#2 Nice packaging and 14 bucks a movie isn't bad for the a general release and it's especially compelling knowing they are the Criterion Collection editions.Lewis

 #3 I hate Akira Kurosawa movies but I'm glad you're .. .. .. er .. .. horny? NO, happy. :) slave 2 (the ressurection)

#4 How can you hate Kurosawa? I'd be all over this if I didn't already own like half of these films...it's a pretty impressive set.TheDenizen

 #5 What Denizen said.Choco

#6 (insert insane laughter here) I was kidding.

I actually never seen an Akira Kurosawa film except one in which I can't recall the title. It about a king of some sorts who finds a replicant of himself and trains him to act like him in order to keep his kingdom powerful. It was slow and painfully boring.

I'm not into epics so considering Akira is an epic film director, I was being hypothetical. And a douche. :)

#7 That's Kagemusha. A flick I enjoy, but it is pretty slow moving in parts. If you're interested in something a little shorter to try out, both Yojimbo and Rashomon are only about 90 minutes each. Yojimbo has lots of action and is pretty funny in parts, too. :PTheDenizen

#8 Yojimbo was actually one of the films I always wanted to watch. 7 Samurai is another, but Criterion is pricy That's why I don't buy them.slave 2 (the ressurection)

#9 Also, "The Hidden Fortress" which influenced "Star Wars". It's pretty damn hard not to be entertained by "Seven Samurai" or "Red Beard," too. "Kagemusha" is one of the worst Kurosawa films to start with.

#10 slave how can you say you hate Kurosawa movies? And you say you have only seen one? Isn't that a bit narrow minded? I would place my order in a second but for some reason they make me pay so it will have to wait : )

Do try another one of his films sometime. I really think there are ones you might actually enjoy. Yojimbo would be a good place to start.

#11 Cinema!, I was kidding as I stated in #6. If I'm not aware of Akira then how can I hate him. This film Kagemusha did not appeal to me one bit and yes when his films on DVD CAN be affordable I will try some. Yojimbo will more an likely be my first but for now, I'm basking and indulging in my stupid happy films like Seventh Curse and Mighty Peking Man. :) slave 2 (the ressurection)

#12 "The Quiet Duel," "Dersu Uzala," "Ran," "Dreams" and "Rhapsody in August" are not included, but they are all available separately from HKFlix. "The Quiet Duel" is notable as Toshiro Mifune's first performance for Akira Kurosawa. "Dersu Uzala" is a curiousity - made in the Soviet Union in the Russian language with a Soviet cast and financing after the box office failure of Dodes'ka-Den and Kurosawa's loss of the Japanese studio system's conficence. "Ran" is Kurosawa's last epic, and a long-delayed project. I find it stunningly beautiful but cold - the work of a man who had lost his faith in mankind. "Dreams" is perhaps a reaction to that late, cold masterpiece: dramatizations of Kurosawa's own dreams - not all hopeful, but with the possibility that all may not be lost. I don't know what to make of "Rhapsody in August" - It contains hope and some good performances, but seems to have been an experiment which did not completely succeed.Jeffrey Frawley

#13 And "Runaway Train", starring Eric Roberts and Jon Voight is also sadly missing... :) (Based on a Kurosawa screenplay.)

How hilarious would that be to have included "Runaway Train" in this set?

#14 I can tolerate the absence of films written but not directed by Kurosawa. The collection would start getting pretty big if it included "Fistful of Dollars," "Runaway Train," "Last Man Standing" and "After the Rain," among others. "Ran" is the most striking absence: I suppose rights issues got in the way of including it.Jeffrey Frawley

#15 "Those Who Make Tomorrow" (1946) was previously listed as a film co-directed by Akira Kurosawa, but he removed it from his credits. The other directors were Hideo Sekigawa and Kajiro Yamamoto, and the writers were Yusaku Yamagata and Kajiro Yamamoto. I suspect it should best be considered a Yusaku Yamamoto film. It is about factory workers' devotion to their jobs, rather than Kurosawa's traditional existential dread.Jeffrey Frawley

#16 Okay - lots of typos in that one. I was confusing Kajiro Yamamoto and Yusaku Yamagata. It's probably a Kajiro Yamamoto film, but what do I know?Jeffrey Frawley

#17 I was just being a smartass. No one box set should ever include a Toshiro Mifune film and an Eric Roberts film. EVER.Choco

#18 "Runaway Train" may be the last worthy film from Eric Roberts - and the last one in which Jon Voight appeared tough. Although neither of them gave a disappointing performance, I would have liked to see what Kurosawa and a Japanese cast could have done with it. Toshiro Mifune could have played Manny, and Raizo Ichikawa could have played Buck, and Tomisaburo Wakayama could have played Associate Warden Ranken. No actress comes to mind to play Sara.Jeffrey Frawley

#19 Yeah, "Runaway Train" is kind of a guilty pleasure of mine. For me, the atmosphere and music are the stars. Eric Roberts and Jon Voight both annoy the crap out of me, especially Eric Roberts--jeez, this might be his most annoying role ever. But those wide shots of the unmanned train barreling through snow-covered landscapes with that classic synth music...aah, I love it.Choco

#20 If you think Eric Roberts was at his most annoying in "Runaway Train," you probably haven't seen him in "TNT," in which he is out-acted (in English) by the French-speaking kick boxer Olivier Gruner (whose acting ability is one step behind Gary Daniels, two behind Steven Seagal, and nearly three behind Jean-Claude Van Damme, if you need to get your bearings).Jeffrey Frawley
