGM DVD version. Apart from that, moviewise, this is a nice little movie. It's not heavy on the drama nor is it heavy on comedy-but it has both. It's the type of film to see at night or on a rainy day. But it isn't boring. The story in a nutshell: a widower who is a famous chef has three young daughters who are dealing with the men and relationships in their lives. They are also dealing with their fellings for dad-who has lost all sensation in his taste buds and feels that his life isn't as meaningful anymore. He's not suicidal, but he does feel that he's just going through the motions of living day to day. It's not a dreary movie. It's a nice little film. The star of the film isn't the actors, it's the food onscreen that really makes your mouth water! The food is used as an analogy for what is going on in the lives of this family. This is not a highbrow film nor is it a broad slapstick type of movie. It's a nice little indie film that deserves to be discovered again.

Eagle Vs. Silver Fox [Ground Zero] (see film details)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

BADBADBADBADBAD!!!! Even for a kung-fu flick this movie is BAD!! It looks bad, the acting is bad, the fighting is so-so. The only reason I give this a rating of 0.5 is that the fellow playing Silver Fox is renown for his superb precision kicking skills. Unfortunately, we don't get a whole lot of that and that's a shame because when he does go into action he's a sight to behold. Avoid this movie!! One last note: most of the voices are dubbed with different local British accents!

Godzilla, Mothra, And King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (see film details)
Science Fiction / Action/Adventure

Another fun Godzilla film! Unlike the previous ones, this one is told more from a ground level perspective making this film just a little more serious than the Godzilla films of old . You now get to feel what it's like on the street ( or in the building ) when Godzilla tangles with Mothra and King Ghidorah and you get to see people getting stepped on, hospitals fill up with severely wounded people and,in one scene, watch as Godzilla's tail makes short work of a hospital as a patient watches - to her great misfortune. The film puts an interesting spin on the old legend-Ghidorah is one of the good guys and helps Mothra and Baragon to destroy Godzilla. Also, Godzilla is now a repository for all the souls of Japanese soldiers that were killed during World War 2. It was asked in the movie,"If he has these souls with him, why does he hate Japan?" "Because he's got a few American GI souls in there too." Oh. Godzilla moves a lot quicker than in the old films and is helped tremendously by some seamless CGI effects. Some highlights: Godzilla fighting Baragon at a holiday resort, Godzilla fighting King Ghidorah in an underwater battle, a woman's kitchen falling to pieces every time Godzilla puts his foot down, Godzilla's first appearance to trio of fishermen and, lastly, watching Godzilla power up so he can fire his atomic breath. Overall, a sleek yet solemn film with great FX and a solid entry in the Godzilla film series!

My Wife Is A Gangster (see film details)
Action/Adventure / Girls With Guns

If this film were made in the US during Hollywood's golden years, the cast might've had James Cagney, William Bendix, and Bette Davis with either Jimmy Stewart or Henry Fonda thrown in for good measure. As it is, this film has a good cast that's more than able to walk the fine line between drama and comedy. A girl-named Eu-jin hasn't seen her older sister since they were little kids. One day, Eu-jin gets a call that reunites her with her older sister. She's in the hospital and she's dying ( from what, we don't know ). The dying sister asks a favor from Eu-jin who, so happy to see her sis, is eager to comply. "Anything", says Eu-jin, "Name it". The favor: Get married and raise a family. While this might seem a little daunting for some girls, it proves especially so for Eu-jin. Eu-jin is the number two or "Big Brother" for the local triad family. She's tough, ruthless, and a formidable martial artist (all this is seen in the first 15 minutes of the film). After a series of missteps, which reminds one of "My Fair Lady" or "Pretty Woman", Eu-jin finds a husband-a Sammo Hung-looking civil servant in his late 30's who has no clue about his bride's shady life. Eu-jin has to really work at getting the hang of the whole domestic-obedient wife routine while at the same time prevent a rival mob, led by a man named White Shark, from taking over her group. This is a funny film-especially in the scenes where Eu-jin is getting a makeover and learning how to snag a man. The wedding is a hoot as well. The legbreakers tell the boss that they "had to close down five clubs" to fill the church with pimps, hookers, and other assorted low life. The scenes between the hard edged, severe Eu-jin and her older new husband (there has to be a 12 year gap between them at the very most ) on their honeymoon and in dealing with day to day life is funny as well. Some of the funniest scenes are when she's trying to have a baby. Hubby had to deal with a wife who hid herself in the bathroom on their honeymoon and at one point promised to kill him if he ever touched her without permission; now his wife is having sex with him all over the place at various times and places with almost limitless endurance. These aren't little bouts of canoodling with any follow-up pillow talk-these are all night marathons. They're also tastefully, and humorously, done. What kept me from giving this film 5 stars is that the last 15-20 minutes are very violent and dramatic. Where we had some light drama throughout the film now turns hardcore. It sort of sours what has come before it but it manages to work its way to an interesting resolution with how hubby deals with his wife's line of work - which I won't spoil here. Also, the second disc, which contains a very generous helping of special features, does not have access to any English subtitles whatsoever but, since the scenes involved setting up the action and special effects as well as outtakes, you kind of got the idea what was going on anyway. Altogether this was a fun, if violent, movie. What I also liked was that the Eu-jin's crime family is also well drawn with their own little scenes to shine in. Also, the soundtrack really rocks. Think of the music used in the fight scenes for the first "Blade" movie and you get the idea. Also, there's some Korean hip-hop thrown in which sounds VERY cool. Definitely worth watching. Again and again.
