| WHERE DOES THIS MOVIE RANK AMONG JACKIE CHAN FILMS? (918 views) | AUTHOR / DATE |
| From the cool old-school early 80s music, to the fun loving acting of Jackie Chan and Yuen Biao, to the epic fight between Jackie and Benny Urquidez, to the unusual (for a HK movie) scenery of Barcelona where amazingly all the locals speak Cantonese, I think this is one of Jackie's best movies. It may not have the best stunts. It may not have the best fights (although it certainly has ONE of his best), and it may not have the best production values/acting. But it has a unique charm that makes it incredibly entertaining. I'd rank this up with Jackie's top 5. Any takers? | YoMama 9/23/2008 11:39 AM |
| #2 | I agree. Along with Heart of the Dragon, Project A 2 and My Lucky Stars, it ranks as his best. Heck, almost anything JC did pre-1990 was top notch. I like the music in the UK/Japanese versions of the movies. Kind of a "beat it" knock off. | City On Fire 9/24/2008 2:46 AM |
| #3 | I am one of probably three people on the entire planet that didn't like Meals on Wheels. I own 26 of Jackies movies and I won't tell you where I would rate this because all the hate could kill a person. I will give you five that I feel are far superior to Wheels on Meals:
5) The Young Master
4) Snake and Crane Arts of Shaolin
3) Snake in the Eagles Shadow
2) Police Story
1) Drunken Master 2
Not only is Drunken Master 2 Jackies best, it has to rate up there with one of the all time greatest martial arts movies of all time. It has the perfect blend of action and comedy. | William Giordanella 10/15/2008 6:41 PM |
| #4 | Just curious why you didn't like MoW??? | YoMama 10/16/2008 3:20 AM |
| #5 | I'm also in the minority of people who think Wheels on Meals was meh. Maybe it had just been overhyped for me, but after watching what was supposed to be "OMG greatest fight in Jackie's CAREER!!!", all I could think was "That was it?"
The Jackie vs Benny fight is good, but way overrated. That being said, some of the stunt stuff with Jackie and Yuen Biao is pretty good, but the overall picture is pretty average.
I agree with all 5 of William's above picks as better than WoM. | TheDenizen 10/16/2008 12:41 PM |
| #6 | You guys can't be serious??? That fight scene was classic. Its the only scene I can think of where Jackie is bleeding and is all cut up. Most of his "fights" are mostly acrobatic-filled stunts. This was the real deal. Plus the music during the fight is freaking awesome. | YoMama 10/16/2008 1:02 PM |
| #7 | *shrugs* Jackie gets the crap kicked out of him in the final fight of The Young Master as well. | TheDenizen 10/16/2008 1:14 PM |
| #8 | Since I did some time over in Europe during my military days ( 3 years ), I can readily identify with the life style. This probably made Wheels On Meals more entertaining to me than some. Taking in the picture as a whole, I loved it. However Jackie has put together an incredible string of action/martial arts films!
That being said I would put Meals On Wheels in my top ten. The fight with Benny The Jet being one of the best as well as the rematch in Dragons Forever. William hit the nail on the head with Drunken Master 2 as Jackie's best and on that Immortal ever changing Top Ten Best martial arts movies of All-Time list! | Sgt. T 10/16/2008 10:35 PM |
| #9 | I'm not wild about all of the silliness and crap in WoM, but the action is awesome and makes the disc worth having.
TheDenizen--If you get the opportunity to watch the HKL uncut version with Bey Logan's audio commentary about the Jackie/Benny fight, you'll understand just how significant that fight scene was. Benny is padded up because Jackie was going full force with him. And Jackie was truly taking a lot of hits from Benny. Both actors were going full speed and not holding back. Also, when Benny did the spinning kick and the candles went out on the candelabra, that was real! That was not a screen trick! This movie also showed how good Keith Vitale was. Go back and watch it again.
Agree on DMII--in the top 5 of greatest martial art films ever! | WuxiaFan 10/17/2008 10:44 AM |
| #10 | YoMama, I will kindly answer your question. Like TheDenizen said, I felt this movie was just too overhyped. I agree that the scene with Bennie the Jet was brutal but the rest of the movie did nothing for me. In a nutshell, I didn't pay to see Jackie and Yuen sell hamburgers and skateboard. Sammo (my all time favorite) was totally underused and was given the role of a complete moron. I did feel that Yuen was quite good in this movie, but the question was "Where does Wheels on Meals" rank on Jackies list and I just can't put this in his top movies because of one fight scene, even as good as it was.
Sgt T, I also lived in Europe (Germany)for 3 years and I agree, I too could relate to the lifstyle. | William Giordanella 10/17/2008 8:08 PM |
| #11 | William, I also take into account the fight with Yuen Biao and keith vitale. Granted as a whole this film to me is a martial arts comedy with good action scenes between the comedic moments of our three stars. Does it always work? For me, because I have an off brand since of humor it does. Living in Europe like we agreed has made me a little more partial to this film than if I had not.
That being said should we have 2 Top Ten lists for Jackie Chan? One for his best martial arts/action films, and one for his comedies.
Jackie's incredible body of work | Sgt. T 10/18/2008 7:50 PM |
| #12 | Forgive that last incomplete sentence, I'm using the police computer at work and got distracted. What I meant to say was that out of Jackie's incredible body of work, can 2 Top Ten lists of serious and comedy be compiled? | Sgt. T 10/18/2008 7:54 PM |
| #13 | I'm not sure a Top Ten list of serious works would be very strong. Several of the early attempts to make him the new Bruce Lee are misfires that don't take his personality and strengths into account. Jackie Chan's acting chops were not quite sufficient for a really serious film until pretty far along in his career. "New Police Story" would have to go on a Serious Top Ten, for example, but it really doesn't stand up to his strongest comedies and serio-comedies.
I'd like to see the lists, but am pessimistic about the Serious. | Jeffrey Frawley 10/20/2008 4:28 AM |
| #14 | Only 5? That is a difficult list! Yes I would have WoM in the top five...at least at the moment. Sometimes films are rearranged in terms of favorites, for me anyway.
Okay five in no particular order~
Wheels on Meals
Drunken Master II
Project A
The Police Story Movies 1 - 4
(Hey this is difficult. And it's only cheating a little ;)
Asian Hawk Movies Operation Condor/Armour of God
I better quit now. There are at least ten Jackie movies that are wonderful and favorites however the ones I list are on my "MUST HAVE" movies. | Cinema! 2/17/2009 3:47 AM |
| #15 | After thinking about this I felt bad that I was "cheating".
The question was WoM in the top five. After much thought I can't say I would rank it in the top five. The top ten, yes.
My top 5
>drum roll......
1) Drunken Master II
2) Project A
3) Miracles
4) Police Story The Full Japanese Versions, Only
complete unedited goes to Japan
5) Armour Of God | Cinema! 2/21/2009 4:18 PM |
| #16 | Was Biao subbed for part of the acrobatic fight with Keith? It didn't look the same. Yuen Biao has a more fluid,a more graceful way of doing his wire - less wonders! | Cinema! 3/4/2009 5:55 PM |
| #17 | I just saw Dragon Forever for the first time. That one is also better than Wheels on Meals and has all three in it as well. | William Giordanella 3/30/2009 7:23 PM |
| #18 | It is one piece of fine entertainment, at least in my top ten of JC movies. Love it when the three brothers, Jackie, Sammo and Yuen are together on screen. | DarkHumour 5/29/2009 8:42 PM |
| #19 | For me WOM is 1 of the best as it was the first JC movie i watched. If you take it for what it is..a bright and breezy action comedy with a freakin awsome fight then you can't go wrong.I do prefer the early 80's dub also as it adds to the fun of the film!
On my list of JC's best in no order as its too damn hard to decide...
Project A
Armour of God
Police Story
Young Master
Dragons Forever
Dragonlord
