WHO IS MORE BETTER, DONNIE YEN OR JET LI IN THE 90'S? (377 views)AUTHOR /
DATE
Well i've watched a lot of movies and for me i can't rack my brain off of this movie, Iron Monkey versus Jet Li's movie, Last Hero In China. Both actors are great in what they do and this era and i believe that the two of them have influenced US and how they percieve Martial Arts at the same time. I wish they would do another movie a far from Hero and more like there helping one another unlike the pairing of Jackie Chan and Jet Li's last latest movie. Care to discuss what you think, I welcome all thoughts, opinions, and answers...djj2020

#2 Probably Jet Li, just based on his slightly better acting ability. I suppose it depends on the criteria upon which you wish to rate them. One criteria could be their impact on movies. That's Jet Li hands down. He was able to penetrate into Hollywood at a fairly significant level. I think Jet Li's physical ability in the 90s topped Donnie Yen. And while they both used wires way too much, Jet had a couple excellent movies that used them sparingly. In terms of box office success, Jet wins again. Just MHO.YoMama

#3 I'm with YoMama to a point. Jet Li is a much better actor and high the higher overall box office success. As for the physical ability thing, I completely disagree with him there. Donnie Yen's physical abilities are nothing short of phenomenal. Jet Li is faster- I do give him that but Donnie's vast range of skills extend far beyond the chinese styles than that of many of those Hong Kong fu all-stars. While it is true that Jet knows Karate and some boxing he is mainly a fu man. Although he probably knows more styles of Chinese boxing than anyone doing films now so he diserves props for that. Donnie has an extensive knowledge of Chinese boxing, Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Jujitsu, boxing and true Jeet Kune Do. Let's also not forget about his power. I've been saying for quite a while that Donnie Yen is the closest thing we have in this generation to Bruce Lee. Sure Jet was the cash cow but there was always something really great about Donnie. He deserves far more recognition.Bastard Ronin

#4 Jet in the 90's, Donnie in the 00's.

Jet peaked physically earlier than Donnie (he IS older), and Jet is much more recognizable worldwide as a Wushu/action superstar. However, The last 8 years (other than Fearless) have been pretty weak ones for Jet IMO. He's slowing down, and doing less of the types of movies I like to see. At the same time, Donnie is hitting his physical peak, and seems to be really coming into his own as an action director/choroegrapher with his last few features.

Put it like this: I'm looking forward to Donnie's next pic more than Jet's.

#6 Jet Li, without a doubt. I can't stand Donnie Yen. He is such a narcissist and egomaniac, you half-expect him to stop in the middle of his fights and pose in front of a mirror. Li is also a much better actor and is more charismatic and likable than Yen, which is admittedly not saying very much. And while none of Li's movies would be considered for "Ten Best Films of the Year" lists, they are certainly much better than Yen's efforts.

I have also heard Yen is an absolute pain in the ass to work with which might explain why, despite his fluency in English, he has not landed a starring role in a Hollywood flim.

To sum it up, anything Yen can do Li can do better.

#9 Fair enough. How about giving the guy credit for being one of the hardest working action choreographers in the business or how about the fact that he has not relied on lines for half of his career like Jet has. I can fully respect the fact that you may not like his personality but are you disregarding his skill because of such? I think that your distaste for Donnie is causing you to ignore all of his contributions to kung fu movie industry.Bastard Ronin

#10 I like many more of Jet Li's films than Donnie Yen's, but it seems to me that Donnie Yen's martial arts abilities are very much more practically-based. Jet Li knows sport/performance Wushu better than almost anyone in action cinema, but Donnie Yen knows how to fight - sometimes less beautifully, but with real impact. That's the way it seems to me....He's not really that much younger, but he has devoted himself to a more syncretic real world style.Jeffrey Frawley

#11 Personally I like both Jet Li and Donnie Yen. They both have their strenghs and weaknesses as fighters and performers. They both made a big splash in the nineties with their respective signature movies, thus cementing both as names of repute for those of us who watch martial arts films. The Once Upon A Time In China films, Tai Chi Master, and Fist Of Legend made Jet more popular earlier in his career. For Donnie, Iron Monkey, Tiger Cage2, and the lesser known Heroes Among Heroes were popular for him

Donnie of course went on to make SPL,Dragon Tiger Gate, and Flashpoint which are now his trademark films in which he was also a big part of the fight choreography. Jet of course did Fearless which ended his run of traditional martial arts films thus pushing him more to the action film side where Donnie is already. To me counting the ninties and millinieum years both Donnie and Jet have had their high and low points spanning their careers! They're both influential!
