A very blatant rip-off of "Jaws", so much so the original title was going to be "Claws". But if you go into the movie understanding how much of a rip-off this is, you can have a lot of fun with it. You have the same archetype characters: local law enforcement official who is out of his league with a giant natural killing machine running amok, a somewhat crazy biologist who in this case drapes himself in pelts and lives with the animals, and then the hardened hunter who has a personal grudge against the beast in question. This time it is possibly the most hilarious tale possible about a herd of man-eating grizzlies laying waste to his Native American ancestors. The rest is rather solid b-movie filmmaking of a very fake bear killing all the sexy ladies that enter the woods--don't they always go after the sexy ones first? Don't expect some kind of original and groundbreaking film, expect a low budget "Jaws" knock-off that is a lot of fun to watch in a big group. |

Excellent idea that fell apart due to bad planning and a poor script that relies too heavily on monologuing and replaying a couple of scenes over and over and over to pad time in an 80-minute movie. The complete lack of any resolution makes me think they're aiming for a sequel, but I doubt they could make another--if they did it would probably be mostly a recap of this movie. It was fairly obvious the extra low budget really spelled doom for this overly ambitious idea. Low budget filmmakers need to realize that you can't make a grand zombie apocalypse movie on a low budget, it never works no matter how many people try. Single locations, small cast, and a straightforward script that has a beginning middle and end with lots of splattering blood is what makes a good low budget movie; and while it is commendable that they are trying to do something different with the zombie movie, they need work within their limits. Unfortunately this film had very low limits and tried to go way beyond them. |

U can make a good zombie movie w/ low budget, Romero's original "Night of the Living Dead" is a good example. The film "EVIL" from Greece, was ok. & Peter Jackson's "DeadAlive" is great. | JV47842 |

About as basic a plot as a kung-fu movie can get, but it really shows the strength of Shaw Brothers. While other studios would have probably churned out a less than stellar product with such a simple story, this managed to stay interesting and kept it moving along without getting bogged down anywhere. I think the last fight was a little generic--a bunch of guys fighting in a field--but again it managed to keep my attention and made me realize that even the most basic of kung fu movies in the right hands can be very entertaining. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! | | AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | Y | | JV47842 |

I really wanted to like this but alas it failed to live up to expectations, even as low as they were. Four privileged white college students are on a vacation to a tropical resort and after a week of booze and beach they get bored and go in search of some adventure that quickly turns sour--stop me if this sounds way too familiar. After a series of ridiculously stupid mishaps--really, when there are some really pissed guys with weapons yelling at you in a foreign language you understand none of, do you really take pictures of them? After this they are trapped by what I swear looked like killer pot plants, it's the real Reefer Madness. The rest of the movie is them stabbing themselves, stabbing each other, and screaming at each other like monkeys in the zoo. It's another in a recent trend of white people in peril in foreign land movies that can't help but be bogged down by it. The other big problem, aside from the plot, was the characters aren't likable enough for you to care about them being attacked by the plants, another flaw of pretty much every white people in peril movie. The first twenty minutes is always them acting like entitled dingbats belittling the locals because they are Americans and Americans are number 1. I had such high hopes for this movie. I really want domestic horror to pull itself out of the PG-13/remake malaise it is stuck in and get back to what it use to be in the '70s and '80s: bloody scary fun. But they just can't seem to get all four wheels going in the same direction at the same time, and "The Ruins" is just another example of that. |

I liked the film a lot, it had good pacing w/ a lot of tension. | JV47842 | | N | I actually agree with most of your points, but I still think it was much better than 2 stars. Kind of hard to deduct points for stupid white people being dumbasses, since that's really the basis for almost the entire horror genre... :) | Choco |

 | | | | The Inglorious Bastards (see film details) War / Action/Adventure
In the tradition of "The Dirty Dozen" and "Kelly's Heroes" comes another excellent World War II actioner. "Inglorious Bastards" is an excellent kill 'em all war movie of a kind that isn't seen anymore. It is a refreshing change of pace from all factual serious World War II films made these days. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! | | AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | Y | This is one of my favorite men on a suicide mission movies- the action is great. The film also has great comedic moments, from the little italian guy. The other men on mission movie I love is Clint Eastwood's "Where Eagles Dare". | JV47842 |

My second favorite Jackie Chan movie right behind "Drunken Master 2". It's Jackie Chan at his fighting peak along with Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao. One of the best things about this movie is the wanton destruction of just about every set you see in the movie. Tons of fun for any fan of kung fu. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! | | AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | Y | A classic Jackie Chan picture, with incredible action sequences & rip-roaring stunts. | JV47842 |

 | | | | Under The Flag Of The Rising Sun (see film details) Drama / War
Outstanding film. Kinji Fukasaku at his best. Exceptional tale of the Japanese men that wasted their lives in the sweltering jungles of the Pacific who were just men--tired, sick men, not the action movie villains we've come to see them as. One of my favorite war movies despite the fact that there is almost no depiction of actual combat anywhere in the film. The "Rashomon" style is used very well in the film, much like the French film "A Very Long Engagment" which is a much happier version of the same type of story. A heart-wrenching personal tale of the horrors of war delivered by one of the greatest directors of cinema anywhere in the world. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! | | AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | Y | I couldn't agree more with your review. | | | | Human Lanterns (see film details) Horror / Thriller
Decidedly grim kung fu horror story that really blends the kung fu and the horror exceptionally well. The colour in this film is exceptionally vivid, it reminded me of the gialli films from Mario Bava with the very distinct reds and blues. Lau Wing does an excellent job of being a complete asshole for the first 2/3s of the film, but by the end you really find yourself sympathizing for him despite all his rather obnoxious tendencies. Definitely a good movie to watch on Halloween if you're a fan of kung fu. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! | | AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | Y | you're right i found the film very entertaining. | kung fu kid |

 | | | | Zatoichi [2003] (see film details) Drama / Swordplay/Sword(s)
Absolute masterpiece. Beat Takeshi weaves a wonderful satirical tale in a world full of memorable characters all the way down to the workmen who keep time with the soundtrack. Even if you aren't a fan of samurai films or have any real knowledge of the Zatoichi film series, you will love this movie. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! | | AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | Y | totally agree with you i think this is takeshi kitano at his very best. | kung fu kid | | Y | A very intriguing beat Takeshi film. | JV47842 | | Y | Funny, even though it's based on a legendary character and series of films, this film is a true original. | Choco |

 | | | | Invincible Pole Fighter (see film details) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure
Pure Kung Fu Perfection. Nothing less than this can describe "Invincible Pole Fighter". Every fight is amazing, even the small fights or Fu Sheng's bouts of the kung fu crazies are marvelous. The final fight is the stuff of legend, especially if you have an aversion to having your teeth removed by way of pole--ouch. Everybody does a great job, from Gordon Liu (who could entertain me while making a ham sandwich), to Lily Li (who was excellent as the matriarch of the Yang Family), to Fu Sheng (who sadly died midway through filming this movie). One of the greatest martial arts films ever made and should be in every fan's collection. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! | | AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | Y | i agree with you this fu film is awsome and should be in everyones fu collection. | kung fu kid |

Superb kung-fu/comedy. The comedy does take a little getting used to, but the spectacular fight scenes more than make up for the slightly off-kilter beginning. Kara Hui really does steal the show as the country girl dropped squarely into the big city. Plus, any time you can get Gordon Liu into a floppy white afro wig, you really have a movie worth watching. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! | | AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | Y | I agree- comedy so,so-Kung Fu action great! | Little Dragon Fan |

 | | | | Mother Of Tears (see film details) Horror / Thriller
The thirrd and hopefully final film of Dario Argento's Mothers Trilogy. Unlike "Suspiria" and "Inferno", this movie lacked any of the surreal dreamlike quality that made the other two so enjoyable. This is just a straightforward brutal slasher movie. The killings are off the chart for their brutality and after the first couple it starts to get old, which is seemingly the only leg this movie was meant to stand on, so what's left is a rather mediocre slasher movie that is a sorry successor to such a great film like "Suspiria". | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! | | AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | Y | I was disappointed with this movie, this being the last film of the Mother's trilogy, it just never fits in with the style of Suspiria & Inferno. They don't make films like they used to make them. | JV47842 |

 | | | | Meatball Machine (see film details) Horror / Science Fiction
A decidedly grim sci-fi gore fest very much in the vein of "Tetsuo: The Man Of Iron". This is not the kind of neat, clean sci-fi that comes from America. This has a very dirty industrial feel to it. I think the lower budget helps, especially with the scientist whose gear is all very jury-rigged--it gives it a certain real quality to it. If you are in the mood for a much harsher flavour of sci-fi, this is for you. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! | | AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | Y | an intense gore-fest- I agree with your review. | JV47842 |

 | | | | Lupin The Third: Strange Psychokinetic Strategy (see film details) Action/Adventure / Comedy
This is a wonderful movie for fans of Lupin. At its heart it is a 70s caper movie and has a caper movie sense of humor about it. Now, this works for some people but not for others. I love the humorous cartoon style mixed in with the rest of the film. It does help to have some understanding of the characters beforehand, but it shouldn't detract from the film itself. The film's tone it much more in line with the original TV series (known as the Green Jacket Series) which came out in the early 70s and has little in common with Lupin's most famous outing, "The Castle Of Cagliostro", which came out years after this movie was made. Don't go into this expecting a more action-oriented film like the later animated films either, this was done a tiny budget and is excellent for what little they had. I love this movie and think it does as well or better than many of the animated films. Long Live Lupin. |

 | | | | Shaolin Challenges Ninja (see film details) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure
Outstanding film. It is mainly just a series of fighting demonstrations showcasing various Chinese vs. Japanese styles, but don't take this as a slight because they are some of the most engaging and technical fight scenes ever in a film. Gordon Liu does an amazing job with the varying kung fu and xuxia ,styles which keeps the fights all unique. A lesser film would haven't been able to make each fight singular, but this film manages to make very fight exciting and new. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! | | AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | Y | highly enjoyable, I love this film. | JV47842 | | Y | Absolutely. This film is just pure enjoyment from start to finish, despite the fact that it would have become tiresome in the hands of nearly any other cast/crew. | Choco |

 | | | | Come Drink With Me (see film details) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure
Excellent early kung-fu film. King Hu truly set the stage for all kung fu films to follow. While there were still a few rough spots in the fight scenes, for its day it was truly groundbreaking and manages to stay a very entertaining and exciting kung fu film even after 42 years. Cheng Pei-Pei and Yueh Hua are excellent as Golden Swallow and Drunk Cat. I love kung fu movies that have such great names--in the U.S. we get Bob and John, but kung-fu movies get Golden Swallow and Drunk Cat. A true kung fu classic that will delight any fan. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! | | AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | Y | I def. agree- this is an entertaining flick. | JV47842 |
