10 QUESTIONS WITH AKIHITO YAGI - YOUR FEEDBACK REQUESTED! (994 views)
AUTHOR / DATE
We've been invited to do an interview with Akihito Yagi, the star of this phenomenal film. I thought it might be nice to see if you guys had any particular questions that you'd like answered. If so, post 'em here ASAP and we'll try to work them into the interview!
Unfortunately, no all-region DVD player, so I have the R1 version on my 'wish list'. I know, I know. I'm gonna pick up a player from you guys once I get back to LA later this year.
So I've not seen this, but in these types of situations the thing that most fascinates me is the formal MA training. How old when they started, what styles, where, types of training. So many people don't realize just how much training these guys do. It also fascinates me to hear how smooth the transition was from combat arts to cinema arts. They really are two different animals.
Anyone trained in combat and self-defense knows that MA in movies is very counterintuitive and goes against all the good training (hands down for dramatic effect, but kicks and punches that leave one exposed).
I have not seen the movie in it's entirety however from what I did see this movie will help shape all martial art movies in the future. It seemed a bit hard to believe this was a perfect film, as they are so rare. From what I did see it may indeed be as good as people say, perhaps even more so. It has been compared to Ong Bak, in that there was no use of wires, surgical tubing, cgi's or kicking stuntmen several hundred feet. Watching some of the mesmerizing fight scenes I felt there was an aura of great respect, from those artists for what they were creating that extended to the crew. Although ever present and under tight control the intensity between the students is almost tangible. If I had the privilege of asking a question I would like to know if the deep respect was as real as it felt or was it *acting?* I am also curious about how Akihito Yagi prepared for his role mentally and emotionally.
This film has raised the bar for movies based in martial arts!
I'm looking forward to seeing this flick for sure, but sadly I don't really know much about who Akihito Yagi is...so I don't have anything to add to the questions. But I am curious to read the interview once it's published.
Unfortunately the All-Region player I was supposed to get still has not manifested, therefore like Garvinstomp I'm still waiting on the Region one version. Can't wait to see it, the only question I can think of is who influenced Akhito Yagi to become an actor. Was he influenced at all by Sonny Chiba or yasuaki Kurata? Hope these were not to late, law/security work keeps me terminally busy!
Sgt. T, as luck would have it, I know a really great place to pick up a region-free player at a great price... :)
We actually submitted our questions on Friday, but one of our questions did pertain to who some of his favorite MA actors are, so maybe your Q will get answered anyway. :)
I'm sure you true heads all going to flip over this film when it comes out on R1 DVD. It's just a terrific film, both from a martial arts perspective and a filmmaking perspective.
Don't tease, man. Don't tease. Nov. feels like an eternity the way people keep talking about this. Although, if I can finish this job and get back to LA I can get me one o' dem dere all-region thingamuhjiggers. I need to buy a new TV, too. Looks like I might as well just upgrade everything at the same time. Blu-Ray is tempting but I can't put my PS3 in the bedroom or I'll never get work done. So looks like I need to get one of those as well. Unless they make all-region blu-ray/DVD combos.
We only have some Blu-Ray/DVD players that do Regions 1&2 right now, which is perfect for Blu-Ray, but wouldn't cover you for Region-3/4 DVDs. Best bet for now is probably a R0 DVD player, and then just hold off a bit until there are some R0 BD players available too.
And believe me, I'm jonesing for November too. I can't wait to see this flick again. I don't want to over-hype it, but man, I just freakin' love it.
