Princess Mononoke [HK SE 2-Disc Set] (product link) Animation / Fantasy Probably the best anime I've ever seen. Fantastic story, characters and animation, even the English dub is decent.
Duel To The Death (product link) Action/Adventure / Swordplay/Sword(s) An excellently made martial arts movie which depicts Chinese vs. Japanese swordfighting styes. Some pretty cool ninja action (including one strange but brief scene involving a topless female ninja), and a final fight that really makes you wince with empathy seeing the damage caused by the sword strikes. Highly recommended.
Dragon Inn [1992] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure A clever drama with an incredible cast that builds the tension very slowly before exploding into all-out insanity for the crazed, action-fueled finale. Donnie Yen is one nutty eunuch.
Death Trance (product link) Action/Adventure / Thriller Not quite as clever as "Versus", but this is a pretty fine vehicle for showing off Tak Sakaguchi's unique screen fighting style, along with the willingness of his stunt crew to take a punishing beating. Also features a suprisingly excellent climactic battle.
Deep Red: The Hatchet Murders [10-Movie Set] (product link) Horror / Mystery "Rosso Profundo" ("Deep Red") is Dario Argento's masterpiece. Forget "Suspiria", forget "Inferno" and "Tenebre" (though those are good flicks). This is one of the best and bloodiest giallos, full of wonderful visuals and twisted dreamscapes.
Dead Or Alive 2 (product link) Action/Adventure / Crime The furious madness of the first "Dead or Alive" takes a slight step back in this sequel. This flick is a lot more reserved and patient, but contains its share of Miike weirdness and bloody yakuza carnage.
Dead Or Alive: Final (product link) Crime / Action/Adventure Probably the weakest of the "Dead Or Alive" trilogy, this is still a pretty good futuristic action flick with some interesting ideas. Worth checking out if you've seen the first two.
Dead Or Alive (product link) Action/Adventure / Crime Psychotic and bizarre yakuza thriller from prolific director Takashi Miike. The opening 10 minutes and the final 10 minutes are sheer blasts of movie joy.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (product link) Drama / Martial Arts Modern wuxia pian awesomeness. Zhang Ziyi and Michelle Yeoh are both beautiful and deadly, and Chow Yun Fat is appropriately zen. Bonus points for the inclusion of wuxia queen Cheng Pei Pei as the Jade Fox.
Companeros (product link) Western / Comedy An action packed comedy romp throught the Mexican badlands. Franco Nero and Tomas Milian have some hilarious chemistry together. A great western.
The Killing (product link) Crime / Thriller Tightly plotted and fast paced, this incredible heist caper will leave you breathless. There is no such thing as "The Perfect Crime", but this is pretty close.
Danny The Dog [DVD Combo] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Probably Jet Li's best movie filmed outside of Asia. Bob Hoskins is always a pleasure, and this flick has some pretty brutal fights. A nice departure from the smooth wushu normally performed by Li.
Coffy (product link) Crime / Action/Adventure Sexy mama Pam Grier takes on the local drug lords single-handed in this grindhouse blaxploitation classic.
Class Of 1984 (product link) Thriller / Crime A great exploitation classic that pretty much trumps any other high school movie ever made. These kids are evil.
City Of The Living Dead (product link) Horror / Thriller Gory zombie masher from Lucio Fulci. Infamous for the Rain of Maggots and Head Drilling scenes. Make sure the version you see is fully uncut.
Nightmare City (product link) Horror / Thriller Running, jumping, knife-wielding zombies attack a town. Huh? Umberto Lenzi is a pretty amateurish director (poor effects, bad music, odd use of stock footage), but it's hard not to get swept up in the obvious enthusiasm of this flick.
Cannibal Ferox [Numbered LE Ultrabit Tin] (product link) Horror / Thriller A decent attempt to rip off (the superior) "Cannibal Holocaust". It has the violence but none of the social commentary or disturbing score.
Cannibal Holocaust (product link) Horror / Thriller Shockingly violent and controversial, this flick is everything you've heard that it is. Unrelentingly sadistic and cruel, filled with disturbing images and a haunting score. Truly terrifying.
