The Kid With The Golden Arm (see film details)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

I can see why this is a fan favorite, despite the somewhat lackluster fight choreography: colorful villains and heroes and a simple storyline that moves along at brisk pace to a satisfying conclusion. My fourth favorite Venoms film after "5 Deadly...", "Crippled Avengers", and "Invincible Shaolin". Even if "Killer Army" has much better choreography, I still like this movie better as a whole.

Knight Errant (see film details)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Four stars might be a bit high for a silly Chopsocky movie, but [the Pathfinder Pictures DVD had] a very fine print, Chinese, English Dub, and commentary track so I'll round up half a star. Jimmy Wang Yu achieved fame at Shaw Brothers for his portrayal of the One Armed Swordsman in 1967. By the beginning of the 70s he left Shaw Brothers, presumably to have more artistic control over his films. What I like about Jimmy is he always makes his movies entertaining. If this movie isn't as over the top as "Return of the Chinese Boxer" and "Master of the Flying Guillotine", it's still a lot of fun. Also, unlike those classics, it's not a period piece but a contemporary (1973) story with a feel similar to the Bruce Lee movies "The Big Boss" and "Way of the Dragon", but goofier. Not to say it's a kung fu comedy, but there is something about Wang Yu's movies form this period that gives them an underlying winking feel. Also worth mentioning is an early appearance of the great Yasuaki Kurata as one of the three Japanese brothers who have been trained by the "lady with a iron fist", a short tubby woman who proves to be Jimmy's greatest challenge (and the inspiration behind the movie's most hilarious moments).

In short, if you are looking for an early 70s kung fu flick with a contemporary setting, you could do a lot worse than this flick.

Dragon Inn [1967] (see film details)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Brilliant film. I can see why this was one of Hong Kong's biggest hits of 1967. Those looking for complex and brutal fight choreography--well you shouldn't be looking at a film from 1967 for that. What you will get is a solid story, great characters, excellent pacing (in that regard it's even better than "A Touch Of Zen"). If you have just gotten a taste of the stately grace of King Hu by way of the Dragon Dynasty DVD release of "Come Drink with Me" and want more, well you've come to the right place!

As much as I love the work of director Chang Cheh, I love the polar opposite style of King Hu just as much. King Hu is the yin to Chang Cheh's yang. King Hu's stories reveal themselves slowly like the peeling of the layers of an onion. He is also a master of atmosphere, primarily through the use of stunning location shots and impeccable use of traditional Chinese music (although I did note the use of a piece by Debussy in one scene). In summary, this is an ideal introduction to the work of King Hu.

Dirty Ho (see film details)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Unlike Chang Cheh, it seems that Lau Kar Leung was always trying something new, never content to repeat himself. "Dirty Ho" is yet another utterly original kung fu flick from the master.

Gordon Liu is the 11th Prince. The King is about to convene a meeting to select a successor and the 4th Prince wants to make sure Gordon doesn't make it to the meeting. Now Gordon is not really interested in politics, he just wants to enjoy good wine and beautiful antiques. But everywhere he goes to enjoy these things, people act friendly towards him, but are actually trying to kill him. Here we get the famous scenes of people fighting but trying not to look like they are fighting. Brilliant.

Given the situation, the only person Gordo can trust is someone he knows hates his guts! Enter Mr. Ho of the film's title. Ah, the irony rife in this film is part of what makes it so great! Mr. Ho is a thief and at the beginning of the film he is Gordon's rival for the attentions of the girls at the brothel.

I've heard that a more literal translation of the title is "Rotten Head Ho". Gordo manages to cut Ho's head with a poison blade and blackmails Ho into becoming his student and bodyguard by threatening to withhold the weekly administrations of the secret antidote. At first Mr. Ho is understandably pissed off, but he soon learns to respect the 11th Prince and learn his Kung Fu. Eventually Mr. Ho does his very best to get the 11th Prince to the King's meeting alive.

Y this film is a blast and 4 stars is spot on.kung fu kid

Ten Tigers From Kwangtung (see film details)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Ti Lung, Fu Sheng AND the 6 Venoms!? What a cast. However the story is not as interesting as "5 Deadly Venoms" or "Crippled Avengers". Quite the run-of-the-mill Ming Rebels vs. Ching bad guys. But the end fights with the next generation (Baby Venoms? I'm not sure) is quite good. Not essential but not a bad addition to your Shaw Bros. collection.

Shaolin Challenges Ninja (see film details)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

This is a stand-out film for Shaw Brothers. It's always mentioned that nobody gets killed in this, which may be a first for the studio, but besides that I found the husband and wife rivalry very refreshing. The fact that Gordon has to fight 7 separate fights against 7 different styles of Japanese martial arts is by itself worthy of making this a must-see classic.

Shaolin Intruders (see film details)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

This is another solid Shaw Brothers production with two likable protagonists (the straight man and the devil-may-care gambler) who are out to prove that four maurading bandits are actually Shaolin monks gone bad. Lots of excellent fight scenes ensue!

Excellent. One of my top five favorite Lau Kar Leung movies, and that's saying a lot, the man is a genius!

Five Deadly Venoms (see film details)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

What can I say, there's good reason this is considered a classic. You've got occult-tinged kung-fu, a well-paced plot that unfolds like a mystery story, and an engaging set of characters.

Two Champions Of Shaolin (see film details)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Not essential Chang Cheh, but a decent entry in the Shaw Bros. kung-fu canon.

Holy Flame Of The Martial World (see film details)
Action/Adventure / Martial Arts

Fans of "Zu: Warriors From Magic Mountain" and "Kung Fu Cult Master" will want to check this one out. Lots of wire-work sword fights, great sets and it moves at brisk pace. A classic that more people should be aware of.
