So glad to see this flick finally available on DVD! I've been anxiously awaiting this release, I've already placed my order :)

I've had a hard time finding any reveiws of this movie online (in English). Anyone else know of any/have links?

#3 Been swamped with work and haven't gotten around to writing a review as I hoped I would have...but I did watch the film this weekend and really enjoyed it. What was particularly surprising to me was that it's very un-sensational. You kind of expect that for a remake/reboot/etc. they try to crank everything up a bit. But here it was all about this slow and deliberate pacing, just a steady boil up to the end. The fights are cool, but they're about nuance more than they are about spectacle, and about conservation of movement, and focus. The filmmakers never lose sight of the fact that the characters are the focus of the film, not the action. Anyway, I'll be curious to discuss this with you guys once you've seen it. Just be sure when you first press "play" that you're ready to tune in and meet the film on its own beautiful terms, don't expect it to come grab you and demand your attention with fireworks. :)Choco

#4 That sounds like good news. A campy, over the top actioner would be fun, too, but I'm glad they've gone with a more classical, deliberate pace for this flick. I like the idea of bringing the Zatoichi legend back to it's jidai geki roots. Can't wait.TheDenizen

#5 I was hoping Haruka Ayase would get naked but that never happened! Just kidding.... well not really :-)YoMama

#6 Nothing will ever top Reiko Ike's naked swordfight in Sex & Fury... :P I'm kinda glad to hear the producers of Ichi didn't try anything similar :)TheDenizen

#7 Naked women are great and all, but naked people fighting is just impossible to take seriously. Sorry, but naked people aren't scary. It's just a fact of nature. :)Choco

#8 The thought occurs that there WAS a naked swordfight in one of the original Zatoichi flicks. Katsu fights about 20 guys in a bathhouse in "Zatoichi and the Festival of Fire" and all of them are nude as I recall. Of course, clever editing and conveniently placed props prevented anything X-Rated from being shown, and the fight was largely played for laughs (despite Ichi slaughtering everyone :P).

Regardless, naked Shintaro Katsu with a cane sword = SCARY.

:D

#10 I guess this "reimagining" of the Zatoichi character could be any worse than the abysmally horrible Takeshi Kitano movie.MS10197

#11 HKFlix should sell grinding wheels to go with your Axe! :) I loved the 2003 "Zatoichi", but I know it divided people... :)Choco
6/20/2009 8:04 PM
#12 Yes, it did divide people. Some people thought Kitano's turn as Zatoichi was ONE of the worst performances they had other seen while others thought it was THE worst acting performance they had ever seen.MS10197

#13 So, basically, you're saying you didn't think the movie was that good? :) Choco
6/22/2009 11:51 PM
#14 Yes, we all remember the Anti-Kitano rant you had last year, MS10197 :) Have you actually seen this version, or are you just assuming that it will be terrible?TheDenizen
6/23/2009 10:29 AM
#15 I don't make the assumption it is horrible. I make the assumption that it must be better than Kitano's version, because that movie was horrible. However, I don't really have high expectations for Zatoichi "remakes", because comparisons to Shintaro Katsu are inevitable, and no one can measure up.

And in my second statement above, the second sentence should read:

Some people thought Kitano's turn as Zatoichi was ONE of the worst performances they had EVER seen while others thought it was THE worst acting performance they had ever seen.

I accidentally used the word other instead of ever.

And in my first reply above, it should read:

I guess this "reimagining" of the Zatoichi character couldN'T be any worse than the abysmally horrible Takeshi Kitano movie.

I used the word could instead of couldn't.

I wish there was an way to make corrections to replies that have been submitted.

#16 Worry not, MS, I think the intent of your comments came through loud and clear regardless of a couple typos. :)Choco
