 | | | | The Avenging Fist (see film details) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure
Caveat: Even though I own this, I didn’t make it all the way through so maybe, just maybe, it gets really awesome towards the end.
I had calibrated my expectations low enough for a movie "inspired" by a video game but, man, what a crapfest. I really wanted to like it, if only for Sammo and Yuen Biao, but I couldn't do it. The special effects were neither special nor effective. For example: in one scene a kid holds up his fist with thumb at his ear and his pinky extended to his mouth to answer the phone. 'Cause, you know, in the future your cell phone with be an Avenging Fist Phone with optional pinky boom-mic attachment. That’s not futuristic; that’s extremely lazy filmmaking. There were other effects that tried to simulate Amime and Video game fighting. These failed.
But what about the story, you ask? Don’t ask. If there was one, it sucked. Acting? Yep, there some acting happening. Martial Arts? Um, see “special effects” above. The one thing promised that was delivered is that most of the cast (Sammo and Yuen excluded) are both young and hip. Yep, very hip. And pretty too; all the boys and girls are pretty. If you want hip and pretty, I suggest downloading JPop videos from the web instead.
One final thought: You might be thinking that any film with “Avenging Fist Finger Phones” must fall into the category of so-bad-it's-good. Feel free to apply generous doses of alcohol and see if you can find some enjoyment in this mess. Personally, the director seemed to just suck all the joy out of the film (maybe in an attempt to make a kung-fu "Blade Runner"?) that I couldn’t enjoy it on any level. |

 | | | | Crying Fist (see film details) Action/Adventure / Drama
"Crying Fist" presents a really solid drama about two totally different fuckups (no other word applies) and their search for redemption through a boxing tournament. The two stories remain segregated until the very end. While you know that the two men will eventually meet in the ring, it is never clear who the winner will be. This creates a dramatic tension unlike most boxing movies where you are only presented the “hero’s” story. The acting is great throughout by the entire cast; meaning, in my opinion, that everyone kept up with "Oldboy’s" Choi Min-Sik. The fight cinematography is solid with many long takes of the action (which must have been brutal to film depending on how many takes the actors had to do). This is not a fight film or a martial art movie but if you are in the mood for drama, or just a good movie regardless of genre, you should check this one out. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | The Water Margin [1972] (see film details) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure
The original story, “based on a true legend,” tells of 108 Mountain Men and most of them seem to be represented in the all-star cast. This is an exiting and complicated historical-drama and Chang Cheh does a great job of keeping the story and action moving. Highly recommended for genre fans! | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | Mad Monkey Kung Fu (see film details) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure
Great cast and great action! There were some scenes (one fight in particular) where Monkey style "won" with comedy-choreography rather than stunt-fighting. I guess I was hoping for something closer to “Drunken Master II” style of fights which are hard-hitting yet funny and ingenious. Minor quibbles aside, I highly recommend this one. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | Deadful Melody (see film details) Martial Arts / Fantasy
This film is a blast (literally, for the poor victims of the Six-Fingered Lyre)! I bought this solely for Yuen Biao and Brigitte Lin. Yuen does his back-flippin' and Brigitte does her cross-dressin' and neither disappoint. True to the genre, this wuxia flick has nearly everything thrown into the blender: separated siblings, drama, battles, double-crosses, revenge, romance, comedy, wire-fu, ghosts & demons, and many Masters of the Martial Arts World. The entire moves along at a good clip while remaining interesting and clear. Overall this comes off as a high-energy fantasy film but also delivers on many other levels. At the core of the plot, for example, are questions about what to do with a weapon of mass destruction like the magic lyre. Do you hide it or use it for good and, like Tolkien’s One Ring, how do you avoid corruption from such power? | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | She Shoots Straight (see film details) Girls With Guns / Action/Adventure
This is really an excellent crime drama, comedy, Lifetime-TV special, action movie, and new-wave Hong Kong martial arts stunt classic rolled up in a weepy shoot-em-up Chick Flick. Now, sometimes in Chinese movies (especially in New Year’s Blockbusters) all these opposing components are mixed in jarring ways (to Western audiences anyway). She Shoots Straight, however, really puts these pieces together in a way that moves the story and characters forward.
As to the leading lady, Joyce Mina Godenzi, I had to make up a new word to describe her combination of solid acting, martial arts performance, and Miss-Hong-Kong looks: that word is badassidy. Mrs. Sammo Hung, or “Mina” as she is called in the film, rules every seen with sheer badassidy. Too bad she's made so few films.... | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | Forbidden City Cop (see film details) Action/Adventure / Comedy
 Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.
Because I don't speak any Chinese, I missed out on puns, cultural references, historical insights, and more. That being said, I never *felt* like I was missing out on anything. I was laughing out loud throughout the movie. This is my favorite Stephen Chow flick hands down. Stephen earned his co-director credit with Chow-classic physical comedy, pop-references, humor, and warmth which really makes this a stand-out movie.
You won’t get many fight scenes but this wuxia parody packs a hefty punch to your funny bone. Hmm, maybe that would sound cleverer in Cantonese. Probably not. Anyway, I highly recommend this everyone. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | Flash Point (see film details) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts
Based on early reviews, I had lowered expectations going into this sort-of-prequel to "SPL". Thankfully, I was pleasantly surprised. Donnie Yen, Louis Koo and Collin Chou (Seraph from 'The Matrix Reloaded') really put on a great show. The plot is thin but the characters are great and the action feels fresh and real. Speaking of action, I am not a huge fan of UFC or other cage fighting. Donnie likes UCF though and he’s done a great job of translating MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) into "film fighting". He’s been working long enough with the best directors and action coordinators to know what looks good on screen. He put a tremendous amount of effort into the action and, along with director, Wilson Yip, really drove the other actors and his hand-picked stunt team to give it everything they had. The effort shows, making this an easy recommendation to action fans. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | Martial Angels (see film details) Girls With Guns / Action/Adventure
Wow. Wow! I just watched "Martial Angels" and I am speechless. This is a bad movie. The script (if there was one), direction, stunts, cinematography, special effects, and editing were all bad. The video quality (referring to Tai Seng’s US Version 2) looked like an unrestored 1991 film instead of the 2001 film that it is. This shouldn't be surprising, but I was really blown away at how bad it was. Not all girls-with-guns flix are winners, but this makes "Naked Killer" look like "Hard Boiled".
I am so glad I bought this though (and that it was so cheap)! I can't wait to inflict this on my friends! Just think of the drinking games:
- Drink when you see insanely bad CG,
- Drink when you see thieves crack a safe in a 4-foot-deep pool without coming up for air for five minutes,
- Drink when the actresses look hot (strike that, you'll die of alcohol poisoning),
- Drink when people and vehicles are drastically under-cranked (in funny key-stone cops’ fast-motion),
- Drink when you feel bad about ogling the hot actresses when the masturbating rapist is on screen,
- Drink when actresses turn into skinny stunt men,
- Drink when dead henchmen come back to life to die in later scenes,
- Drink when English is used intermittently by anyone (Drink twice when the subs don’t match the spoken English),
- And finally, for the Designated Driver, drink when you see any female nudity.
