Yes, it is that good.

This is definitely Donnie Yen's best film to date, and it was a really great watch. It's that most rare breed of HK film, with top-quality production values, a great score, wonderful acting, a coherent and powerful story, and incredible martial arts action. Even the sound design was impressive.

Donnie Yen's action performance is excellent, as you'd expect. But I was particularly impressed by his acting here too. I find him much better suited to these period films than the modern-day ones. Just personal preference I guess, but the bottom line is that this film gave him the perfect backdrop for him to shine, and he nailed it.

I'm sure we'll all be discussing this film in much more detail in the coming days and weeks, but for now I just had to make this quick post.

#7 I completely agree and I can't wait for the rest of the trilogy!

I have a technical question. (Feel free to move it to another thread if needed). I couldn't manage to get a clean picture out my Ip Man [Malaysia Version] DVD regardless of manipulations I made to my Oppo 971 or my widescreen TV. Anyway, my question is about the Blu-ray version of Ip Man. Has anyone seen/heard it that could let know how it looks before I spend 35 bucks on it? Also, are the extra’s subtitled? Thanks in advance!

#8 I have the blu-ray version and do have to say the quality is great...as good as the best of the Asian Blu-rays i have seen and own. The extra features are all subtitled and are of a surprisingly good quality. Most asian dvds usually have the same 5 minute talking head behind the scene featurette and the premier footage, but this blu-ray has lots of great interviews by the entire cast along with other featurettes covering various topics of the film. I slept over an hour watching them all.RP17750

#10 i agree this is dionnie yen's best movie to date and it will be hard for him to top this performance acting and martial arts technique and action wise just as good if not better than fearless and fist of legend in my opinion the three best martial arts movies in the past 25 years since 36th chamber of shaolin and heroes of the east.AR17235

#11 Hey William, I totally agree with you and everyone else. This is a great movie! So far I don't think Donnie Yen can top himself after such a great portrayal of Yip Man. Definitely his best acting performance to date!Sgt. T
