The Painted Veil (product link)
Drama / Romance

Nice film. Wonderfully written and acted. Actors (and film’s producers) Edward Norton and Naomi Watts are always great, in my opinion. Liev Schreiber does another great job with a smaller roll. Anthony Wong, as a Nationalist Colonel, does a solid job as always (in very good English, no less). The scenery nearly steals the show though in this beautifully filmed almost-epic.

If you liked the trailer, congratulations! You’ve essentially seen the film. What isn't already revealed in the trailer is very predictable. Nice, but predictable.

I thought that the handling of the Western influence in Asia and the Chinese reaction to it was well done. All in all though, I am weary of movies where the civilized White people show up and save the uncivilized Non-White people. This happens in far too many films, a low-point for this plot-device occurs in the Kevin Bacon's "The Air Up There" where he travels to Africa to teach tall, black men to play basketball. Why? Well, to eventually save them from an evil mining corporation or some such nonsense. After saving the villagers, I’m sure Kevin’s character walked away with a broader worldview and a better sense of how awesome it is to be white.

Fatal Contact (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

I had low expectations for "Fatal Contact" (also know by the equally bland title, “Underground Fist”). I was very pleasantly surprised though. Yu Jing’s been in the business for 10 years or so but this really feels like is first starring role as an adult and I think he pulled it off well. The fights were great, of course. I thought that the wire-work was judiciously used to good effect. The camera work was great in and out of the fights (in fact, I could go on about just the camera and editing work). The humor worked for me too. I know that it didn’t for everyone, but oh well. Pop star Ronald Cheung’s character, Captian, seemed like a role written for Steven Chow, whose style I happen to like.

So, starting with humor, I understand why this film rubbed some folks the wrong way. The funniest bits for me were the self-referential jokes (like Jacky Wu Jing’s Jet Li and Wong Fei Hung references were great). I’m sure there are those viewers, however, who thought that that humor was distracting. I’m sure it didn’t help those who thought that the tone was a little confused. I’m sure there are those who didn’t like the “young love” story. Yes, the entire plot is lifted from other sources ("Danny the Dog", "Ong-Bak", a bit of "MacBeth", etc.). Yes, there are many clichés (like the fact that he’ll be asked to throw a fight). I’m not ruining anything, like other reviewers, because that plot point is predictable. And finally, yes, there are a couple of slower scenes that should have been removed.

Speaking of the story, generally regarded here are fairly thin, I thought that the meditation on the corruption of prostitution was really interesting. In the movie, every fighter is paid by the mob because of what they can do with their body. Wu Jing’s girl in the film, played by cutesy teen, Miki Yeung, becomes his pimp early in the film while another friend becomes an “actual” prostitute. All this plays into the broader theme (outside of ass-kicking) of money and the sacrifices and gambles people will make for it. This is really the central motivator played out the poor, rich, good guys, and villains in the film. In fact, I thought there was some interesting attention paid to this theme among the distinct strata of Triads.

I have a final thought on the theme of “underground” fighting in movies: I have always viewed this concept as a necessary evil (at best) in order to facilitate more ass-kicking. From "Enter the Dragon", "Bloodsport", "Danny the Dog" ("Unleashed"), "Ong-Bak", "Balls of Fury", etc., there is this idea that the Best Fighters in the World can be gathered for a fight to the death. Yeah, right. Why would a man train for 20 years so he can step in to the ring to fight to the Death? For money? Um, professional non-lethal fighters can win money without becoming professional murderers. If wealthy mobsters and socialites wanted to pay to see folks fight to the death, they’d be watching untrained (probably chronically mentally ill) homeless people. Fatal Bum Contact would make a bad film though. Hopefully writers will keep thinking of better reasons for the good guy to bust out the Fu without resorting to this lame plot device.

YWell stated review with a lot of interesting insights. You are right about this films unique meditations on prostitution but to be fair every job in existance is some variation of prostitution. Now I feel cheap.Bastard Ronin

Crying Freeman (product link)
Action/Adventure / Martial Arts

Oh I wanted to like this more... I am a Mark Dacascos fan, but converting Western comic books into film can be tricky. Translating manga into a Hollywood movie can be near impossible to do well. "Crying Freeman" very earnestly tries to bring the original manga to life but doesn't live up to its potential.

As other reviewers have said, get a copy of "Drive" or "Brotherhood of the Wolf" if you are a Mark Dacascos fan.

YI wanted to like this too being an admirer of the Manga series. The film fails, it has clever director Christopher Gans style. But Dacascos skills were not showcased well. The movie is an upset & has built a weird fan base that I will never understand.JV47842

Blind Fury (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Dutch actor, and total bad-ass, Rutger Hauer performs in this loose interpretation of the Zatoichi legend. I was 12 when I saw this and while it isn't quite as cool as it seemed back then, I am still giving 4 stars for old time's sake (or young time's sake as the case may be).

YWho does not love this awesome movie! Rutger Hauer as a blind swordsman is priceless. I saw this film was I was kid too- brings a lot of great memories.JV47842
YTotally agree. Saw it as a kid, loved it. Not quite as good now, but Rutger Hauer's mischievous charisma steals the show.Choco

Shogun Assassin Collection [5-Disc Set] (product link)
Action/Adventure / Martial Arts

AnimEigo has done an amazing job with Lone Wolf and Cub! This is the only series I would even consider purchasing dubbed instead of subbed. I bought AnimEigo's "Shogun Assassin" releases as they came out and spent more money than they are charging for the box-set. I don't mind at all though, I got to watch this versions earlier instead of waiting for the full set.

Shaolin Challenges Ninja (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

The first half is a martial/marital comedy nod to Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew". While William S. would generally wrap up misunderstandings with witty dialog and a happy ending, "Shaolin Challenges Ninja" ("Heroes Of The East") fills the second half of the movie with challenges and beat-downs. The only disappointing fight for me was Gordon's bout with the judo giant.

Ugetsu (product link)
Drama / Thriller

I'd never heard of this film but when I saw it "hailed by critics as one of the greatest films ever made... an undisputed masterpiece of Japanese cinema," well I thought I'd better check it out.

I certainly wasn't disappointed. There were moments of sheer directorial brilliance. The cast is top notch. The story and characters are interesting. The characters, two peasant couples in a war-ravaged land, seem to spend the length of the movie making the worst choices possible; usually out of various forms of greed. The tension isn't about "will they run into trouble" but "when" and "how much."

This is what I call a "film school" movie. It's something that could be played for budding directors who could dwell endlessly on the minutia of long takes, lighting, composition, etc. This isn't a bad thing, per se, but don't expect an action movie. Ugetsu is great at period drama and social commentary but not a single car explodes nor are any young martial-artists trained to avenge their sifu.

The Avenging Fist (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Caveat: Even though I own this, I didn’t make it all the way through so maybe, just maybe, it gets really awesome towards the end.

I had calibrated my expectations low enough for a movie "inspired" by a video game but, man, what a crapfest. I really wanted to like it, if only for Sammo and Yuen Biao, but I couldn't do it. The special effects were neither special nor effective. For example: in one scene a kid holds up his fist with thumb at his ear and his pinky extended to his mouth to answer the phone. 'Cause, you know, in the future your cell phone with be an Avenging Fist Phone with optional pinky boom-mic attachment. That’s not futuristic; that’s extremely lazy filmmaking. There were other effects that tried to simulate Amime and Video game fighting. These failed.

But what about the story, you ask? Don’t ask. If there was one, it sucked. Acting? Yep, there some acting happening. Martial Arts? Um, see “special effects” above. The one thing promised that was delivered is that most of the cast (Sammo and Yuen excluded) are both young and hip. Yep, very hip. And pretty too; all the boys and girls are pretty. If you want hip and pretty, I suggest downloading JPop videos from the web instead.

One final thought: You might be thinking that any film with “Avenging Fist Finger Phones” must fall into the category of so-bad-it's-good. Feel free to apply generous doses of alcohol and see if you can find some enjoyment in this mess. Personally, the director seemed to just suck all the joy out of the film (maybe in an attempt to make a kung-fu "Blade Runner"?) that I couldn’t enjoy it on any level.

Crying Fist (product link)
Action/Adventure / Drama

"Crying Fist" presents a really solid drama about two totally different fuckups (no other word applies) and their search for redemption through a boxing tournament. The two stories remain segregated until the very end. While you know that the two men will eventually meet in the ring, it is never clear who the winner will be. This creates a dramatic tension unlike most boxing movies where you are only presented the “hero’s” story. The acting is great throughout by the entire cast; meaning, in my opinion, that everyone kept up with "Oldboy’s" Choi Min-Sik. The fight cinematography is solid with many long takes of the action (which must have been brutal to film depending on how many takes the actors had to do). This is not a fight film or a martial art movie but if you are in the mood for drama, or just a good movie regardless of genre, you should check this one out.

Oldboy (product link)
Thriller / Action/Adventure

Violent and beautiful. Darkly funny and depressing. Taboo smashing and brilliant.

Park Chan-wook is a daring and masterful director. Choi Min-Sik is a fantastic actor and, as in "Crying Fist", gives a great perfomance of an unlikely and generally unlikable hero. There were moments I didn't want to watch but mostly I couldn't look away.

The Water Margin [1972] (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

The original story, “based on a true legend,” tells of 108 Mountain Men and most of them seem to be represented in the all-star cast. This is an exiting and complicated historical-drama and Chang Cheh does a great job of keeping the story and action moving. Highly recommended for genre fans!

Mad Monkey Kung Fu (product link)
Martial Arts / Action/Adventure

Great cast and great action! There were some scenes (one fight in particular) where Monkey style "won" with comedy-choreography rather than stunt-fighting. I guess I was hoping for something closer to “Drunken Master II” style of fights which are hard-hitting yet funny and ingenious. Minor quibbles aside, I highly recommend this one.

Deadful Melody (product link)
Martial Arts / Fantasy

This film is a blast (literally, for the poor victims of the Six-Fingered Lyre)! I bought this solely for Yuen Biao and Brigitte Lin. Yuen does his back-flippin' and Brigitte does her cross-dressin' and neither disappoint. True to the genre, this wuxia flick has nearly everything thrown into the blender: separated siblings, drama, battles, double-crosses, revenge, romance, comedy, wire-fu, ghosts & demons, and many Masters of the Martial Arts World. The entire moves along at a good clip while remaining interesting and clear. Overall this comes off as a high-energy fantasy film but also delivers on many other levels. At the core of the plot, for example, are questions about what to do with a weapon of mass destruction like the magic lyre. Do you hide it or use it for good and, like Tolkien’s One Ring, how do you avoid corruption from such power?

She Shoots Straight (product link)
Girls With Guns / Action/Adventure

This is really an excellent crime drama, comedy, Lifetime-TV special, action movie, and new-wave Hong Kong martial arts stunt classic rolled up in a weepy shoot-em-up Chick Flick. Now, sometimes in Chinese movies (especially in New Year’s Blockbusters) all these opposing components are mixed in jarring ways (to Western audiences anyway). She Shoots Straight, however, really puts these pieces together in a way that moves the story and characters forward.

As to the leading lady, Joyce Mina Godenzi, I had to make up a new word to describe her combination of solid acting, martial arts performance, and Miss-Hong-Kong looks: that word is badassidy. Mrs. Sammo Hung, or “Mina” as she is called in the film, rules every seen with sheer badassidy. Too bad she's made so few films....

Iron Angels (product link)
Action/Adventure / Crime

Cheese-ball 80's action-heroes-for-hire, two-Charlie’s-Angels-and-some-guy assist the apparently inept HK PD and fight the bad guys.

I've been on a girls-with-guns kick (no pun intended) lately and added Iron Angels to my collection based solely on two names: Moon Lee and Yukari Oshima. They do not disappoint. This is yet another movie where the "final confrontation" fight is worth waiting for. Just hum along with the 80’s tunes and giggle at the Gigantor-Brand cell phones until the big battle at the end!

Forbidden City Cop (product link)
Action/Adventure / Comedy

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

Because I don't speak any Chinese, I missed out on puns, cultural references, historical insights, and more. That being said, I never *felt* like I was missing out on anything. I was laughing out loud throughout the movie. This is my favorite Stephen Chow flick hands down. Stephen earned his co-director credit with Chow-classic physical comedy, pop-references, humor, and warmth which really makes this a stand-out movie.

You won’t get many fight scenes but this wuxia parody packs a hefty punch to your funny bone. Hmm, maybe that would sound cleverer in Cantonese. Probably not. Anyway, I highly recommend this everyone.

Robotrix [Joy Sales] (product link)
Science Fiction / Girls With Guns

Robocop meets Terminator meets Big Bouncing Boobs. You can, in fact, judge this one by its cover. It delivers everything you'd hope for (or fear) from the various cover shots.

If you like b-movies (or Double-D as the case may be), you should check out this 90's classic. There's a little too much rape for my tastes but it’s 100 times better than, say, "Holy Virgin versus the Evil Dead."
