The Black Tavern (see film details) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Now this was an action-packed surprise! Fierce and fast swordplay, acrobatic fights, and the trademark early SB explicit blood letting. Shih Szu (as the Lady Hermit's student) wraps the film up with a show-stopping climax, where almost no one is left unbloodied.
There's enough style in this one film to furnish three Western productions, and that hack of a director, Tarantino, clearly thought highly enough of it to lift the most striking imagery for his cut-and-paste "Kill Bill Vol 1".
Shaolin Prince (see film details) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This was the first of the three films Tong Gai directed (the others being the excellent "Shaolin Intruders" and "Opium and the Kung Fu Master").
I found the at times quite juvenile humour (what's new with HK films?) really funny, especially the pogoing monks quite literally giving their superiors sass on a stick.
The fights come thick and fast, with plenty of wire assisted work throughout, and reminded me a little of some of the action in "Zu: Warriors of the Magic Mountain". This film contains hardly any fantasy elements, but if you're a fan of the crazy "Holy Flame of the Martial World" or "Zu", I can't recommend the slightly more down to Earth "Shaolin Prince" enough.
