Spooky Encounters [3-Movie Set] (see film details)
Ghost / Martial Arts

This is a very good movie- a fun to watch Kung Fu occult flick... Starring the great Samo Hung and has a cameo performance by the late great Lam Chi Ying it show cases some fantastic kung fu, and weird Chinese monster's.

I think this was the first Kung fu zombie/ vampire flick a subject that is sometimes taken to lightly Chinese zombies and Vampires are a serious problem and while not as prevalant as lofan zombies and Vampires still pose a serious threat.

The ending sequence is a synergy of excellent kung fu and Taoist voodoo magic. Featuring a battle between "No Cha The Great" and the "Monkey King".

Samo's kung fu is simply amazing and if you want to see what his martial arts moves were like in his early years- before "Sha Po Lang"- this film may show you that he has lost little if any speed and has gained power.

The only complaint is that the western version of this movie changed the ending a bite detracting from the film.

SPL: Sha Po Lang (see film details)
Crime / Drama

They say that Sammo Hung Lao Tzu is sometime spotted shopping in or around his neighborhood in LA. People movie fans that have ran into him said that he is always cordial and friendly--quite charming in fact.

What a change from the intense fierce and deadly dragon head he plays in Kill/Zone Sha Po Lang so convincingly. His fighting style is amazing- lighting fast, simple effective and powerful. Kill Zone is a very good film super action and charecters. Don Yen and Wu Jing are great as well. But it is Sammo that steals the show.

On the second disk during the interview section there is some lamentation from the stars of this film that the younger generation of HK actors have little or no Kung fu training..It (Classical Chinese Martial Arts Training) seems to tough for young people these days--I hope this is wrong--and that Hong Kong action and martial arts films will raise again, and lead the Asian action film industry once more.

Sha Po Lang AKA 'Kill Zone" is a return to the great action films of old Hong Kong.

Check it out--it will give you hope that we will see more of the same type of great HK action films in the future.

Mad Monkey Kung Fu (see film details)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

"This world is hard and cruel and no one ever gets a chance here."

Great movie! One of the top-ten HK flicks to have in your collection. An early tragic/comedy kung fu classic with lessons about 'wu de' and great action.

Old Master Lau Kar Leung performs in and directs this classic kung fu action movie showcasing the authentic monkey style kung fu.

It is said that the Master Leung may have learned about monkey style from the old grand master Ken Tak Hoi. That's just kung fu "tea time talk" though--don't really know if it is true.

The young actor playing the Monkey system 'tu di' is quite good in his role as the young rascal who slowly talks the old master into teaching him.

This movie also features the lovely and deadly Kara Hui ("Young Auntie") using her years of kung fu training with great effect.

The film teaches a moral lesson about the kung fu world's ethics. "Martial artists should practice hard and avoid overindulgence." This may be the central premise of this movie, as the main character falls into a terrible trap due to his failure to follow this precept, and so does the antagonist.

If you like kung fu, kung fu training, and kung fu movies; you will certainly enjoy this film very much.

Highly recommended.

Cai Li Fo Kung Fu Series: Eighteen-Arhats Boxing - Kylin Fist (see film details)
Instructional / Martial Arts

This master has the real Shaolin--quite interesting to see him perform and teach he is a direct descendant of the ancient old master who started Choy Lay Fut Kung Fu. You can see some of the internal methods of the system here and he is teaching his kung fu out in a clear understandable way to his students. This is not a teaching DVD but it will give you a good idea of what Choy Lay fut kung fu is about and what it looks like. His student are training hard- they are having fun and they obviously like the teacher and enjoy learning from him very much. One of the better DVD's on authentic Shaolin Kung fu out there...

The whole series is recommended.

The Chinese Peculiar Weapon Series: Hidden Weapon [2-Disc Set] (see film details)
Instructional / Martial Arts

This is a very interesting DVD on a hidden seldom seen aspect of Chinese martial arts -one that is very seldom taught. I remember one night after practice listening to a Shaolin master talk about defense from guns. He said "If the gun is not pointed at you and you are close- you have a chance, if it is farther away and leveled at you- hard to get them even with a Fei Biao". Sifu, one of the students asked, " Do you know how to throw Fei Biao?" "No" said the teacher. I think he knew quite well...

Quite interesting, the many type of flying weapons used by the Shaolin Master on the "Hidden Weapons" dvd. Bicycle spokes, Iron chop stick, flying stars, stones. All are propelled with the whole body 'whip' power asociated with high levels of Chinese martial arts. The end of the whip is the wrist. The various flying weapons are delivered with great force.

If you are interested in Chinese flying weapons, you may enjoy this DVD very much. And you could learn something from it- if you want to practice the Chinese flying darts.

A Chinese Torture Chamber Story (see film details)
Horror / Erotica

Warning! Overall this movie may be bad for your Kung Fu! :)

Funny and fun to watch Cat. III caper. This is a "Cat. III" film--it is not a martial arts morality play. Seems a bit strange to complain about the explicit and gross nature of this film in reveiw. You knew the job was dangerous when you took it, and what you see is what you get. The title after all is "Chinese Torture Chamber Story", not "Wong Fei Hung Goes To Tremont". .

I liked this movie and found the film quite interesting--shows the brutal practices of the Imperial court and some "fictionalized" sexual practices of the well to do in old China.

Masters and Johnson could not imagine many of the methods shown in this DVD.

E.G. There is a hyper energetic sexual high wire kung fu sequence shot high up in a bamboo grove-- like Ang Lee's famous Crouching Tiger scean- but without clothes.

This is a type of quality production that we seldom see out of Hong Kong these days. It has sex, moon eyed romance, torture, skulldruggery, and comedy all in one tight little package. If you are interested in watching an adult CAT III production, this is a good place to start.

Some quotes so you can see what you are getting into if you want watch this film. Sad; they don't seem to write great scripts like this anymore.

Quotes:

  • "He died of a penis explosion!"
  • "Very happy to be screwed by you!"
  • "I want a giant pair!"
  • "Damn! his dork is long as a donkeys!"

Warning! Overall this movie may be bad for your Kung Fu! :)

Five Shaolin Masters (see film details)
    Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Classic! Get this movie before it's gone and you can't. A showcase of the great Lau Kar Leung's Lam Sai Wing line of Hung Gar Kung Fu. Da Tang and Choy Lay Fut kung fu are also used by the brave Shaolin layman to fight the evil Manchu henchmen.

Chi Kwan Chun, Fu Sheng, David Chiang, Ti Lung, and Meng Fei are the good guys--the greats of old school Shaw brothers kung fu films.

Wei Lung Wei is traitor number one, the evil ranked number seven fighter of the Shaolin temple, the dastardly "Ma Fu Yi".

    The kung fu is great!

    Magic Cop (see film details)
    Ghost / Comedy

“Once a year the hell gate opens--if we don’t appease the ghosts--if they feel frustrated, what do you think will happen?”

I think you will get a very good Hong Kong movie about a Taoist Cop with Lam Chi Ying.

The great Lam Chi Ying plays “Uncle Fung Zee” a Taoist Sorcerer who choses to work a day job as a cop because; "Both Cops and Taoist Priest’s serve the people"

Uncle Fung has to deal with a Fox of Japanese Witch (Michiko Nishiwaki) from the evil Nine Lotus Cult who is using oafish body builders, black magic and Zombies to move and sell drugs. Uncle Fung also has to contend with his two young police department protégés, Hong Kong hipster cops who are fond of technology, live in a bachelor pad complete with giant fish tank don‘t believe in magic and are after his cute sexy niece. Uncle Fung trash’s their batcholar pad puts up a Kwan Kung alter, adjusts their Feng Shuey and makes sure they behave themselves arround his neice. Uncle Fung is very tactical he makes great use of everyday objects to manipulate time and space. Michiko Nishiwaki is a intense actress and plays well as the enemy witch who uses ‘ice magic’. She is quite something to watch. As a witch though she should have known better. If you are a Japanese witch, you just don't- look into a ba gwa mirror. It will be a 'bad hair day" for you for sure- if you do.

Lam Chi Ying performs popular Taoist ritual and magic with the élan and skill of a real Tao-Shih- making you wonder if he was really trained in such arts. His kung fu is excellent and he puts it to good use in action against “thunder leg” Billy Chow is some amazing fights. The film is fun to watch and one of the better Hong Kong Occult/ Kung fu action films available. The special effect in the last scenes or not that great- low budget late 80’s claymation.

Good movie reccomended- late 80’s kung fu and occult magic action. One of Lam Chi Ying’s last films. You may enjoy watching it on holloween with some friends! After all that is when-- "The Hell Gate opens"

    Some quotes from the script.

Young hipster cop to Lao Fung,“You are superstitious”. Uncle Fung “And you are superficial”

“If it was not a strange case- they would not have sent me- someone is using Chinese zombies to move drugs”

“If we can solve cases by worshiping why don’t we hire Taoist priests as cops?”

Why indeed? Even in the west scientific detectives have consulted psychics- often with surprising effective results!

    Drunken Monkey (see film details)
    Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

This Lau Kar Leung movie features very little wirework and more old school kung fu. The script is not great--it has too way much goofy Canton comedy and 'makes no sense storyline' about a monkey, chuan po; and it bogs down in places- but overall it is a real treat to see the old Master Lau Kar Leung back in action. He is fantastic. Also great to see Lau Kar Hui ( Gordan Liu ) working Hung fist again in a classical type KF film with his usual skill. Wu Jing is in it as well- a very skilled martial artist- with to much silly kid stuff to contend with in this script. Great costumes and sets Great kung fu old school action Great players with real martial arts skill Great settings and camera work.. Script- not so great I like the movie- if you are a old school kung fu fan you will enjoy it as well... I hope Lau Kar Leung will make many more films! Great to see him again in "Drunken Monkey 2003".

Send him some good scripts! Pangolin

Opium And The Kung-Fu Master (see film details)
    Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Very good old school KF movie, shows that no matter how skilled you are, your bad habits can destroy your kung fu. Lots of action, strange weapons, flying thieves, cornball comedy, lion dance, brutal stunts, training sequences--mostly South Shaolin martial arts. Though Chan Kun Tai of Tai Sheng Pek Kwa fame plays the main villain, this is a real kung fu movie; the actors are skilled martial artists and it shows. The script is well written--in regards to martial arts it makes many good points.

"Unless you have full confidence in your ability to kick someone, best to not try it."

"The leg attack is only used in connection with the hands."

"Your addiction is too deep. You will lose."

One of the "Ten Tigers of Canton" overestimates his ability to control his smoking habit--disaster is sure to follow. This movie shows an aspect of old Chinese life that is seldom touched on in film: drug-induced tragedy and pathos. Destruction of a martial artist master by vice.

Unreal, just unreal, what Hong Kong kung fu actors were capable of doing in action films long before before CGI. Ti Lung is a great player and actor; he gets too hammy doing the "man with the golden arm" detox bit, but overall this is a really good old school KF movie.

A recommended movie, its main point: "Break the leg of all your bad habits."
