 TONY JAA'S FUTURE. . . (254 views)AUTHOR /

I don't know about all of you, but when I first saw Ong-Bak, and subsequently 'TYG', I was completely blown away at Tony's talent. I really think he could be the heir apparent in the martial arts world (although he's got some stiff comp from Michael Chin, Shawn Lee, Ho Ro Bin, Kuan Jun Fei, Jung Woo and Im Joon-Il. But if you buy the hype, the future of asian martial arts rests on the shoulders of Wu Jing.)

But I still love Tony. So of course I was happy to see that Ong-Bak 2 was underway. But when Tony cracked under the pressure of starring and directing, left in the middle of filming and went and sat in a cave for a few months, returned with a list of silly demands, and ultimately ended up at a police station claiming to have been chased by men in a van wearing safari suits- I started to wonder.

It's great that he's finishing the film and they've brought in Thai directing royalty Panna Rittikrai to helm.

But has Tony gone over the edge? Will he settle in and make some more great MA flix? Will Hollywood import him, co-opt him, and then marginalize him, all but reducing his career to a bad joke? I know he's expressed interest in working here (his message scrawled on the wall to Spielberg in OB was a nice touch). What would be the smart move for him?

Just curious to hear your opinions?

#2 I was deeply concerned when I read about all that drama queen B.S. during filming of OB2. That's the kind of thing that could make him a much less appealing star for future movies.

I guess the possible upside is that he may continue to work in Thailand longer if American studios don't want to touch him. Maybe it's a blessing in disguise? Time will tell...

#3 I think its kind of like when you give an 18 year old an NBA contract. They go kind of nuts with the new found wealth and responsibility. He needs a good support group around him and he'll be ok. If he doesn't have this he might not be able to handle the pressure. He probably shouldn't have been directing this movie. Just acting in it would have been enough.YoMama

#4 It's always difficult to know how much of what we hear and read is reliable however I think it's safe to say he has had serious issues. "Star Worship" can be a very heady thing and perhaps it was just too much at once. Panna really should be there. Why Tony did not include him at least as a co - director I don't understand. He has talent like no one else! Am amazing style absolutely thrilling to watch. YoMama I think you are right, all that wealth and the things required to keep that money coming in may have just been overwhelming. There are very few people who can star and direct their own movies, and come out with a great production.I really don't know if he should come to the US or not. The US will never have the same energy as that can also be good or bad. If he does shoot here there will be a lot of paperwork and people telling him he can't do certain things. He would no longer be able to do his fighting and stunts.I hope he does whatever makes him happy.Cinema!

#5 You got love the guy just because he's a crowd pleaser and he is willing to risk his neck. That's old school. I can also appreciate the fact that he is under a great deal of pressure and it's probably difficult to function properly when you are the talent that others are trying to pimp out. My biggest concern at this point is: will he be able to continue making films that uphold the quality and excitement of his first two films? Many of the other big Asian action stars have been known to hold a little back and save certain amazing techniques so they can slowly leak them out in movies throughout their career. Not Tony though. He jam packs each of his films with almost his entire arsenal. I love that he does that but is that going to facilitate him in burning out before he has really enjoyed his reign? Although that does force him and his choreographers to stay creative it also adds even more pressure to his situation. I got faith anyways. He's delivered so far...Bastard Ronin
