Crying Freeman (see film details)
Action/Adventure / Martial Arts

Oh I wanted to like this more... I am a Mark Dacascos fan, but converting Western comic books into film can be tricky. Translating manga into a Hollywood movie can be near impossible to do well. "Crying Freeman" very earnestly tries to bring the original manga to life but doesn't live up to its potential.

As other reviewers have said, get a copy of "Drive" or "Brotherhood of the Wolf" if you are a Mark Dacascos fan.

YI wanted to like this too being an admirer of the Manga series. The film fails, it has clever director Christopher Gans style. But Dacascos skills were not showcased well. The movie is an upset & has built a weird fan base that I will never understand.JV47842

Blind Fury (see film details)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Dutch actor, and total bad-ass, Rutger Hauer performs in this loose interpretation of the Zatoichi legend. I was 12 when I saw this and while it isn't quite as cool as it seemed back then, I am still giving 4 stars for old time's sake (or young time's sake as the case may be).

YWho does not love this awesome movie! Rutger Hauer as a blind swordsman is priceless. I saw this film was I was kid too- brings a lot of great memories.JV47842
YTotally agree. Saw it as a kid, loved it. Not quite as good now, but Rutger Hauer's mischievous charisma steals the show.Choco

Shogun Assassin Collection [5-Disc Set] (see film details)
Action/Adventure / Martial Arts

AnimEigo has done an amazing job with Lone Wolf and Cub! This is the only series I would even consider purchasing dubbed instead of subbed. I bought AnimEigo's "Shogun Assassin" releases as they came out and spent more money than they are charging for the box-set. I don't mind at all though, I got to watch this versions earlier instead of waiting for the full set.

Yi reckon lone wolf and cub is the best trilogy of movies out there and i would go as far as saying it's better than the star wars trilogy now thats saying something.kung fu kid
YYes, The Shogun Assassin films are great. This is an awesome collection for any Lone Wolf & Cub fans.JV47842

Shaolin Challenges Ninja (see film details)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

The first half is a martial/marital comedy nod to Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew". While William S. would generally wrap up misunderstandings with witty dialog and a happy ending, "Shaolin Challenges Ninja" ("Heroes Of The East") fills the second half of the movie with challenges and beat-downs. The only disappointing fight for me was Gordon's bout with the judo giant.

YThis is a must for any fu fan or any Shaw Bro. collector.JV47842

Ugetsu (see film details)
Drama / Thriller

I'd never heard of this film but when I saw it "hailed by critics as one of the greatest films ever made... an undisputed masterpiece of Japanese cinema," well I thought I'd better check it out.

I certainly wasn't disappointed. There were moments of sheer directorial brilliance. The cast is top notch. The story and characters are interesting. The characters, two peasant couples in a war-ravaged land, seem to spend the length of the movie making the worst choices possible; usually out of various forms of greed. The tension isn't about "will they run into trouble" but "when" and "how much."

This is what I call a "film school" movie. It's something that could be played for budding directors who could dwell endlessly on the minutia of long takes, lighting, composition, etc. This isn't a bad thing, per se, but don't expect an action movie. Ugetsu is great at period drama and social commentary but not a single car explodes nor are any young martial-artists trained to avenge their sifu.

Yyep i totally agree lewis this is without doubt my favorite chow yun fat movie. kung fu kid

Crying Fist (see film details)
Action/Adventure / Drama

"Crying Fist" presents a really solid drama about two totally different fuckups (no other word applies) and their search for redemption through a boxing tournament. The two stories remain segregated until the very end. While you know that the two men will eventually meet in the ring, it is never clear who the winner will be. This creates a dramatic tension unlike most boxing movies where you are only presented the “hero’s” story. The acting is great throughout by the entire cast; meaning, in my opinion, that everyone kept up with "Oldboy’s" Choi Min-Sik. The fight cinematography is solid with many long takes of the action (which must have been brutal to film depending on how many takes the actors had to do). This is not a fight film or a martial art movie but if you are in the mood for drama, or just a good movie regardless of genre, you should check this one out.

Oldboy (see film details)
Thriller / Action/Adventure

Violent and beautiful. Darkly funny and depressing. Taboo smashing and brilliant.

Park Chan-wook is a daring and masterful director. Choi Min-Sik is a fantastic actor and, as in "Crying Fist", gives a great perfomance of an unlikely and generally unlikable hero. There were moments I didn't want to watch but mostly I couldn't look away.

YAmazing filmJV47842

Legend Of A Fighter (see film details)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Highly recommended. It was not what I expecting for a Fok Yun Gap (Huo Yuan Chia) movie. That's the trouble with only knowing history through movies. This isn't Bruce Lee or Jet Li's (or even Donnie Yen) Legend. This is Leung Kar Yan and Yuen Wo Ping's movie and it is excellent all around.

YTotally agree! Leung Kar Yan and the underated Yusuaki Kurate make this a great old school feature.Sgt. T

The New Legend Of Shaolin (see film details)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

I gave this movie five stars because the rating’s drop-down indicates "loved it!" I did not give “New Legend” five stars for being a cinema masterpiece. Caveats aside, I love this movie. After seeing it in a theater, I found the US version but promptly tossed it when I found a non-edited version with subs.

There were many really fantastic moments. Sure, some are stolen and others are totally whacked out, but that didn't ruin the fun for me. And yes, the acid/venom-space-car reminds me of the retarded "baby" alien in Alien IV in terms of boss-fight-lunacy; but what the hell, it was still fun. Finally, I generally hate kids in action movies (most movies, actually), but this time it worked great. Jet has great father-son chemistry with young Miu Tse (same talented kid from “My Father Is A Hero").

Don't buy this if you don't like:

  • Jet Li
  • Wire-Fu
  • Kung Fu Kids
  • Fantasy Films
  • Chicken Butt Jokes
  • Acid/Venom-Space-Cars
